Slytherin is the leading choice in the clearest game-specific figures available: GamePro reported that developer Avalanche Software supplied anniversary figures placing Slytherin at 30%, just ahead of Gryffindor at 29%. The figures are not a published census with a disclosed sample or method, so they support a best-evidenced answer—not a claim that a representative survey of every player found the same result.
Which Hogwarts Legacy house is most popular?
GamePro’s first-anniversary report attributed these house-choice figures to an email from developer Avalanche Software:
| House | Reported share |
|---|---|
| Slytherin | 30% |
| Gryffindor | 29% |
| Hufflepuff | 24% |
| Ravenclaw | 17% |
On that account, Slytherin leads by only one percentage point. GamePro’s report does not provide the underlying sample size or explain how the figures were collected, and the original developer dataset was not located. Treat these as developer-reported statistics relayed by GamePro, rather than an independently auditable, current count of all players. GamePro’s anniversary report
Why do polls give different answers?
Opt-in polls do not necessarily represent the full player base. Their results depend on who chooses to vote, when the poll ran, and what it asked. The available community polls do not agree on a single leader:

| Poll | Top result | What it measured |
|---|---|---|
| GameFAQs, before release | Slytherin: 36.45% (292 of 801 votes) | Voters’ intended first-playthrough house |
| GRYOnline reader poll snapshot | Slytherin: 36.1% | Approximately 500 reader votes, as reported in the article |
| GameFAQs, after release | Ravenclaw: 33.68% (64 of 190 votes) | A self-selected sorting poll |
The pre-release poll measured plans, not final in-game choices; the post-release poll puts Ravenclaw first. GRYOnline cautions that achievement or trophy counts for reaching a story milestone can reflect game progress and replaying, rather than a unique player’s house. None of these opt-in results should be combined with the developer-reported percentages as if they measured the same population in the same way.

Is that the same as the most popular Harry Potter house?
No. A 2019 YouGov survey asked U.S. adults familiar with Harry Potter which house they would prefer if the Sorting Hat asked them. Gryffindor led at 42%, followed by Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw at 24% each, and Slytherin at 10%. The survey predates Hogwarts Legacy and measured general preference—not what players chose in the game. What the numbers establish—and what they do not
- The strongest located game-specific evidence places Slytherin first at 30%, one point ahead of Gryffindor.
- Community polls vary: Slytherin leads in two cited snapshots, while Ravenclaw leads in another.
- The developer-reported figures do not disclose a sample size or collection method, and the community polls are self-selected.
- General franchise preference, first-playthrough intention, a sorting poll, and achievement progress are different measures; their percentages should not be treated as interchangeable.
