Choose based on your device and the people you want to play with. On Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, iOS, or Android, you’ll use Bedrock Edition. On a Windows PC, the Java & Bedrock bundle includes both, so you can launch the edition your friends use. On Mac or Linux, choose Java Edition. Java and Bedrock players cannot join one another’s standard multiplayer sessions.

Which Minecraft Edition Should You Buy for PC, Console, or Mobile?

There isn’t one best edition for everyone: the right choice depends first on where you play, then on multiplayer and the features you want. The key distinction is that Java and Bedrock are separate versions with separate multiplayer networks. Owning or launching one does not let you join a standard game running the other.

Use this quick decision guide:

  • Windows PC: The Java & Bedrock PC bundle includes both editions. Launch Java for Java friends, community mods, or Java servers; launch Bedrock for console or mobile friends, controller input, or Marketplace content.
  • Mac or Linux: Choose Java Edition.
  • Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, iOS, or Android: Choose Bedrock Edition for that device.
  • Not sure what your friends have? Ask whether they play Java or Bedrock before buying. A Windows bundle offers both, but everyone still needs to launch the same edition to play together.

Minecraft’s official Java/Bedrock guide gives the same practical advice: ask friends which version they have, because the two editions cannot play together in ordinary sessions.

How Java and Bedrock differ

Both editions are Minecraft, but platform availability, multiplayer compatibility, customization, and controls differ. This comparison reflects Minecraft’s official platform and PC store information available in 2026; platform listings, requirements, and service terms can change.

#1 Best Overall
Minecraft - Nintendo Switch
  • Minecraft is a game about placing blocks and going on adventures

  • Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs
  • Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes
  • Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only
What matters Java Edition Bedrock Edition
Supported platforms Windows, macOS, and Linux Windows, Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, iOS, and Android
Who you can play with Other Java players on supported computers Bedrock players across supported Windows, console, and mobile devices
Customization and servers Community-created mods and a broad third-party server ecosystem Minecraft Marketplace content, character customization, and add-ons
Controls Keyboard and mouse; no native controller support, according to Minecraft’s official store FAQ Supports controller input; mobile also supports touch controls
Console split-screen Not listed for Java in Minecraft’s official comparison Listed for console Bedrock; check the chosen console’s current store details
PC memory requirements on the current official store page Minimum: 8 GB with a discrete GPU or 12 GB with integrated graphics; recommended: 16 GB Minimum: 4 GB; recommended: 8 GB

The practical distinction is not that one edition is universally better, but that each is built around a different set of devices and ways to play. Java is the fit for computer players who want community mods and Java servers. Bedrock is the fit when console or mobile cross-play, touch controls, controller input, or Marketplace content matters. On a Windows PC, you can choose either from the bundle, but you still need to launch the matching edition for a multiplayer session.

Pick by device and the people you want to join

Windows PC

Windows buyers get access to both editions through the Java & Bedrock bundle. That flexibility is useful if your group is split across computer and console players, or if you want to choose between community mods and Bedrock’s cross-platform play. The bundle does not combine the editions: when you join a friend, launch the version that friend is using.

For a group spanning Windows, consoles, and phones or tablets, Bedrock is usually the practical fit because it supports cross-play across those device types. Minecraft’s current store FAQ lists Windows 10 and Windows 11, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch and Switch 2, PS5, PS4, and mobile among supported Bedrock cross-play platforms. Check the current listing for your specific device before purchase.

If your friends play Java, or your priority is Java’s mod and server ecosystem, launch Java instead. Bedrock on Windows is not a substitute for Java simply because both are included with the PC bundle.

Mac or Linux

Choose Java Edition. Minecraft identifies Java as available for Windows, macOS, and Linux; Bedrock is not offered as a native edition for Mac or Linux. If you want to play with friends on those computers, confirm they are also launching Java. A Windows player can do so from the bundle.

Minecraft: Switch Edition
  • Explore randomly-generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
  • Play in Creative Mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armour to fend off the dangerous mobs

Console or mobile

Choose Bedrock for Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, iOS, or Android. This is the edition that connects console and mobile players with Bedrock players on supported Windows devices. If your household plays on more than one of those device types, first confirm everyone has Bedrock and can access online multiplayer on their platform.

Local console play

If your goal is split-screen with family or friends on the same console, Bedrock is the relevant edition: Minecraft’s comparison lists split-screen for console Bedrock, not Java. Availability and details can vary by console, so verify the current store information for the exact system you plan to use. This is a local-play consideration, distinct from cross-play over the internet; split-screen availability does not change which edition players on another device need.

What to check before buying for multiplayer

Matching editions are necessary, but they are not the only conditions for joining a game. Use this checklist before troubleshooting an apparent connection problem:

  1. Confirm the edition. Each player should launch Bedrock or each should launch Java. A Java player cannot join a standard Bedrock game, or vice versa.
  2. Check device compatibility. Java is for supported computers; Bedrock is the option for console and mobile cross-play. Bedrock cross-play is limited to the supported platform versions listed by Minecraft.
  3. Use current releases. Minecraft’s multiplayer guidance recommends that players use the latest release. If one person has an update waiting, bring the game versions into alignment before trying again.
  4. Check the connection. Online multiplayer needs a stable internet connection; local-network play needs a working local network connection.
  5. Check accounts and permissions. Console and mobile players use a Microsoft account. If a child account cannot access multiplayer, the account’s multiplayer permissions may need to be enabled.
  6. Check console online access. Online console multiplayer requires a platform subscription sold separately. Minecraft’s current support guidance names Xbox Game Pass Core, PlayStation Plus, and Nintendo Switch Online.

These checks address different issues: a subscription or permission setting cannot make Java and Bedrock compatible, and matching editions alone do not remove a console subscription requirement. For a cross-platform group, Bedrock is the common edition for Windows, console, and mobile players; Java cross-play is between Windows, macOS, and Linux players who are all using Java.

Plan for the console subscription as a separate part of the online-play decision. Minecraft names Xbox Game Pass Core, PlayStation Plus, and Nintendo Switch Online for console multiplayer; the subscription is sold separately from Minecraft. No single price applies across those services, so check the relevant platform’s current subscription terms. A controller, by contrast, is not a required add-on purchase for Bedrock: controller input is supported, while mobile also offers touch controls.

Mods, Marketplace content, and servers

Choose Java for community mods and Java servers

Java is the fit for players who want community-created mods or access to Java’s third-party server ecosystem. That choice comes with more responsibility for managing community software and server choices. Minecraft’s official comparison associates mods and the broader third-party server ecosystem with Java; it does not make Java mods transferable to Bedrock.

Choose Bedrock for Marketplace content and add-ons

Bedrock includes the Minecraft Marketplace, character customization, and add-ons. Marketplace items are accessed or purchased through Minecraft’s in-game store, and Minecoins are associated with Bedrock Marketplace content. Add-ons and Marketplace content are not interchangeable with Java mods; do not assume that a world or a customization package will transfer freely between editions.

Consider where your group plays as well as what content you prefer. A Java mod setup is useful only if the players you want to join can use the same Java environment; Marketplace content is the Bedrock path. The editions’ content systems do not erase the multiplayer boundary between them.

These are different customization paths, not two names for the same catalog. If you want to use Minecraft Marketplace content, choose Bedrock; if you want community-created Java mods, choose Java. Marketplace purchases and Minecoins are optional, and the editions’ content should not be treated as a way to convert a Java world or mod into a Bedrock item.

Realms and private multiplayer

For a private hosted world, Java Realms and Bedrock Realms Plus serve different editions. Players need the matching edition for the Realm they join. Minecraft’s current store comparison lists support for up to 10 friends at a time on a Realm. That is a current product detail from Mojang Studios’ store information accessed in 2026, not a permanent rule for every future plan or service configuration; check current terms before subscribing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Realms are optional. They do not change which devices can run each edition, provide cross-play between Java and Bedrock, or remove the separate online subscription requirement that applies to console multiplayer. Choose the Realm option for the edition your group uses, and verify its current terms if the number of players or service features matters to your plan.

Will your PC run it?

Minecraft’s current official PC store page lists different memory requirements for the two editions. These are stated requirements, not performance benchmarks or a promise about frame rate. Compare them with your computer’s hardware and check the current store page for the complete, up-to-date requirements before buying.

PC edition Minimum memory listed Recommended memory listed
Bedrock 4 GB 8 GB
Java 8 GB with a discrete GPU, or 12 GB with integrated graphics 16 GB

Do not use the memory figures as a shortcut for deciding which edition you want. A PC that meets one edition’s listed requirements does not make that edition compatible with friends playing the other. Make the multiplayer and platform choice first, then verify the relevant system requirements for your hardware. In particular, use the listed Java minimum that matches whether your PC has a discrete or integrated GPU, and check the full current requirements rather than treating memory as the only hardware factor.

A simple way to make the final choice

  1. Write down the devices in your group. If the group includes console or mobile players, plan around Bedrock. If everyone is on supported computers and prefers Java, choose Java.
  2. Ask each friend which edition they launch. “Minecraft on PC” is not specific enough: a Windows PC player may use Java or Bedrock.
  3. Match the edition to your preferred features. Favor Java for community mods and Java servers; favor Bedrock for Marketplace content, mobile touch controls, or controller input.
  4. Check the extra requirements. On console, account for the relevant online subscription; on PC, compare your hardware with the current store requirements.
  5. On Windows, launch deliberately. The bundle includes both, but multiplayer still requires selecting the same edition as the people you want to join.

In short, buy or launch the edition that fits your device and your friends’ edition. Windows PC buyers have both options; Mac and Linux players use Java, while console and mobile players use Bedrock.

Do I need a subscription to play Minecraft online on console?

Online console multiplayer requires a platform subscription sold separately. Minecraft’s current support guidance lists Xbox Game Pass Core, PlayStation Plus, and Nintendo Switch Online. Check your platform for current subscription terms.

Can Java and Bedrock players join the same Realm?

No. Java Realms and Bedrock Realms Plus serve different editions, so players need to use the matching edition for the Realm. Minecraft’s current store comparison lists up to 10 friends at a time on a Realm; check current product terms because service details can change.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Choose Bedrock for console or mobile, and for cross-play with those players. Choose Java on Mac or Linux, or on Windows if you want Java friends, community mods, or Java servers. Windows PC buyers get both editions in the Java & Bedrock bundle—but must still launch the one their friends use.
