If you mainly want to play Grand Theft Auto VI, choose Standard. Ultimate costs more for a collection of in-game items and activities; it is not required to get the game. If you are unsure whether those extras matter to you, Rockstar says you can buy the Ultimate Edition Upgrade after redeeming Standard, so you can decide later.
What is the difference between GTA 6 Standard and Ultimate?
Rockstar lists two editions. Standard includes Grand Theft Auto VI. Ultimate includes the game plus the Ultimate Edition Upgrade, a set of in-game bonuses Rockstar describes as items threaded through Jason and Lucia’s story.
Standard Edition
Standard is the straightforward choice if you want the game and do not have a particular reason to pay for the extra content. It is available digitally or as a physical code-in-box version.
Ultimate Edition
The Ultimate Edition Upgrade includes a ’95 Grotti Cheetah; Hawk & Little Morgan Revolvers and personalized weapon variants; Vice City styles; Jason’s safehouse vehicles; the Ganado Retro Build; Rideout Customs Mod Shop; Sara’s Unisex Salon; Shitzu Squalo; Stock 305 Clothing Store; ’67 Vapid Dominator Buggy and Garage; Electric Fang Tattoo Parlor; One-Eyed Willie’s Mod Shop; Goodtime Gear; PTT Youngin$ Compound; and Classic Car Collection. Rockstar’s official edition page calls Ultimate “An exclusive collection of items threaded across all aspects of Jason and Lucia’s story.” It says new items are uncovered behind each chapter. These are listed as in-game items, places, and activities. Rockstar’s edition information does not establish a gameplay advantage, a faster completion time, or an objective value for the extras. Whether they are worth paying for comes down to whether you want them.
Is GTA 6 Ultimate worth the extra cost?
On the US Xbox storefront as accessed October 3, 2026, Standard is listed at $79.99 and Ultimate at $99.99, a $20 difference. The Ultimate Edition Upgrade is also listed at $20. Those are US Xbox storefront prices, not guaranteed prices elsewhere; check the official PlayStation or Xbox listing for your country before buying.

At those listed US prices, buying Standard and upgrading later costs the same as buying Ultimate upfront. Rockstar Support says Standard owners can purchase the upgrade separately after redeeming the Standard code, including buyers of the physical code-in-box version. Rockstar Support: Grand Theft Auto VI Platforms, Editions, and Versions explains the edition and upgrade options. The price and availability should still be checked on your local storefront.
Choose Standard if…
- You want the base game and do not specifically want the Ultimate bonuses.
- You would rather keep the extra money unless the in-game collection appeals to you.
- You are undecided and prefer to assess the offer later, where the separate upgrade is available.
Choose Ultimate upfront if…
- You already know that the listed vehicles, weapon variants, styles, locations, and activities are worth the premium to you.
- You want the Ultimate content included immediately rather than making a later upgrade decision.
Can you upgrade from Standard to Ultimate later?
Rockstar says you can buy the Ultimate Edition Upgrade after redeeming Standard. That includes a Standard physical code-in-box purchase, although the upgrade itself must be bought through PlayStation or Microsoft. On the US Xbox storefront accessed October 3, 2026, the upgrade is listed at $20.00; do not assume the same price or upgrade route applies in every region or store.

If you are uncertain, compare the local prices and confirm the upgrade is offered for your platform before relying on the staged-buying option. The US Xbox price math makes Standard-first a way to postpone the choice without paying more overall at the listed prices, but local prices may differ.
Do both editions get the preorder bonuses?
Rockstar Support says digital pre-orders and purchases of either edition before November 20, 2026 include the Vintage Vice City Pack and one month of GTA+. The pack includes a ’55 Vapid Stanier Sedan and Garage, outfits and hairstyles, and an exclusive weapon pattern. These are shared preorder benefits, not a reason on their own to pay for Ultimate. Physical pre-orders include a code for the game and Vintage Vice City Pack, but Rockstar’s physical-version description does not include the digital one-month GTA+ offer. Check the exact terms for the retailer and platform you intend to use. The US Xbox listing, accessed October 3, 2026, gives a purchase cutoff of November 19, 2026 at 23:59:59 and says the GTA+ month must be redeemed within 180 days of placing the preorder. These terms are specific to that listing and may not apply to other storefronts.

No. Rockstar says the physical box contains a download code for the digital game, not a disc. Standard is the physical edition available as code-in-box; Rockstar says physical Ultimate is not available. A physical Standard buyer can still buy the Ultimate Edition Upgrade through PlayStation or Microsoft after redeeming the code.

Rockstar advises buying from a retailer in the country associated with your platform account to avoid activation problems. PlayStation code regions are restricted; Rockstar says Xbox codes are not region-locked. Confirm the retailer’s terms and account compatibility before purchasing. Which platforms and release date are listed?
Rockstar lists preorders for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. The US Xbox listing, accessed October 3, 2026, gives November 19, 2026 as the release date. Check your own platform’s official listing for the current date, edition availability, and local terms.
