Neither game is objectively better. Choose Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice if you want a tightly focused sword duel built around deflecting, breaking enemy posture, and punishing with a deathblow. Choose Ghost of Tsushima if you want a large open-world samurai adventure where you can fight head-on, shoot from range, or sneak around encounters. The rest of this comparison explains what each game’s official materials actually establish, so you can match the game to the experience you want.
How the two games approach combat
Combat is where these two games differ most, and it is the main reason players pick one over the other.

Sekiro: deflection, posture, and deathblows
Activision’s official mechanics guide, dated March 22, 2019, explains that a successful deflection damages an enemy’s posture and creates a counterattack opportunity. Sustained attacks and deflections can break posture, which opens a short window for a Shinobi Deathblow. Some powerful enemies need more than one posture break before a deathblow is available. The system also includes combat arts, three skill trees, stealth-related skills, and ninjutsu techniques. Beyond the sword, the official description highlights stealth, vertical traversal, and prosthetic tools as ways to approach an encounter. The result is a combat loop that rewards reading an enemy’s rhythm and responding precisely, with a set of alternatives for when a direct duel is not the best option.

Ghost of Tsushima: katana, bow, and stealth
PlayStation’s official overview describes three main channels: close-range katana combat, bow attacks against distant enemies, and stealth or deception tactics that disorient and ambush opponents. It is still an action game built around sword fighting, but the emphasis is on choosing among several approaches within a single encounter, or across a whole region. Ghost of Tsushima on PlayStation
Which combat style fits you
- Pick Sekiro if you enjoy learning one interlocking system deeply, timing parries, and winning through posture and deathblow setups.
- Pick Ghost of Tsushima if you want to switch between duels, archery, and stealth depending on your mood or the terrain.
Difficulty and challenge
“Sekiro is harder” is a common opinion among players, but neither the official Sekiro materials nor the official Ghost materials establish a measured difficulty ranking, so this article does not make that claim.

The concrete difference is narrower. PlayStation lists adjustable difficulty among Ghost of Tsushima’s accessibility features, so a player who wants to tune the challenge has a documented option there. The official Sekiro pages cited here do not document a selectable difficulty setting. That does not prove Sekiro lacks one, only that it is not described in the sources reviewed. If adjustable challenge is a deciding factor for you, check the current in-game settings menu on your platform before buying.
Exploration, setting, and story
Sekiro’s world and protagonist
Sekiro places Wolf in late-1500s Sengoku Japan, where his personal mission is to protect a young lord and regain his honor. In a PlayStation Blog interview dated July 13, 2018, director Hidetaka Miyazaki said the story is centered on its protagonist, while world and story details emerge during play. Deep in the mountains, in a dilapidated temple, you reawaken to your fate. You must take back your master and exact revenge on your enemy at all cost
- Hard to the core – Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is a hard-core game worthy of the name FromSoftware. Miyazaki designed Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice this way! Fans of FromSoftware will find the gameplay challenging, yet fun and rewarding. The quality of combat, level of challenge, and creative enemies and bosses are something that can only be found in a FromSoftware title
- Reimagined world – This reimagining of Japanese aesthetic blends a withered, yet vivid, world of the late 1500s Sengoku Japan as the age of warring states nears its end. Witness a world brought to its knees by constant bloodshed; a ravaged world on the brink of destruction. Explore these environments, rich with FromSoftware’s intricate design and steeped with secrets to discover
Miyazaki’s comment on approach is the most direct statement of the game’s design philosophy. Because the interview was conducted through an interpreter and edited for length and clarity, the wording below is the published version:
“There are lots of different ways to approach a battle, such as stealth, or using your arm tools.”

Exploration in Sekiro is vertical and stealth-oriented rather than a broad map of separate regions, and its movement tools are part of how you reach and approach enemies.
Ghost of Tsushima’s island and protagonist
Ghost of Tsushima follows Jin Sakai after Mongol forces defeat the samurai defending Tsushima. Jin must decide whether to follow the samurai customs in which he was raised or use unconventional tactics to protect the island and its people. The game is set across an open-world island, and the Director’s Cut adds the Iki Island expansion, which PlayStation lists as part of that package.
Best Value
Choosing by story and setting
The two games are not better or worse as stories; they offer different experiences. Sekiro is a focused, supernatural-tinged Sengoku story built around one defined protagonist’s mission. Ghost is an open-world samurai story centered on a conflict between honor and necessity. If you want a tightly authored personal mission, Sekiro suits you. If you want to roam a large island and shape your own approach to its conflict, Ghost suits you better.
