Nintendo Switch 2 can play compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games, but there is no single “full list” that treats every problem as outright incompatibility. Nintendo separates games that cannot start from titles with partial functionality issues and games that need original Switch controllers for particular features. Check Nintendo’s live Switch 2 game compatibility resource for a specific title before buying or relying on it.
How to find which Switch games have compatibility issues
Nintendo’s compatibility resource is the best place to check a game’s current status. Nintendo cautions that Switch 2 hardware differs from the original system, so some Switch games may be unsupported or may not work fully. The company says future testing and updates may change support; its UK guidance notes that some games may take longer to become playable, have partial functionality issues, or remain unsupported.

Nintendo also publishes a document titled “Nintendo Switch games with start up issues on Nintendo Switch 2”. It lists titles, publishers, and handling notes, but it is specifically a list of start-up issues—not necessarily a complete roster of every game that cannot be played. Check the live resource for the status of any named game, since entries and handling notes can change.
What “not compatible” can mean
A compatibility problem does not always mean a game is permanently unplayable. Nintendo’s materials distinguish among several cases:
#1 Best Overall
- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
- Cannot start: the software may fail to launch on Switch 2.
- Gameplay or progress is blocked: a game may start but have a problem that prevents normal play.
- Partial functionality: the game may run while a feature or part of the experience does not work correctly.
- Controller limitation: a feature may require an original Switch Joy-Con, even though the console can run the game.
- Under investigation or update planned: Nintendo’s handling note describes the current response, not necessarily a permanent compatibility outcome.
For example, Nintendo’s issue document has included entries for Fortnite with a note that a Switch 2 version was planned, and Palia with a note that the issue was being investigated. Those are examples of handling notes, not assurances that the same statuses remain current; verify the game in Nintendo’s live resource.
Some games need original Switch Joy-Con for specific features
Controller requirements can be mistaken for console incompatibility. Nintendo’s Australia guidance identifies titles whose features need original Switch Joy-Con rather than the included Joy-Con 2:
Rank #2

| Game | Issue or requirement | What Nintendo says to use |
|---|---|---|
| Ring Fit Adventure | Joy-Con 2 attached to the Ring-Con cannot be used to play the game. | Attach original Nintendo Switch Joy-Con to the Ring-Con. |
| 1-2-Switch | The IR Motion Camera feature requires an original right Switch Joy-Con. | Connect the original right Joy-Con wirelessly. |
These are feature-specific controller limitations. Check Nintendo’s Australia compatibility guidance for its current details.

Nintendo says this message means the game being attempted is not compatible with Switch 2 and recommends playing it on a Nintendo Switch console. If it is a third-party game, Nintendo advises contacting the publisher for title-specific compatibility details. This error is different from a game that starts but has a problem with one feature or controller.

Check before you buy or upgrade
- Search for the exact game in Nintendo’s compatibility resource before buying a Switch game for Switch 2 or counting on an existing copy.
- Read the status and handling note closely: distinguish a launch problem from partial functionality, a controller requirement, or an issue under investigation.
- If the game is third-party and the status does not answer your question, ask its publisher about the specific game and edition.
- If an error says “This Software Can’t Be Played,” use a Nintendo Switch console for that title unless Nintendo’s compatibility information later changes.
