Open the pack variant whose card list includes the Pokémon or cards you want most. There is no universally best first pack: variants can contain different groups of cards, and the right choice depends on whether you are collecting a favorite or building toward a particular deck. Check the in-game card list and offering rates before you choose.
How to choose your first pack
- Pick a goal. Decide whether you want a favorite Pokémon, cards for a deck, or a particular missing card.
- Compare the available pack variants. On the pack selection screen, inspect the card list and offering rates. Pokémon’s collecting guide explains that variants can have different card groups; the artwork alone is not a reliable way to identify every card inside.
- Choose the variant that includes your target. If you are pursuing several cards, compare how many of your wanted cards appear in each variant. A card may be available in more than one.
Choose by what you want to collect
If you have a favorite Pokémon
Find it in the in-game card list and choose a variant that includes it. This gives you a clear collecting target, but it does not guarantee that a particular opening will contain that card.
If you are building a deck
List the key cards you are missing, then prioritize a variant whose offering list contains the most relevant targets. This is a way to focus your collection, not a promise of better pulls or a claim that one pack is strongest in the current metagame.
If you plan to use pack points
Opening packs earns points tied to that expansion, and those points can only be exchanged for cards from the same expansion. Keep opening within the expansion that contains your desired card if you want to build its points balance. Pokémon Support says pack points do not expire, so you can save them until you are ready to exchange them for a card that fills a meaningful gap. See Pokémon Support’s pack-points explanation.

What if you have no target yet?
Compare the card lists for the available variants and choose a set you would enjoy collecting. There is no evidence-based universal winner, and a fixed recommendation may not fit your collection or the cards currently available in your game. For example, Pokémon’s guide discusses different Genetic Apex variants; that is an illustration of how variants differ, not a recommendation that Genetic Apex is the best current choice.

The official Pokémon TCG Pocket site says players can open two booster packs per day at no cost. Treat this as the site’s stated product feature, not a permanent guarantee: game features can change. Pokémon describes the game as free to start with optional in-app purchases in its Support FAQ.
