No GTA Online career is established as the best overall. Rockstar’s official material describes four different business loops, and the right one depends on which activities you want to repeat. If you want one starting point, Nightclub Owner suits players who want a business that keeps earning while they do other things. That is a play-style recommendation, though, not evidence that it pays the most.
What Career Builder offers
Career Builder gives new players, or anyone starting over, a choice of four illicit businesses: Biker, Executive, Nightclub Owner, and Gunrunner. Rockstar’s 2022 announcement said new players on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S could pick one of these businesses and use a GTA$ windfall toward a property, a vehicle, and weapons. The announcement describes the windfall as “sizable” but does not put a figure on it.

The choice is a starting point rather than a permanent identity. Rockstar’s July 2022 Criminal Enterprises announcement later described expansions for all four Criminal Careers, so a player who starts with one business can still take part in the others’ activities.
How the four careers differ
Each career centres on a different kind of work. The table below uses Rockstar’s descriptions from its 2021 and 2022 official material. Later updates may have changed individual businesses, so treat the details as a map of each loop rather than a current rulebook.

Choosing by play style
Pick the career whose recurring work you would be happy to do repeatedly. The matches below follow the official descriptions.
- Nightclub Owner if management and income that accrues while you do other activities matter most.
- Executive if you want to run an Organization and prefer cargo work and delivery missions.
- Gunrunner if Bunker production, resupply, and research appeal more than club or cargo management.
- Biker if you want the Motorcycle Club theme with several MC businesses and clubhouse activities.
Why Nightclub Owner is the flexible pick
Rockstar’s GTA Online Starter Tips (2021) describes the Nightclub this way: “This Business is a great way to earn GTA$ passively, and as your business earns profit, you can take on other illicit moneymaking endeavors in the meantime.” That sentence makes the case for Nightclub Owner as the most flexible starting point, because the business keeps running while you run missions or other businesses. It does not say the Nightclub beats the other careers on income, and it should not be read that way.

What the earnings evidence can and cannot show
Rockstar’s official material does not provide a matched comparison of hourly earnings across the four paths. Such a comparison would need to control for business ownership, upgrades, player count, and event bonuses, and the official sources do not do that. No named statistic compares the careers either. Any claim that one career is the “best money” option therefore goes beyond what Rockstar has published.
Payouts can also change. In its 2022 “Upcoming Improvements to the GTA Online Experience” post, Rockstar said it was increasing payouts across a range of activities to give players more choice. That shows the balance moves over time; it does not show which career pays best today.

If you want to compare earnings yourself, check these before you commit:
- Rockstar’s most recent GTA Online update notes, for any payout changes affecting business sales or missions.
- Whether any double-payout or bonus event is running, since bonuses distort short-term comparisons.
- Your own business upgrades and the number of players in your session, so you compare like with like.
Playing privately and alone
Rockstar’s July 2022 Criminal Enterprises announcement, “The Criminal Enterprises, Coming July 26 to GTA Online”, said: “all Business activities — including Sell Missions — will now be available to play in private (Invite Only, Crew, and Friends) sessions.” That made business play, including selling, available outside public lobbies at the time of the update. The announcement does not say every later rule change kept that arrangement, so confirm the current session options in the game before relying on it. Invite Only sessions are closed to players you do not invite, which is the closest the 2022 wording comes to a private option for a player who wants to avoid public lobbies.

Getting into GTA Online
GTA Online is included with Grand Theft Auto V, and Rockstar announced a standalone release for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S for March 15, 2022. Check the current store listing for the platform and edition you want before you buy, since the game has been updated many times since then.
