Which Nintendo Games Have Used Unreal Engine? Key Facts and Examples

Yes. Several games published by Nintendo and developed by outside partners have been publicly reported as using Unreal Engine, including The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening, Yoshi’s Crafted World and Mario & Luigi: Brothership. Fortnite also brings an Unreal-associated game to Nintendo Switch, although it is an Epic title rather than a Nintendo-developed game.

The important qualification is what “Nintendo game” means. Nintendo may be the console maker, the publisher, or the internal developer. The available evidence supports Nintendo-platform releases and several Nintendo-published, partner-developed examples. It does not establish that an internal Nintendo development team has shipped a game made with Unreal Engine.

What counts as a “Nintendo game”?

The question combines three different claims. Separating them prevents a game’s platform, publisher and developer from being treated as the same thing.

Meaning What it tells you What the available evidence supports
Released on Nintendo hardware The game runs on a Nintendo console, such as Nintendo Switch. Unreal Engine supports Nintendo Switch development, and Fortnite is listed for Nintendo Switch.
Published by Nintendo Nintendo handled publication for the title, while another studio may have built it. Link’s Awakening, Yoshi’s Crafted World and Mario & Luigi: Brothership have been reported as Unreal Engine projects.
Developed internally by Nintendo A Nintendo-owned internal development group made the game. No authoritative confirmation was found here that an internal Nintendo team has shipped a game using Unreal Engine.

Nintendo’s publication credit therefore cannot, by itself, prove that Nintendo selected the engine or wrote the game’s technology. Partner studios can use their own tools while Nintendo publishes, funds, markets or approves the finished product.

Nintendo-published games reported to use Unreal Engine

The following titles are the clearest examples associated with Nintendo publication and public Unreal Engine attributions. The engine information for these three games comes from secondary references rather than a definitive Nintendo technology statement, so the wording below distinguishes a reported attribution from a confirmed first-party technical disclosure.

The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening (2019)

Public reference material identifies the Nintendo Switch remake as using Unreal Engine 4. Nintendo published the game, but that publishing role does not demonstrate that an internal Nintendo team developed its engine technology. Treat “Unreal Engine 4” as a reported attribution unless you are checking the game’s primary credits or a direct statement from the developers.

The example is useful because the game has a distinctive miniature-diorama look, yet Unreal Engine can support highly stylized rendering as well as realistic presentation. An engine name alone does not tell you that a game will resemble other Unreal projects; art direction, custom shaders, asset pipelines and platform optimization determine the final appearance.

Yoshi’s Crafted World (2019)

Public reference material also identifies Yoshi’s Crafted World as an Unreal Engine 4 game. Good-Feel developed the title and Nintendo published it. That developer–publisher split is exactly why “a Nintendo game” should not automatically be read as “a game made by Nintendo’s internal engine team.”

For this title, the reported engine attribution describes the technology used by the partner developer. It does not establish that every Nintendo-published game follows the same production pipeline, that Nintendo mandates Unreal, or that Nintendo has replaced its own internal tools.

Mario & Luigi: Brothership (2024)

Public reference material identifies Mario & Luigi: Brothership as using Unreal Engine. Because the available attribution is secondary, it is more precise to call the game “reported as Unreal Engine-based” than to present a specific engine version as an official Nintendo disclosure.

The 2024 release demonstrates that Unreal-related development is not limited to an older Switch launch window. It still does not answer whether Nintendo’s internal teams use Unreal for their own projects; the title’s publication relationship and its underlying development credits are separate questions.

Fortnite shows Unreal on Nintendo Switch, not Nintendo development

Nintendo’s official store listing confirms that Fortnite is available for Nintendo Switch. The same product page includes Epic’s Unreal Engine trademarks. This establishes that a game associated with Unreal Engine runs on Nintendo hardware.

Fortnite is an Epic game, not a Nintendo-developed or Nintendo-published example. It belongs in the platform discussion: it proves Unreal-powered software can be delivered on Switch, while the three titles above answer the narrower Nintendo-published question.

Does Nintendo itself use Unreal Engine?

There is no confirmed answer in the public material considered here. The evidence does not establish that an internal Nintendo development team has shipped a game using Unreal Engine, but it also does not prove that Nintendo never uses it internally. “No public confirmation found” is the accurate boundary; “Nintendo does not use Unreal” would be an unsupported absolute.

Nintendo of America president Doug Bowser described the company’s partner approach in a 2019 TIME interview: “We work closely with each partner – each partner may have a different need, obviously the ability to build on commonly available engines like Unity or like Unreal enables those indie publishers to build content for Nintendo Switch, then we work with our publishing partners depending on what need they may have from either a development standpoint or a marketing standpoint to make sure we’re a platform of choice for them.”

That statement addresses third-party and independent development. It explains why Nintendo supports commonly available engines without revealing the engine choices of Nintendo’s own internal studios. A public engine attribution for a Nintendo-published game likewise identifies the project’s technology, not necessarily Nintendo’s corporate technology strategy.

Is Unreal Engine supported on Nintendo Switch and Switch 2?

Yes. Epic’s official Unreal Engine documentation lists Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 among supported console-development platforms. Support means developers can target those systems through the appropriate tools and agreements; it does not mean every Unreal feature has identical performance or availability on each console.

Switch-specific Unreal documentation is permission-gated. A developer needs confirmed Nintendo developer status and the applicable Epic console access, agreements and permissions. The public documentation therefore cannot be treated as a downloadable, unrestricted setup guide for anyone with the engine installed.

What a studio generally needs before accessing Switch material

  1. Register as a Nintendo developer. Nintendo must confirm the developer or organization through its developer program.
  2. Meet Epic’s console-access requirements. Epic’s console documentation and agreements govern access to platform-specific Unreal materials.
  3. Accept the relevant confidentiality terms. Console documentation and SDK information can be covered by Nintendo or Epic nondisclosure requirements.
  4. Use the approved development environment. The studio then follows the Switch or Switch 2 integration guidance supplied through the authorized portals, rather than relying only on the public desktop-engine documentation.
  5. Optimize and certify the build. A project that runs in the editor still has to meet Nintendo’s technical, performance and submission requirements before release.

The exact SDK steps, build settings and feature restrictions are not public in the general Unreal documentation because console access is controlled by the platform holder and Epic.

How to evaluate an Unreal Engine claim for a Nintendo title

Engine claims are often repeated from databases, interviews or community research. Use a consistent evidence standard before treating a version number as definitive.

  • Start with primary credits. Check the game’s legal notices, credits, manuals, splash screens or official technical materials for an engine notice.
  • Look for a developer statement. A studio interview, technical presentation or postmortem can confirm the engine and sometimes the version.
  • Separate engine from middleware. A title may use one engine plus third-party physics, audio, animation or rendering components. A middleware trademark does not automatically identify the main engine.
  • Record the version only when it is stated. Unreal Engine 4 and Unreal Engine 5 are different claims. If a source says only “Unreal Engine,” do not upgrade it to a numbered version.
  • Identify the developer and publisher. This prevents a partner-developed game from being presented as evidence about Nintendo’s internal tools.
  • Check the platform. A game can use Unreal on another platform while using a substantially different build, feature set or rendering path on Switch.

For the three Nintendo-published examples in this article, the responsible wording is “reported as using Unreal Engine,” with “Unreal Engine 4” attached to Link’s Awakening and Yoshi’s Crafted World only where that public attribution is specifically made. Mario & Luigi: Brothership should be described without asserting a version unless a primary credit supplies one.

Why a partner studio might choose Unreal for a Nintendo project

Unreal can give a partner access to a mature editor, rendering systems, animation tools, asset workflows and cross-platform technology. Those advantages matter when a studio wants to ship on Nintendo hardware while also maintaining versions for other platforms or reusing established production skills.

Using a common engine does not remove platform-specific work. Switch hardware has its own memory, CPU, GPU, storage and certification constraints. A studio still has to profile the game, reduce asset and shader costs where necessary, manage loading and streaming, adapt controls and satisfy Nintendo’s submission requirements. Engine support makes a platform possible; it does not guarantee a particular frame rate, resolution or feature set.

Unreal also does not dictate a game’s genre or visual style. The stylized presentation of Link’s Awakening and Yoshi’s Crafted World illustrates that a general-purpose engine can be heavily customized. Conversely, a game can look technically similar to another title without sharing the same engine.

Common mistakes when answering this question

“Nintendo published it, so Nintendo made it with Unreal.”

Publication and development are different credits. A partner studio may build the game and choose the engine while Nintendo publishes it.

“Unreal runs on Switch, so every Nintendo game can use it.”

Epic supports Switch and Switch 2, but access requires Nintendo developer approval and Epic’s console permissions. Studios also have to do their own optimization and certification work.

“A reported engine entry is an official Nintendo confirmation.”

Secondary references can be useful leads, but they are not equivalent to a primary credit or developer statement. This distinction matters especially when naming an Unreal version.

“No public confirmation means Nintendo never uses Unreal.”

The available evidence does not establish internal Nintendo use, but absence of a public statement is not proof of a permanent policy or prohibition.

Bottom line

Nintendo games do use Unreal Engine in the broad sense: Unreal supports Nintendo consoles, Fortnite is available on Switch, and several Nintendo-published partner projects are publicly reported as Unreal titles. The best-known examples are The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening and Yoshi’s Crafted World, both reported as Unreal Engine 4 games, plus Mario & Luigi: Brothership, reported as using Unreal Engine. None of those facts proves that Nintendo’s internal development teams have shipped an Unreal game, so that narrower claim remains unestablished by the public evidence available here.
