For a first playthrough, play Birth by Sleep before KINGDOM HEARTS HD 2.8 if you can. It gives useful context for 0.2 Birth by Sleep, the collection’s playable episode. Within HD 2.8, start with Dream Drop Distance HD, then play 0.2; watch χ Back Cover as a story movie. The broader pre-2.8 sequence below is a newcomer-friendly recommendation, not an official required checklist.
What is included in HD 2.8?
HD 2.8 is a collection of three different kinds of content, not three full games. Square Enix lists Dream Drop Distance HD, χ Back Cover, and 0.2 Birth by Sleep – A fragmentary passage –; the PlayStation Store listing also describes those three components (PlayStation Store).
- Dream Drop Distance HD: a full-HD remaster of the game.
- 0.2 Birth by Sleep – A fragmentary passage –: a playable episode.
- χ Back Cover: a movie to watch, not a game to play.
Which games should you play before HD 2.8?
Prioritize Birth by Sleep
Birth by Sleep is the most directly relevant earlier game. Square Enix says that 0.2 takes place after Birth by Sleep’s storyline and links to KINGDOM HEARTS III. Playing Birth by Sleep first therefore gives 0.2 more context.
For broader story context, play earlier entries too
KINGDOM HEARTS has story context beyond its numbered games, so playing only the numbered entries may leave gaps. If you are starting the series, work through the earlier story entries available to you before HD 2.8, rather than treating the collection as a standalone introduction. KINGDOM HEARTS HD 1.5 + 2.5 ReMIX is an option to investigate for earlier series context; check that the edition and platform are available where you live.

There is no complete mandatory pre-2.8 checklist established by the official product descriptions. Treat the broader sequence as guidance for a first playthrough, not a publisher rule. If your goal is only to play the included content, you can begin with Dream Drop Distance HD.
What order should you play the games in HD 2.8?
- Dream Drop Distance HD: play this as the collection’s main game.
- 0.2 Birth by Sleep – A fragmentary passage –: play this after Birth by Sleep if you have reached that earlier entry.
- χ Back Cover: watch the collection’s story movie. The official descriptions identify it as a movie but do not require a particular spot in the sequence.
The official product descriptions establish the collection’s contents and the connections between Birth by Sleep, 0.2, and KINGDOM HEARTS III; they do not mandate one order for every component.
