Leave the display’s OLED-care protections on and follow its manual for pixel-cleaning cycles. There is no reliable one-size-fits-all brightness, contrast, or shadow-control setting.
1. Confirm the refresh rate Windows is sending
A high refresh rate on the monitor’s box does not mean the PC is using it. In Windows, open Settings > System > Display > Advanced display, select the OLED monitor if you have more than one, and choose a refresh rate it supports. LG documents this path and notes that the attainable rate also depends on the monitor, connection, PC performance and environment: LG’s refresh-rate guidance.
If the rate you want is missing, check the exact monitor and graphics-card specifications, including the required port, resolution and connection standard. A cable can be a limiting factor, but not every OLED monitor needs a new one: LG lists DisplayPort 1.4 or HDMI 2.0 or higher as possible requirements depending on the model. Check the model’s specifications before replacing a cable.
2. Choose a gaming preset that suits the game
Try the monitor’s gaming preset first, then adjust only what you need. Presets can change the image or processing for different game types; they are not universal standards, and names and controls differ by model. LG’s examples include FPS1, FPS2 and RTS presets, as well as editable Gamer modes. Some LG game modes require Windows HDR to be enabled, so consult the instructions for your particular display rather than assuming those labels or requirements apply to every brand: LG’s game-mode guidance.

For a first pass, use the preset intended for your game or a user mode that leaves you in control. Compare changes in a scene you recognize; a preset that makes targets easier to see may not preserve the look intended by the game.
3. Enable HDR for supported HDR content
Turn on HDR in Windows and in the monitor’s settings when you are playing HDR content with a supported monitor and PC configuration. For ordinary SDR desktop use, HDR is not automatically the better choice: behavior depends on Windows and the display’s implementation. LG’s manual warns that HDR content may not display correctly depending on Windows settings. Check the monitor manual and Windows HDR setting if an HDR game looks wrong.

HDR behavior can also interact with game presets. If enabling HDR changes which modes are available, or the picture looks unexpectedly different, check the monitor’s model-specific guidance and verify that Windows is set as intended. Do not assume a single HDR toggle or luminance value is right for every OLED.
4. Turn on VRR when the whole setup supports it
Enable the monitor’s Adaptive-Sync, FreeSync or G-SYNC-compatible option when your monitor and graphics card support the relevant technology. VRR adjusts display timing to the game’s output and is intended to reduce tearing or stutter. Names, compatibility and menu steps vary, so use the monitor’s own manual to enable it and confirm support for your specific model and GPU: LG’s owner’s manual and support information.

VRR and the selected refresh rate address different parts of the experience: choose the supported refresh rate in Windows, then use VRR if the display and graphics card are compatible.
5. Keep OLED-care protections enabled
Leave available screen-saving, screen-movement or pixel-shift, and logo-dimming protections enabled unless the manufacturer’s manual gives a model-specific reason to change them. Their names and availability vary. ASUS explains that prolonged display of static, high-contrast images can contribute to image persistence or burn-in and documents protective features for its covered models: ASUS OLED protection guidance and ASUS manuals and downloads.

When the monitor prompts you to run pixel cleaning, follow its instructions and let the cycle complete. For the ASUS monitors covered by its support guidance, the process takes approximately six minutes, may run when the screen turns off, and should not be interrupted by unplugging power. That timing and behavior are specific to those covered models, not a rule for every OLED: ASUS pixel-cleaning guidance.

Black Stabilizer and similar shadow controls can make dark areas easier to see, but raising them may make blacks look washed out or change the intended contrast. Start at the default and make modest adjustments in a representative game scene. If the image loses convincing black levels, return toward default. No single numeric setting is established for OLED monitors across models and games.

A practical starting checklist
- Pick the monitor’s gaming or user preset that fits the game.
- In Windows Advanced display, confirm the selected refresh rate.
- Enable VRR if both monitor and graphics card support it.
- Use HDR for supported HDR games and configurations; check Windows and monitor settings if the image is wrong.
- Keep OLED-care features enabled and follow the exact manual for cleaning prompts.
- Change shadow controls only to taste, and avoid treating any generic brightness, contrast or black-level numbers as universal.
