PS5SX2 can reportedly run physical DVD-format PS2 games from a jailbroken PS5’s internal optical drive or a compatible external USB optical drive, including discs from different regions. Standard CD-format PS2 games are the important exception: the PS5 drive cannot read them. If you do not use a physical disc, PS5SX2 lists ISO, CHD, CSO and ZSO files as supported alternatives. All of this is unofficial homebrew, and compatibility remains game- and setup-dependent.

Which physical PS2 discs can the PS5 read?
DVD-format PS2 games
DVD-based PS2 game discs are the physical format reported to work with PS5SX2. The report covers both a PS5 with its internal optical drive and a USB-connected optical drive. The important wording is “reported”: PS5SX2 is an independent homebrew port, so a disc being readable does not mean Sony has added PS2 support to the PS5 operating system.

A DVD game should be inserted only after the homebrew components are running and the emulator is ready to mount or access the drive, following the project’s current instructions. The evidence does not establish a specific drive model list, a guaranteed read speed, or identical behavior on every PS5 revision. An external drive may therefore be useful, but its compatibility still has to be established in your own setup.
CD-format PS2 games
CD-based PS2 games are not readable through the PS5 drive in this arrangement. The reported reason is hardware-level: the PS5 optical drive cannot read standard CDs. Sony’s official PS5 media documentation also lists CD among unsupported media. That official page describes supported playback media; it does not authorize PS2 emulation or promise that a DVD readable by the drive will function as a PS2 game.

This distinction matters because some PS2 titles were released on CD rather than DVD. A CD game that works in an original PS2, or in an emulator on a computer with a suitable drive, does not become compatible with the PS5’s optical drive merely because PS5SX2 is installed. Use a supported image file instead if you have a lawful dump and the project’s current build accepts it.
Built-in drive versus USB optical drive
Current reporting names both drive arrangements, but it does not provide a validated list of USB DVD-drive models. Do not assume that every bus-powered drive, optical enclosure or USB adapter will behave identically. A drive can be mechanically able to read DVDs yet still fail to present the disc correctly to the homebrew stack.
For that reason, treat an external drive as an option rather than a guaranteed upgrade. If the internal drive reads a known-good DVD game, that is a useful baseline. If a USB drive is needed, verify that the PS5 recognizes it and that PS5SX2’s current documentation supports the connection method before buying hardware.

Do PS2 discs from other regions work?
Recent coverage says PS5SX2 can run PS2 discs from all regions. That is a broader behavior than the original, region-separated PS2 console experience, but the strength of the evidence is different from the format information: the all-region statement comes from secondary reporting, while the PS5SX2 project README does not make its own region claim.
Use “reported to work across regions,” not “every regional disc is guaranteed.” Region behavior can still be affected by the specific game, the emulator build, the disc read, BIOS configuration and other compatibility issues. If a foreign-region DVD fails, first establish whether the drive and title work at all with a known-good disc before treating the region as the cause.
File-based alternatives to a physical disc
PS5SX2 lists four game-image formats: ISO, CHD, CSO and ZSO. These are stored files representing game media; they are not CD or DVD formats and do not bypass the requirement for a correctly configured homebrew environment.

- CHD: a compressed optical-disc image format.
- CSO: a compressed ISO-style image.
- ZSO: another compressed image format listed by the project.
The project requires users to supply their own games and does not bundle game files, BIOS files or keys. PCSX2’s general documentation likewise discusses using original discs or user-dumped ISO/CSO images, but advice about disc-drive speed on a computer should not be treated as a measured claim about PS5SX2. Follow the PS5SX2 documentation for the format and build you are actually using.

- A PS5 that is already jailbroken with a firmware and method supported by your setup. Installing PS5SX2 does not itself jailbreak a console.
- The PS5SX2 Helper payload loaded with kstuff, as specified by the project.
- ShadowMountPlus, which the project lists among the required mounting components.
- Your own PS2 BIOS dump.
- Your own PS2 game discs or legally created image files.
- For physical games, either the internal optical drive or a USB optical drive that works with your particular console and software build.
The README says development was done on a PS5 Pro running firmware 11.40. It also reports testing on other PS5 models, including a Slim, across firmware 6.02 through 12.70. Those figures describe project-reported test coverage, not a promise that every firmware in that range can currently be jailbroken, nor that a current retail console will accept the same exploit or payload.
Typical setup sequence
The exact menus and payload delivery method can change between homebrew releases. The sequence below reflects the components the project names; use the release documentation for the precise files and commands for your build.

- Confirm the platform first. Check your PS5 model, installed firmware and jailbreak method against current project notes. If the console cannot be jailbroken by a supported method, PS5SX2 cannot be used.
- Load the helper payload. Start the PS5SX2 Helper through the kstuff-based payload process required by the project. A successful load should leave the helper available to the emulator rather than merely copying files to storage.
- Start the mounting component. Run ShadowMountPlus as documented. If it is not active, a disc or image may not be exposed to PS5SX2 even when the drive itself is working.
- Provide a compatible BIOS. Point PS5SX2 to your own PS2 BIOS dump. The project does not supply one, and an emulator installation without a valid BIOS cannot be assumed to boot games.
- Choose the game source. Insert a DVD-format PS2 game, connect the tested USB DVD drive, or select an ISO, CHD, CSO or ZSO file. A CD-format disc is not a viable physical source through the PS5 drive.
- Launch and test one title. Begin with a known-good DVD or image and record whether it mounts, boots and remains playable. Testing one variable at a time makes it easier to separate a media problem from a BIOS, mount or game-compatibility problem.
Compatibility is not the same as disc readability
A readable DVD only proves that the optical path and mount process can access that media. It does not establish that a particular game will boot correctly, render properly, maintain audio, save reliably or run at full speed. The PS5SX2 project describes itself as an ongoing passion project and explicitly warns users to “Expect rough edges.” Work toward compatibility with the full PS2 library is continuing.
No compatibility percentage or library-wide success rate is established here. Results can differ by game, PS5 model, firmware, emulator revision, BIOS and storage method. A title that fails from a physical disc may also fail from an image if the underlying emulator support is incomplete; conversely, an image can help isolate a marginal optical read from an emulation problem.
Official PS5 media support versus PS5SX2 homebrew
Sony’s media-support information is useful for understanding the CD limitation: it lists DVD and Blu-ray media that the console can handle and identifies CD as unsupported. It is not a PS2-emulation compatibility list. PS5SX2 is an independent homebrew project running on a jailbroken console, outside the normal supported software path.

That distinction affects expectations and troubleshooting. An official system update can change exploit availability or homebrew behavior, and Sony’s supported-media page cannot be used to infer that a PS2 DVD game is officially supported. Keep the console’s firmware, jailbreak status and PS5SX2 build aligned with the project documentation before changing any component.
Troubleshooting by symptom

Bottom line for choosing your game source
For physical media, choose a DVD-format PS2 game; that is the disc type recently reported to work, whether read internally or through a compatible USB optical drive. Do not expect a CD-format PS2 game to read through the PS5 drive. Discs from other regions are reportedly usable, but that claim is less firmly documented than the format distinction. If you want to avoid optical-drive variables, PS5SX2’s listed ISO, CHD, CSO and ZSO formats provide file-based alternatives, provided you supply your own BIOS and game dumps and accept the project’s unfinished, title-by-title compatibility.
