Which Halo game is the best starting point?
For most newcomers, Halo: Campaign Evolved is the clearest story-first entry: it remakes the campaign of Halo: Combat Evolved, the game that began the franchise, while updating its presentation. Xbox Wire described it as a potential ideal entry point for new players. The game launched globally on July 28, 2026; Xbox Wire gives July 29 as the date for Japan and select Asia-Pacific markets. If you would rather see how the series unfolded at release, start with Halo: Combat Evolved in Halo: The Master Chief Collection (MCC). Then play Halo 2, Halo 3, Halo 3: ODST, Halo: Reach, and Halo 4, followed by Halo 5 and Halo Infinite. This is a release-history order, not strict fictional chronology: Reach is a prequel set before the first game, but playing it after the original trilogy preserves the order in which players encountered the series. What makes Campaign Evolved different?
Halo: Campaign Evolved is a full remake of the original campaign, rather than a new numbered chapter. Xbox Wire says it updates visuals, animation, music, voice performances, and controls. It retains the original ten-mission campaign and adds Operation: METEORITE, a three-mission story arc set before it.

The remake supports two-player local split-screen on console and online co-op for up to four players across Xbox, PC, and PlayStation 5, according to Xbox Wire. The launch announcement lists Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC, Steam, and PlayStation 5, and says it was available at launch with Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass. Check the current store listing in your region for availability and access terms.
What do you get with The Master Chief Collection?
MCC brings together the campaigns for Halo: Combat Evolved, Halo 2, Halo 3, Halo 3: ODST, Halo 4, and Halo: Reach. Halo Support lists availability on Xbox One, Microsoft Store for PC, and Steam for PC. It also notes that MCC is included with some, but not all, Game Pass plans; check the current plan details before subscribing. The PC collection is as complete as the console collection. Although Reach takes place before Combat Evolved, release order is a strong first-playthrough choice because it lets the original game introduce its world before the prequel adds earlier context. The games and the television series also do not share one continuity: Xbox Wire describes the show’s “Silver timeline” as separate from core game canon.

You can, but it is a later-era standalone campaign rather than the best route for following the story from its beginning. Halo Support lists Halo Infinite for Microsoft Windows and Xbox One and Series consoles. Its multiplayer and Academy are free to play without Game Pass; the campaign is a separate listing, Halo Infinite (Campaign), and must be purchased or accessed through some Game Pass memberships. Halo Support says physical discs grant access to the full game, including the campaign. Check the exact edition and platform listing before buying. - Want the original story in a modern rebuild? Start with Halo: Campaign Evolved.
- Want the games as players originally encountered them? Start with Halo: Combat Evolved in MCC and follow release order.
