Choose a game by matching the experience you want with the player, platform, and practical limits—not by genre or a recommendation alone. Use this checklist to build a shortlist, then verify the exact edition and listing before you buy.
1. Decide what you want to do
Start with the activity and mood you want: explore, solve puzzles, compete, build, follow a story, play sports, or cooperate. Then narrow the format: solo, local multiplayer, or online; a brief session or a game you expect to return to over time. Genre is a helpful first filter, but it cannot guarantee the pace, difficulty, or feel of a particular game.

The ESRB recommends considering genre and using gameplay videos or reviews as selection aids in its Selecting Appropriate Video Games guide.
2. Confirm the platform and edition
Check that the game runs on hardware or an operating system you can use before getting attached to a recommendation. Availability and edition contents can differ between platforms, so compare the exact version you are considering rather than assuming that a game’s name means the same thing everywhere.

The ESRB search tool includes platform filters, including Nintendo, PlayStation, Xbox, and Windows/Mac categories. Its interface and game data can change, so use the current retailer or platform listing to confirm support for a specific title.
3. Match the challenge and controls to the player
Think about the player’s comfort with speed, precision, reading, camera movement, and control complexity. A game that sounds appealing can still be a poor fit if its moment-to-moment demands are frustrating or inaccessible.

If accessibility or input needs matter, inspect the game’s own accessibility information and check whether its controls work for the player. Microsoft’s gaming accessibility guidance discusses considerations such as custom button mapping and controller choice; these options are not available in every game.
4. Read the rating and content details
An age category is a starting point, not a complete suitability verdict. Read the content descriptors for subjects that matter to the player or caregiver. In North America, the ESRB system includes age categories, content descriptors, and interactive elements. Its guide explains that ratings are one factor in deciding whether a game is appropriate, and recommends rating summaries for physical games.

Ratings differ by geography. If you are outside an ESRB market, consult the rating authority shown in your local store. The ESRB also explains where to check a rating—in its selection guide—including on product pages when shopping online and on physical game boxes.
5. Check online and purchase features
Look for notices about online interaction, in-game purchases, location sharing, and randomized paid items. These features may affect a player’s experience or a household’s rules; whether they are acceptable is a personal decision, not something a rating label can decide for you.
Rank #4
- An Epic Games account is required to redeem an Epic Games Store Card code
- If playing on a console platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch or Mobile) you need to link your Epic Games account to that gaming platform (one time) to redeem your gift card code
- The 16 digit code on the back of the card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly through your gaming platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch, Mobile, etc.)
- Note: Nintendo devices do not support Fortnite Shared Wallet, so V-Bucks purchased using your account balance will not show up on your Nintendo device. However, if you purchase items in the web Item Shop — or another platform where you play Fortnite — those items will be available in your Locker across all platforms.
- Redemption: Online
The ESRB describes interactive elements such as in-game purchases, user interaction, and location sharing. It separately identifies randomized-item purchases, which can include loot boxes, gacha, item packs, prize wheels, and mystery awards. Its search filters can exclude some content and features, though the available filters may change.

Watch gameplay footage and look for reviews that address your priorities: pacing, repetition, difficulty, interface, performance, or multiplayer conditions. A trailer or store description can explain the pitch, but footage and detailed reviews are more useful for judging what you will actually do during play.

The ESRB recommends gameplay videos and reviews as selection aids in its guide. Treat reviews as evidence about other people’s experiences, not a promise that your own will be identical.
7. Compare the shortlist on what matters
If several games remain, compare them on the factors that can change your decision. This is a practical framework, not a standardized score: weight the categories according to the player and household.
| What to compare | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Play experience | Does the genre, pace, challenge, or session length appeal? Is play solo, cooperative, or competitive? |
| Practical fit | Is it available for the platform and hardware you have? Do the controls and accessibility options work for the player? |
| Suitability | Do the age rating and content descriptors fit? Are online interaction and purchase features acceptable? |
| Confidence | Do gameplay footage and reviews address the specific concerns you have? |
| Purchase | Does the exact edition and format match what you want, and are the current price, availability, and terms acceptable? |
8. Check the live listing before buying
Before placing an order, confirm the exact title, platform, edition, format, rating, included content, current price, and purchase terms on the retailer or platform page. A general recommendation cannot establish current price, stock, edition contents, or return terms. These details can change, so use the live listing rather than an older review or search result.
The ESRB notes that ratings may be checked on online shopping product pages and physical game boxes in its selection guide. For a physical copy, make sure the box and platform compatibility match the version you intend to play.
