For step credit while Pokémon GO is closed, turn on Adventure Sync, allow background location access, and connect Apple Health or Google Fit. For battery, use the game’s own Battery Saver to switch off the display during play; don’t confuse it with your phone’s battery-saving mode, which can interrupt background tracking.
Which settings let Adventure Sync count steps?
Adventure Sync is optional and works when Pokémon GO is not open. It is available from Trainer Level 5. Set it up in the game, then check that your phone and health app allow activity to be recorded in the background.

- Turn on Adventure Sync: In Pokémon GO, open Main Menu > Settings > General > Adventure Sync and enable it. Follow the prompts to grant access to Apple Health or Google Fit. See the Adventure Sync help guide.
- Allow background location access: Pokémon GO needs location permission while it is closed. On iOS, the support guide specifies Always. Android labels and menu paths vary by device and operating-system version, so check the app’s location permission in your phone settings. Make sure Location Services are on.
- Confirm the health-app connection: Open Apple Health or Google Fit and verify it is recording activity and connected to Pokémon GO. Apple users can check Health > Sources. Pokémon Support gives this Google Fit path: Settings > Google > Google Fit > Connected apps and devices. Which Battery Saver setting should you use?
Pokémon GO has an in-game Battery Saver option, distinct from your phone’s system-level battery-saving mode.

Niantic’s troubleshooting guidance advises disabling device and health-app battery-saving modes when they interfere with Adventure Sync. The sources do not establish a fixed battery-life improvement or percentage for either setting. Google Fit’s general battery advice includes turning off activity detection while you are not moving, using Wi-Fi, lowering screen brightness, closing other background apps, and removing unused apps; it does not quantify a Pokémon GO-specific gain. What to check if Adventure Sync is not tracking progress
- Make sure Adventure Sync is still enabled in Pokémon GO.
- Check that Pokémon GO has background location permission and that Location Services are on.
- Confirm Apple Health or Google Fit is recording activity and shows Pokémon GO as connected.
- Disable phone or health-app power-saving modes if they are preventing sensors or background activity from running.
- Wait for the health-app data to sync. Pokémon GO support says transfer can take several hours; restarting the game may help.
- Do not rely on manually entered fitness data: it does not count toward Adventure Sync.
