Forza Horizon 5 is the stronger pick if you want a large, varied open-world driving playground. Need for Speed Heat is the stronger pick if you want street-racing tension built around a day-and-night cycle and pressure from the police. Before you buy either one, confirm your platform and edition, because both publishers list several versions and storefront details change over time.
Two games built around different fantasies
Forza Horizon 5: open-world driving in Mexico
Forza Horizon 5 is built around exploration. Xbox’s official page describes an evolving open world with hundreds of cars and a broad set of activities to pursue as you drive across the map. The game’s appeal is mostly in the freedom: you choose where to go, what to race, and which challenge to tackle next. The same page says the game has received over 40 content updates, which add cars, races, features, and gameplay experiences. That count comes from Xbox and reflects the game’s status as of 2026.
Need for Speed Heat: hustle by day, risk it by night
Need for Speed Heat is built around a tighter premise. Electronic Arts, the publisher, frames it this way: “Hustle by day, and risk it all by night in Need for Speed Heat, a thrilling race experience that pits you against the city’s rogue police force as you battle your way into street racing’s elite.” The day-and-night split and the police pressure are the core of the design, so the experience is more focused on a single city’s underground scene than on a wide map of varied activities.
In short, Forza Horizon 5 gives you a playground, while Need for Speed Heat gives you a set of stakes. Which one feels better depends on which of those you are looking for.
#1 Best Overall
- Immersive Gaming Experience: Perfect for PlayStation 5, PS4 and PC gaming titles, the Driving Force simulates the feeling of driving a real car with precision steering and pressure-sensitive pedals
- Premium Control: The Driving Force feedback racing wheel provides a detailed simulation of driving a real car, with helical gearing delivering smooth, quiet steering and a hand-stitched leather cover
- Customizable Pedals: These pressure-sensitive nonlinear brake pedals provide a responsive, accurate braking feel on a sturdy base - with adjustable pedal faces for finer control
- 900-Degree Rotation: Lock-to-lock rotation of the Driving Force means you can turn the wheel around two and a half times, hand over hand on wide turns - just like a real F1 race car
- Up Your Game: Take your racing simulation to the next level with Driving Force accessories like the Driving Force Shifter or desk and rig mounts
Customization and creation
Forza Horizon 5 has the more clearly documented creation toolset. Xbox’s official materials describe car body kits, wheels, paint, and tuning, along with the ability to share creations with the community. The game also includes EventLab, which lets players build custom races, challenges, stunts, and modes. If building your own content matters to you, Forza is the one with the more fully described tools.
Need for Speed Heat’s EA listing describes a Deluxe Edition that adds bonus cars, outfits, and boosts. That tells you what the edition includes, but it does not establish how deep Heat’s customization systems are compared with Forza’s. Do not assume one is categorically deeper than the other based on these official pages alone. If customization is a deciding factor for you, compare the specific features you care about in each game’s current version.

Multiplayer and cross-play
Xbox lists online co-op, online multiplayer, and cross-platform multiplayer for Forza Horizon 5. Those are the features the platform owner documents, so check the current platform-specific requirements before you plan a session with friends on another system.
Need for Speed Heat’s cross-play is opt-in. EA Help says it can connect console and PC players, and you can turn it on or off in the game’s settings. The same support page lists limits that matter if you play with a group. Players on different systems cannot join the same Crew, and some community-sharing features remain limited across platforms. If your friends are split across consoles and PC, plan around those restrictions rather than assuming full parity.

Platforms and editions
Both games are sold across several platforms and editions, and the editions differ in what they include. The table below summarizes what each publisher’s official page lists at the time of writing. Storefront listings and regional availability can change, so verify the exact version on the storefront you plan to use.
| Item | Forza Horizon 5 | Need for Speed Heat |
|---|---|---|
| Platforms listed | Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Windows PC, and Steam (Xbox page) | PC (Windows app), Xbox, Steam, and PlayStation store paths (EA page) |
| Editions listed | Standard, Deluxe, and Premium (Xbox page) | Standard and Deluxe, plus separately purchasable add-ons (EA page) |
| Deluxe contents | The game and Car Pass (Xbox page) | Bonus cars, outfits, and boosts (EA page) |

Xbox says Forza Horizon 5 on Series X|S is optimized for 4K Ultra HD, 60 FPS, and ray tracing. Those are the platform owner’s capability claims, not a guarantee of identical performance in every configuration. Xbox also describes Smart Delivery support for the Xbox One and Series X|S versions. EA’s US-localized Heat page displayed a temporary price when it was accessed, and that figure should not be treated as a durable or general price.

Online requirements and service status
Need for Speed Heat requires an internet connection and an EA account, according to EA’s terms. EA also states that it may retire online features after giving notice, so the online experience is not guaranteed indefinitely. Treat that as a time-sensitive detail and check the current terms before you buy.
This comparison does not establish equivalent service terms for Forza Horizon 5, so check Xbox’s current listing and support information for its online requirements.
Quick Recap
Which one to choose
- Choose Forza Horizon 5 if you want to drive freely across a large map, chase a long list of activities, and build or share your own races and challenges with EventLab and the tuning and paint tools.
- Choose Need for Speed Heat if you want a focused street-racing story with police pursuit, and if the day-and-night structure of its city appeals more than an open landscape full of activities.
- Consider your platform first. Both games list PC and console options, but the exact versions, editions, and storefronts differ. Confirm that the edition you want is available on your platform before comparing content.
- Consider who you play with. If your group is mixed across systems, Forza’s documented cross-platform multiplayer and Heat’s opt-in cross-play, with its Crew limits, lead to different experiences.
