For Artyom’s main story, play Metro 2033 first, then Metro: Last Light, and Metro Exodus third. If you see Metro Redux, that is a collection of updated versions of the first two games—not a separate chapter you need to fit into the order.
What order should you play the Metro games in?
- Metro 2033 Redux — begins Artyom’s story and introduces the Moscow Metro setting.
- Metro: Last Light Redux — continues the main story as the second game.
- Metro Exodus — follows Artyom beyond the Moscow tunnels.
This is the recommended order for the main Artyom story, and it matches the sequence on Deep Silver’s official Metro story-so-far page.

Is Metro Redux a separate game?
No. Metro Redux is a two-game collection containing Metro 2033 and Metro: Last Light in their Redux editions. Treat it as a way to get the first two games, not as a fourth entry or an extra story chapter.
PLAION describes Metro 2033 Redux as rebuilt using the Last Light engine and gameplay framework. It also offers Spartan and Survival play styles. Where do the Exodus expansions fit?
The Two Colonels and Sam’s Story are expansions for Metro Exodus, not additional main-series games. They are optional add-ons for players who want more Exodus content. The available official listings identify them as expansions but do not establish a precise spoiler-aware point within the base game to start each one, so there is no need to insert them into the three-game sequence above.
The Xbox Metro Saga Bundle listing includes all three main games and both Exodus expansions. Check the listing for your platform and edition before buying; bundle contents and availability can vary by storefront.

Do you need to read the Metro books first?
No. The novels are optional context, not a prerequisite for understanding the games. Deep Silver identifies Dmitry Glukhovsky as the author of the Metro novels and creator of the wider universe, but the game-order guidance does not require reading them before playing. Start with Metro 2033 if you want to follow Artyom’s story from its beginning.

Look for the Redux editions of the first two games, commonly available together as Metro Redux, then play Metro Exodus. If you want the complete main-game run and the Exodus add-ons in one package, the Metro Saga Bundle is another option; its official Xbox listing names the three main games and both expansions. Confirm the platform and exact edition on the storefront you plan to use, since a bundle listing for one platform does not establish what is available on another.

Metro Exodus shifts the journey beyond the Moscow tunnels while retaining the series’ story-driven first-person shooter approach, blending combat, stealth, exploration, and survival horror, as described on Deep Silver’s official Metro Exodus page. For a newcomer, that makes it the natural third game rather than a starting point.
