What’s actually slowing this PC down?

The best setup depends on what you are trying to fix. Use Gaming Focus (or the Do Not Disturb control) to silence notifications, Game Mode to give a supported game priority over background work, and Low Power Mode to reduce energy use with some performance and display compromises. Adaptive Power can automate some battery-saving behavior, but only on supported iPhone models.
These controls do different jobs. Game Mode is a performance feature, not a promise of longer battery life. Low Power Mode can extend practical battery life, but Apple warns that some tasks may run more slowly and that ProMotion displays are limited to 60 frames per second while it is enabled.

Pick the setting for the problem you actually have
| Setting | Main purpose | What it changes | Availability or requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gaming Focus | Fewer notification interruptions | Filters notifications from people and apps you have not allowed | Available through Settings > Focus; it turns on by default when a wireless gaming controller is connected, according to Apple |
| Do Not Disturb | Fast, broad notification silence | Uses a Focus mode to silence notifications, subject to your allowed-people and allowed-app settings | Available from Control Center > Focus |
| Game Mode | More consistent game performance | Prioritises the game’s CPU and GPU access and lowers background-task use; it also doubles Bluetooth sampling for supported wireless accessories | iPhone running iOS 18 or later and a supported game |
| Low Power Mode | Lower power consumption | Reduces brightness, disables Background App Refresh, removes some visual effects and can slow some tasks; ProMotion is limited to 60 fps | All iPhones with the relevant Battery settings path |
| Adaptive Power | Automatic power management | Can lower brightness, limit background activity, make performance adjustments and enable Low Power Mode at 20% battery | Supported models only; defaults vary by model |
For a competitive session, start with Gaming Focus and leave Low Power Mode off if high refresh-rate behavior matters. For a long trip with no charger, use Low Power Mode and accept its trade-offs. If the game supports Game Mode, it can coexist with either approach because its purpose is performance scheduling rather than notification filtering or battery reduction.

Configure Gaming Focus before you play
- Open Settings > Focus.
- Select Gaming. If it is not already configured, follow the prompts to choose the people and apps that may notify you.
- Allow only the contacts and apps whose alerts you genuinely need during a session. Everyone else is filtered while Gaming Focus is active.
- Review the Focus settings before starting a tournament or recording session, because an allowed app can still produce a notification by design.
Apple says Gaming Focus turns on by default when a wireless gaming controller is connected to an iPhone. If you play with touch controls, or the controller connection does not trigger the mode, select Gaming Focus manually from the Focus controls. The mode filters notifications; it does not remove messages or prevent a game from displaying its own in-game banners, warnings or other content.
Use Do Not Disturb for a quick, broad silence
- Open Control Center by swiping down from the top-right corner of the screen.
- Tap Focus.
- Choose Do Not Disturb.
Do Not Disturb is a Focus option, so its behavior depends on the people and apps you have permitted in Focus settings. Do not assume it blocks every alert: configure the allowed list if an urgent contact must be able to reach you. When the session ends, open the same Control Center menu and turn the mode off, unless you have set a schedule or another automatic rule.

Decide what should still break through
A completely silent phone is not always the safest or most practical choice. A parent, work contact or household member may need to reach you. Gaming Focus lets you make that decision explicitly instead of relying on a blanket silence. Keep the allowed list short enough that it protects the session, but broad enough for the people and apps you have identified as urgent.
Understand what Game Mode does
Requirements
Apple lists two requirements for Game Mode: an iPhone running iOS 18 or later and a supported game. If either condition is missing, the feature is not a guaranteed part of the game’s behavior. Settings labels and availability can also vary by iPhone model and software version.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsPerformance benefits, not a battery promise
Apple’s support article “Use Game Mode” describes the feature this way: “Game Mode optimises your gaming experience by giving your game the highest priority access to your CPU and GPU, lowering usage for background tasks.” In practical terms, iOS gives the game scheduling priority and reduces the amount of processor work competing with it in the background. That can help a supported title deliver smoother, more consistent frame rates and more responsive controls.

Game Mode also doubles Bluetooth sampling for wireless accessories such as game controllers and AirPods. The stated purpose is lower input and audio latency. That is useful for games where controller timing or wireless audio sync matters, but it is still a performance and responsiveness feature rather than an energy-saving setting.
When to use it
Use Game Mode when your priority is stable frame pacing, control responsiveness or reduced background contention. Do not turn it on expecting a measured number of extra minutes per charge: Apple’s documentation does not publish a gaming battery-savings figure for it. Actual drain depends on the title, screen brightness, radio use, temperature, battery health and the particular iPhone.
Reduce battery drain with Low Power Mode
Turn it on from Settings
- On iPhone 15 and later, open Settings > Battery > Power Mode, then turn on Low Power Mode.
- On iPhone 14 and earlier, open Settings > Battery, then turn on Low Power Mode.
Apple also documents adding the Low Power Mode control to Control Center. That gives you a faster way to switch it on before a long session, without leaving the game for the full Settings path.

What changes while it is enabled
Low Power Mode reduces power use by limiting selected features and background activity. Apple lists reduced display brightness, disabled Background App Refresh and the removal of some visual effects among its effects. Those changes can reduce non-game activity and display work, but they may also make the phone look or feel less lively outside the game.
On iPhones with ProMotion, Apple says Low Power Mode limits the display refresh rate to 60 frames per second. If your game, device and display normally benefit from a higher refresh rate, that cap can make motion look less fluid and can undermine the reason for choosing a high-frame-rate mode. Apple also cautions that some tasks may run more slowly. For a turn-based game or a long offline journey, that trade-off may be worthwhile; for a latency-sensitive competitive game, test it before relying on it.
Know when it switches off
Apple’s power-mode guidance says Low Power Mode turns off automatically when the iPhone charges to 80% or higher. Check the Battery settings before the next session if you expected it to remain enabled after charging.

What Adaptive Power does—and who gets it
Adaptive Power is not a universal iPhone gaming switch. On supported models, Apple says it can lower brightness, limit background activity, make performance adjustments and turn on Low Power Mode when the battery reaches 20%.
Recommended Free Tools
Apple lists Adaptive Power as on by default for iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max and iPhone Air. It lists it as off by default for the iPhone 16 family, iPhone 16e and the iPhone 15 Pro models identified on its power-modes page. Those model-specific defaults should not be generalized to every iPhone; if the option is absent, the model or software version may not support it.
Adaptive Power can be useful when you want the phone to react to a falling charge without manually changing settings. It is not a gaming-specific guarantee, and Apple does not provide a quantified improvement in gaming time. Treat it as automatic power management, not as a replacement for a charger or a promise of a fixed number of extra matches.

Combine the controls without creating the wrong trade-off
| Your priority | Recommended setup | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| No notification interruptions | Gaming Focus with a deliberately chosen allowed list | Allowed people and apps can still notify you; game-generated content is not filtered by Focus |
| Immediate silence before a casual session | Control Center > Focus > Do Not Disturb | Review exceptions if urgent contacts must get through |
| Stable performance and lower input latency | Game Mode when iOS 18 or later and a supported game are present | It is not documented as a battery-saving mode |
| Longest practical battery life | Low Power Mode, optionally with Adaptive Power on a supported model | Lower brightness, slower tasks and a 60-fps ProMotion limit |
| High-refresh competitive play | Gaming Focus and Game Mode; leave Low Power Mode off if the 60-fps cap is unacceptable | Battery drain may be higher; no source-supported play-time figure is available |
Gaming Focus and Game Mode address different bottlenecks, so enabling both is sensible when you need uninterrupted play and the game supports Game Mode. Adding Low Power Mode is a separate decision: it may reduce energy use, but its display and task-speed limits can matter more than the saved power in a performance-sensitive title.
Troubleshoot an interrupted or short session
A notification still appeared
- Open Settings > Focus > Gaming and check the allowed people and apps.
- Confirm that Gaming Focus is actually active; a controller connection does not help if the mode was disabled or the connection was not established.
- Remember that Focus filters notifications, not every message, overlay or alert generated inside the game itself.
The game feels less smooth after saving power
- Check whether Low Power Mode is on.
- If the iPhone has ProMotion, account for Apple’s 60-fps refresh-rate limit while Low Power Mode is enabled.
- For a high-frame-rate session, turn Low Power Mode off and use Gaming Focus; use Game Mode when the title and iOS version support it.
The battery still falls quickly
- Do not infer a guaranteed play-time increase from Game Mode or Adaptive Power; Apple does not publish a named-game battery measurement for either feature.
- Check whether Low Power Mode was turned off after charging to 80% or more.
- Recognize that game workload and device conditions affect drain. A demanding 3D title, bright display, wireless accessories and other active radios can consume power differently from a simple offline game.
Controller considerations
A wireless gaming controller is an optional way to play, and Apple’s documentation links controller connections with Gaming Focus activation and Game Mode’s Bluetooth-sampling behavior. Compatibility is not established for every controller model or every game, however. Before buying or relying on one, verify that the controller works with your iPhone model, iOS version and specific game. The settings themselves do not guarantee accessory compatibility.
Quick Recap
A practical pre-game checklist
- Choose Gaming Focus and confirm the people and apps allowed to interrupt you.
- If you need a one-tap broad silence, use Control Center > Focus > Do Not Disturb instead.
- Check that the iPhone runs iOS 18 or later and that the title supports Game Mode if performance is the priority.
- Use Low Power Mode only when the battery benefit outweighs its brightness, background-activity, task-speed and refresh-rate compromises.
- If your model supports Adaptive Power, decide whether its automatic adjustments suit the session rather than assuming every iPhone has the feature.
