When to choose Psychic
Choose Psychic when immediate damage matters most. Its base power is 25 points higher than Psybeam’s while its listed accuracy is the same. It can also lower the target’s Special Defense by one stage, but that effect is only a 10% chance—not a guaranteed bonus.
When Psybeam makes sense
Psybeam is worth considering when you value having more uses before needing to restore PP: it has 20 PP compared with Psychic’s 10 in the Scarlet and Violet data. Its 10% chance to confuse the target may also be preferable in a situation where that effect is useful. Its listed description reads, “The target is attacked with a peculiar ray. This may also confuse the target.”

What the comparison does not settle
These move figures alone do not establish which option is best for every Pokémon or battle. The user Pokémon’s stats, whether it can learn each move, the opponent, and the battle format can all affect the choice. The values here are specifically for Scarlet and Violet; check the move data for the particular Pokémon game you are playing if it differs.
