To configure controls for a racing game on Steam Deck, open the game’s Library page, select its gamepad icon, and edit or choose a controller layout. Start with analog stick steering and analog triggers for acceleration and braking if the game supports them, then test every input in the game. The best settings depend on the game and its Steam Input implementation.
Open the game’s control settings
- In your Steam Deck Library, highlight the racing game and open its details page.
- Select the gamepad icon to open the game’s control settings. Steam Support says this screen shows the current layout and lets you edit it or browse community configurations from the current template with R1. See Steam’s Steam Deck Basic Use & Troubleshooting Guide.
- Begin with the current layout or choose a relevant community layout, then review its bindings before making changes. Treat community layouts as starting points: they may not match your preferences or the game’s current version.
Set up steering, throttle, and brake
For a conventional controller-style setup, try steering with an analog stick and acceleration and braking with the analog triggers, where the game exposes those inputs. The Deck’s sticks and triggers are analog input components, but this is a practical starting point rather than a universal preset. Valve’s documentation describes the available Steam Input sources.
Inspect the layout editor to see what the game actually accepts. Depending on how the game implements Steam Input, bindings may use developer-defined game actions, or Steam Input may map physical controls to gamepad, keyboard, or mouse inputs. That difference can change the choices and labels available to you. Valve explains these modes in Getting Started for Players.
Test and adjust the layout in the game
- Start a low-stakes session, such as a practice area or an early race.
- Check steering in both directions, throttle, brake, camera controls, and menu navigation.
- If something feels wrong, return to the game’s control settings and inspect the affected binding. Adjust it only after confirming which input the game expects.
- Check the game’s own controller options as well. Sensitivity, dead zones, steering assists, and trigger behavior vary by game, so there is no single setting to recommend without knowing the title and its options.
Troubleshoot an input that does not register
First test whether the Deck detects the physical control: open Steam > Settings > Controller > Test Controller Inputs, the path given by Steam Support in its troubleshooting guide.

- The test does not show the input: The issue is at the controller-input level rather than just the game’s binding. Use the test screen to check the control itself.
- The test shows the input, but the game ignores it: Recheck the game’s active layout and its in-game controller options. The game’s input implementation determines how Steam Input bindings are presented, and game-specific behavior cannot be diagnosed without the title.
- The input works, but feels imprecise: Review the relevant layout and in-game options, then test one change at a time. Exact sensitivity and dead-zone values cannot be generalized across racing games.
Should you use gyro or the trackpads to steer?
They are optional alternatives to try, not default recommendations. Compare them with stick steering for precision, holding a steady line, comfort over a full race, compatibility with the game’s input mode, and whether they work alongside your other bindings. Valve’s Steam Deck FAQ cautions that suitability depends on the game and intended controls: “This depends on what your game is and what sort of controls you’re aiming for.” See the Steam Deck FAQ.
