Riot’s February 26, 2025 course correction restored Hextech Chests to planned free Battle Pass and Honor rewards and cut Blue Essence costs for all champions by 50% in patch 25.05. It was a partial reversal—not a return to every older reward system or an abandonment of seasonal Battle Passes.
What changes did Riot reverse?
Riot described its move as a response to player feedback. In a February 26, 2025 developer post, Meddler and Pabro wrote: “Recently, we’ve made a number of changes that didn’t hit the mark for everyone.” The company said players valued Hextech Chests because they helped make time spent in League feel rewarding, and that making a champion roster accessible was a particular challenge for newer players.

How were Hextech Chests supposed to return?
Riot’s announced schedule was 10 earnable Hextech Chests and Keys per Act: eight through the free Battle Pass and two through Honor. Riot said that would amount to a maximum of 60 per year under the plan. The chests were to be the same type as those previously earned through Champion Mastery, but the announced route was different: the Battle Pass and Honor, not simply restoration of the old Champion Mastery reward path.
Riot’s patch 25.05 notes also said the free Battle Pass skin would be replaced by chests. That detail matters: the revision changed what the free pass offered rather than adding chests while leaving that skin reward untouched.

What else was included in the adjustment?
Patch 25.05 confirmed the chest and Blue Essence changes and also listed a return to monthly Clash events. Riot gave target patches for the return of Your Shop and the Blue Essence Emporium. Those targets described Riot’s 2025 rollout plan; they do not establish the current schedule or availability of those systems in October 2026. Check later patch notes for their status.

No. The announcements describe a targeted adjustment to rewards and champion pricing, not a wholesale return to the old system. Riot continued with seasonal Battle Passes, kept the chest rewards on the free pass and Honor routes, and did not say that every prior reward mechanic was being restored. The November 2024 announcement also distinguished Masterwork Chests from Hextech Chests: Masterwork Chest sales and some reward placements were ending, while Hextech Chests remained available.
