Four numbered Resident Evil games have remakes: the original Resident Evil (remade in 2002), Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 3, and Resident Evil 4. Capcom’s modern bundle, the Resident Evil Remake Trilogy, contains only RE2, RE3, and RE4, so the first game is often left out of the conversation even though it has a remake too.

The numbered games and what each one remakes

Capcom’s official Resident Evil history identifies the remakes of the first three games directly, and lists RE4 among the remake titles in its bundle. The table below shows what each remake replaces.

Remake Game it remakes Notes from Capcom’s official pages
Resident Evil (2002) The original Resident Evil Capcom’s history page uses an image from the remake version released in 2002. A later HD-branded edition, Resident Evil HD Remaster, is listed in Capcom’s catalog.
Resident Evil 2 Resident Evil 2, released January 1998 Capcom describes the current RE2 as the remake of the original game.
Resident Evil 3 Resident Evil 3: Nemesis, released September 1999 Capcom describes RE3 as the remake of Nemesis.
Resident Evil 4 The earlier Resident Evil 4 Included among the three remakes in Capcom’s Remake Trilogy. The Capcom pages consulted do not state the release dates of the modern RE2, RE3, or RE4 remakes, so check the store listing for those.

Why the original Resident Evil gets left out

The 2002 Resident Evil is a remake, but it sits outside Capcom’s current grouping. When Capcom packaged its modern remakes, it chose RE2, RE3, and RE4. That is why searches for “remake” often turn up three games in the bundle and four in the full list.

Resident Evil HD Remaster is a later HD-branded catalog name tied to that first remake. It is not a separate story remake, so it should not be counted as an additional game in the list above. The Capcom pages consulted do not give a complete record of every port or re-release, so treat HD Remaster as an edition name rather than a full version history.

Resident Evil Remake Trilogy: what is in the bundle

Capcom announced the Resident Evil Remake Trilogy as a digital bundle on November 22, 2024. Its listed platforms are:

  • PlayStation 5
  • PlayStation 4
  • Xbox Series X|S
  • Xbox One
  • PC (Steam)

The bundle includes:

  • Resident Evil 2 Deluxe Edition
  • Resident Evil 3
  • Resident Evil 3 Classic Costume Pack
  • Resident Evil Resistance
  • Resident Evil 4 Gold Edition
  • The Mercenaries

Resistance and The Mercenaries are extras rather than remakes of earlier story games. Capcom says each item can also be bought on its own. The Gold Edition of RE4 included in the bundle is not compatible with Xbox One, so an Xbox One buyer should check whether the bundle or a separate listing fits their console before purchasing.

How to choose between the bundle and single games

  1. Decide which remake you mean. If you want the 2002 game, you need the first remake; the trilogy does not include it.
  2. Match the platform first. Confirm your console or PC appears in the store listing, and check the Xbox One restriction on RE4 Gold Edition.
  3. Compare the extras. If you only want one story game, a single-title listing avoids paying for Resistance, The Mercenaries, or the costume pack.
  4. Check the live price. Prices, edition names, and availability for the bundle and individual titles change over time. Capcom’s November 2024 announcement describes what was included then, not the current storefront price.

Common questions about the remakes

  • Is the first Resident Evil a remake? Yes. Capcom’s official history identifies its image as from the 2002 remake of the original game.
  • Is Resident Evil HD Remaster a new game? No. It is a later HD-branded edition of the 2002 remake.
  • Which Resident Evil games have been remade? The original Resident Evil, RE2, RE3, and RE4, based on Capcom’s official pages.
