On the two-paddle SCUF layout described in a Games Learning Society article dated September 2, 2023, Jump is mapped to the farthest-left paddle. That article lists the matching face buttons as X on PS4 and A on Xbox. Slide sits on the farthest-right paddle, mapped to O on PS4 and B on Xbox. Treat this as the described default, not a universal rule, because paddle layouts can be changed by the controller’s software or by the game.
The default paddle mapping
The 2023 article gives one default for a two-paddle setup. Both paddles sit on the rear of the controller, and their roles are assigned from left to right:

| Paddle position | Default function | PS4 face button equivalent | Xbox face button equivalent |
|---|---|---|---|
| Farthest left | Jump | X | A |
| Farthest right | Slide | O | B |
The article’s wording is that the farthest-left paddle is mapped to Jump and the farthest-right paddle is mapped to Slide by default. The face-button equivalents are the ones the paddle replicates, so a player who wants Jump on the rear input should expect it to act like X on PS4 or A on Xbox.
Why the default may not match your setup
A default mapping only applies when nothing has been changed. Three things can override it:

- SAVE AND SWITCH PROFILES — Save up to 3 custom profiles on the controller and switch between them on the fly with the dedicated Profile button. Even pick which color the XBOX button lights up as.
- Controller software. Most rear-paddle controllers store remapping in a companion app or profile. A profile saved by someone else, or one loaded on a different console, can reassign the paddles.
- Game bindings. A game may use its own button assignments, which can ignore the paddle layout or replace Jump with another action.
- Controller model. The article describes one SCUF layout with two paddles. Controllers with four paddles, or with paddles placed differently, may follow different defaults. The source does not establish how other models are labelled or mapped.
How to check and change the mapping
Work through these checks in order. Each step confirms whether the paddle is sending the input you expect.
- Open the controller’s companion software on the console or PC you use, and find the paddle or button mapping screen. Menu names differ by brand and version, so look for the section that lists rear inputs.
- Confirm that the farthest-left paddle is assigned to Jump (X on PS4, A on Xbox). If it is not, reassign it there.
- Save the change to the controller’s profile, not only to a temporary session, so the mapping survives a restart.
- Open the game’s control settings and confirm that Jump is bound to the face button the paddle sends. If the game binds Jump to a different button, the paddle will appear to do the wrong thing even though the controller is correct.
- In a safe area of the game, press the farthest-left paddle and watch for the jump animation. Then press the farthest-right paddle and confirm that Slide triggers.
Troubleshooting when the paddle does not jump
- The paddle does nothing. Check that the controller’s profile is active and that the paddle has not been reassigned to a different function.
- The paddle slides instead of jumping. The two paddles are probably swapped. Reassign them in the controller software.
- The paddle jumps but the game reads it differently. The game may bind Jump to a different button. Check the game’s own control settings.
- The mapping resets after a restart. The change was probably saved only to a session. Save it to the controller profile and test again.
What the source does and does not establish
The 2023 Games Learning Society article is a secondary gaming-advice piece, not a controller manual or an independent test. It establishes the default mapping for one two-paddle SCUF layout and the face-button equivalents listed above. It does not provide performance measurements, learning-time estimates, or a list of controller models with confirmed support. It also does not show that the mapping applies across other brands or games. Use the default as a starting point, and verify it on your own controller and game.

On the two-paddle SCUF layout described in that 2023 article, use the farthest-left paddle for Jump (X on PS4, A on Xbox). Confirm the mapping in your controller software and in the game’s bindings, because either can change it.
