What you can play on each PlayStation
God of War (2018)
The 2018 game was released for PS4. PlayStation’s franchise information also lists it on PC. On a PS5, you can play the PS4 release through the console’s PS4-game compatibility; the important buying distinction is that you do not need a separate PS5-only edition of this game to start the story.

God of War Ragnarök
Ragnarök is sold for both PS4 and PS5, and is also available on PC. The official US PlayStation Store listing describes a standard PS4/PS5 edition. A PS5 buyer can therefore select the PS5 edition, while an existing PS4 owner can play the PS4 edition without replacing the console.

That platform overlap is why a PS4 is still a legitimate choice for an existing owner. The reason to move to PS5 is access to the PS5 edition and its console-specific features, not a requirement to play the games at all.
Why PS5 is the default recommendation
A new buyer gets the broadest God of War path with a PS5: the PS4 release of the 2018 game, the PS5 edition of Ragnarök, and the option to use an eligible PS4 copy through the upgrade process. PlayStation’s Ragnarök page specifically describes PS5 features including DualSense haptic feedback, adaptive triggers and 3D Audio with stereo headphones.

Those are vendor-described capabilities, not independent measurements of frame rate, resolution or loading time. The practical conclusion is simply that PS5 is the platform with the current-generation edition and the associated controller and audio support. If you are purchasing a console rather than repurposing one you already own, that flexibility generally makes PS5 the safer long-term decision for this franchise.
Choosing between PS5 disc and digital configurations
Choose a PS5 with a disc drive when physical games matter
- You own PS4 game discs and want to keep using them.
- You may buy physical editions of Ragnarök or other games.
- You want to preserve the option of buying, borrowing or reselling discs.
- You may use an eligible PS4 disc to obtain the digital PS5 version of Ragnarök.
PlayStation’s stated condition is specific: “To upgrade eligible PS4™ disc copies, players need a PS5™ console with a disc drive.” “Eligible” matters; the statement does not say every disc qualifies. The drive also has to be present when the disc is used as the entitlement for the upgrade, so an all-digital PS5 is not a substitute for this purpose.
Choose a digital configuration when your library is digital
If your PS4 games were purchased digitally and you intend to keep buying digitally, a digital PS5 configuration can be reasonable. PlayStation says the digital PS4-to-digital-PS5 upgrade option is available for eligible digital PS4 games for an additional cost. Check the current regional terms and the exact game listing before paying; upgrade eligibility and pricing can vary by edition and market.
Do not select the digital model solely because it appears cheaper in an old comparison. The relevant figure is the current local console price plus the games you expect to buy, and the research for this article does not establish a current regional price.

How the PS4-to-PS5 upgrade works for Ragnarök
PlayStation’s FAQ states: “Yes, God of War Ragnarök will offer a digital upgrade* option from a disc or digital PS4 game to the digital PS5 version for an additional cost.” The upgrade is therefore not a free, automatic conversion of every copy.
- Identify your PS4 edition. Confirm that the copy is an eligible PS4 disc or digital version. The official listing and your regional store page are the authoritative places to check.
- Match the console to the copy. For an eligible physical disc, use a PS5 with a disc drive. A digital PS5 cannot validate a disc entitlement.
- Open the game’s PlayStation Store page on your account. Look for the PS5 upgrade option associated with your PS4 purchase. The displayed charge is an additional cost, not a promise of a free upgrade.
- Review the regional conditions before confirming. Check the edition, account region and any restrictions shown on the store page. Do not assume that a second-hand disc, special edition or imported copy has the same eligibility.
- Download the digital PS5 version. For a disc entitlement, keep the qualifying disc available for the console’s ownership check as required by PlayStation’s terms. The upgrade produces a digital PS5 version rather than converting the disc into a PS5 disc.
If you have not bought the PS4 game yet, compare the complete cost of the PS4 edition plus the upgrade with the current price of the PS5 edition. The better value depends on your local store, promotion and edition; no general price advantage is established here.
When keeping or buying a PS4 makes sense
You already own a PS4
Keeping your PS4 is the lowest-friction choice if your goal is to play the two main games and you do not specifically need the PS5 edition. Both God of War (2018) and Ragnarök are listed for PS4. You can start with the 2018 game and play Ragnarök on the same console without buying new hardware.
You are buying used and the condition is good
A used PS4 can be sensible when the console and game prices in your area are substantially lower than a PS5. Inspect the actual console condition, controller condition, storage situation and included cables. Where PS5 Pro fits
PlayStation currently labels God of War Ragnarök “PS5 Pro Enhanced.” That label establishes compatibility with PS5 Pro enhancements, but the official materials reviewed do not provide a model-to-model performance table or quantify specific resolution, frame-rate or visual gains against a standard PS5.
For that reason, PS5 Pro should be treated as an enthusiast option. PS5 features, display and audio requirements
The official Ragnarök page highlights DualSense haptic feedback and adaptive triggers on PS5. These features require the PS5 edition and a compatible DualSense controller; an additional controller is not required to play the game. PlayStation also describes 3D Audio support with stereo headphones.

The page states that 4K resolution requires a compatible 4K TV or display. Buying a PS5 alone does not turn a non-4K screen into a 4K display. If your television is not compatible, evaluate the console on its game access and PS5 features rather than assuming a particular resolution output.
These descriptions come from PlayStation’s product information. They should not be read as a measured comparison of image quality or performance between PS4, standard PS5 and PS5 Pro, because no such comparative test figures are established here.
A practical decision process
- List the games you actually need. If the list is the 2018 game and Ragnarök, PS4 can cover both; PS5 adds access to the PS5 edition of Ragnarök.
- Classify your library. Mark each relevant game as physical or digital. One physical PS4 copy can change the console choice because an eligible disc upgrade requires a disc-drive PS5.
- Set the edition target. Decide whether “I can play it” is enough, or whether you specifically want the PS5 edition and its DualSense, adaptive-trigger and 3D Audio features.
- Check your screen and headphones. A compatible 4K display is required for 4K output, while stereo headphones are the equipment PlayStation cites for 3D Audio.
- Price the complete package locally. Include the console, required game edition, any upgrade charge and the condition of used hardware. Store prices are regional and time-sensitive.
- Consider PS5 Pro last. Check the current premium only after deciding that standard PS5 is not sufficient; “PS5 Pro Enhanced” does not by itself provide a quantified value calculation.
