Start with the low-risk sequence that ASUS documents: install updates, select a built-in operating mode, enable Real-Time Monitor, and then change one game or battery setting at a time. Use Performance as the normal starting point, Silent for longer unplugged sessions, and Turbo when frame rate matters most—particularly while connected to wall power.
The first four changes to make
1. Install every available update
Updates should come before performance tuning because a graphics-driver update can include optimizations for recently released games. Press the Command Center button, open Armoury Crate SE, choose Settings, and open Update Center. Check each item listed there and restart if Armoury Crate requests it.

Also allow Windows Update to finish and open the Xbox app to check for any prompt or automatic update. Armoury Crate, Windows and the Xbox app can receive updates independently, so completing only one of those checks can leave the system on mixed versions. ASUS notes that menu names can change after updates; if an item moves, search Armoury Crate SE’s Settings pages rather than assuming the feature was removed.
2. Choose a built-in operating mode
Open Command Center and select Operating Mode. For a first run, use one of ASUS’s presets instead of Manual Mode. Presets apply tested power and fan behavior without requiring you to understand the APU’s time-based power limits.

| Mode | Best starting use | What it prioritizes | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Silent | Unplugged play, lighter games, quiet rooms | Lower power draw and fan noise | Lower performance headroom can reduce frame rate in demanding games |
| Performance | Everyday play and a balanced first test | A middle ground between performance and battery life | More heat, noise and battery use than Silent |
| Turbo | Highest frame-rate target, especially when plugged in | Maximum available power | Highest power use, heat and fan noise; the battery drains faster when unplugged |
ASUS describes the choice this way: “Performance mode offers more of a balance between performance and battery life, while the full-power Turbo mode delivers maximum power for the best possible framerates.” That is a vendor description, not an independent benchmark. A wall connection can provide additional power in Turbo on the ROG Xbox Ally X, so Turbo is generally more practical at a desk than on battery.
3. Turn on Real-Time Monitor
Open Command Center and tap Real-Time Monitor. Start a game and watch the overlay rather than relying on how a preset feels. It can display FPS, CPU and GPU utilization, temperature and battery level. The monitor does not improve performance itself; it tells you which change actually affected the system.
Use the overlay for a short, repeatable test: load the same save or scene, walk through the same busy area, and observe frame rate, temperature and battery behavior for several minutes. If FPS is already at your target and the GPU is not saturated, lowering graphics settings may only make the image worse. If temperature or fan noise is the problem, a power or frame-rate limit is usually more appropriate than a quality reduction.

4. Tune one game before changing the whole device
After the first three steps, adjust the game’s own graphics menu. Change one option, replay the same scene, and compare both motion and image clarity. Global changes can hide which setting helped and can make a well-performing game look worse.
How to select a frame-rate and image-quality strategy
Start with the game’s preset, then target the expensive options
If the frame rate is below your target, reduce settings that commonly require substantial GPU work, such as output resolution, shadows, volumetric effects, reflections and crowd density. The exact names differ by game. Lowering every option at once makes it difficult to identify the real bottleneck, so begin with one demanding category and check the monitor again.
A lower, stable frame rate can look better than a high but erratic counter. Set a cap in the game’s graphics menu or through Command Center > FPS Limit when available. Choose a cap you can sustain in the game’s busiest scenes, not the number shown in an empty corridor. A lower cap can reduce power use and fan activity, but it also means fewer frames.

FSR versus RSR
| Option | Where you enable it | When to try it | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| FSR | The individual game’s graphics menu | The game supports AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution | FPS gain, fine-detail clarity, shimmering and motion stability |
| RSR | ROG/graphics-driver controls, with the game rendering below native resolution | The game lacks FSR but can run at a lower in-game resolution | Whether the upscaled image remains readable and free of distracting artifacts |
FSR is integrated by the developer, while RSR operates as a driver-level alternative. They are not universal image-quality wins. Test the same scene with each option, and keep the one that reaches your frame-rate goal without making text, foliage or moving edges noticeably worse.
Battery-focused settings that are safe to test
There is no single battery profile that fits every game. Make one change, note the Real-Time Monitor readings, and keep it only if the efficiency gain is worth the visual or performance compromise.
- Switch to Silent or Performance. Silent is the first battery experiment; Performance is useful when Silent cannot hold the desired frame rate.
- Set a sensible FPS cap. If a game renders more frames than the display or your target requires, lower the cap in the game or via Command Center.
- Reduce display brightness. Use the Command Center brightness slider, especially indoors.
- Disable RGB lighting. Turn off lighting effects when they add no value during play.
- Consider disabling CPU Boost. In Armoury Crate SE, go to Settings > Performance > Eco Assist and turn CPU Boost off. ASUS cautions that demanding games can lose performance; the trade-off is more attractive in lighter games where the CPU is not the limiting component.
- Recheck temperature and frame pacing. Keep the change only if the game remains smooth and the reduced power draw is visible in the monitor.
ASUS’s product page lists “up to 2X battery life,” but that figure is tied to a specific manufacturer comparison: Hollow Knight: Silksong at 720p, a 60 FPS limit, low graphics and Silent mode, comparing the ROG Xbox Ally X (RC73XA, Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme, 80 Wh) with the ROG Ally X (RC72LA, Ryzen Z1 Extreme, 80 Wh). It is not a promise that every game or setting will double runtime. The ROG Xbox Ally X is listed with an 80 Wh battery.

When Manual Mode is worth using
Manual Mode belongs after you have identified a specific limitation. It exposes APU power and fan controls, and those controls behave differently over multiple time windows and between plugged-in and unplugged profiles. A change that is stable on wall power may be unsuitable on battery.
- Use it when a particular game needs a small power adjustment that the three presets cannot provide.
- Change one limit at a time and watch temperature, sustained FPS and fan speed in Real-Time Monitor.
- Keep a known-good preset available so you can revert immediately if a game stutters, overheats or drains the battery too quickly.
- Do not raise power limits simply because a benchmark number looks higher; sustained frame pacing and acceptable noise matter more during play.
What to do when a setting does not help
FPS is low in every game
- Confirm that Windows, Armoury Crate SE and the Xbox app are up to date.
- Check that the device is not in Silent mode unintentionally.
- Use Real-Time Monitor to see whether GPU utilization is high. If it is, reduce resolution or demanding visual effects and test FSR or RSR where appropriate.
- If utilization is low but the frame rate remains poor, check for a frame cap, background downloads or a CPU-limited scene before lowering image quality further.
Performance is acceptable but the fan is too loud
Try Performance instead of Turbo, then add an FPS cap that matches the display or your chosen target. Keeping a steady cap usually addresses unnecessary rendering better than repeatedly switching modes. If the game still runs hot, Silent is the next test, provided it can maintain smooth frame pacing.

Verify the operating mode, cap the frame rate, lower brightness and disable RGB lighting. CPU Boost can be turned off through Eco Assist for easier-running games. Do not infer a universal runtime from a single session: game workload, brightness, wireless activity and temperature all change consumption.

The image looks soft after upscaling
Compare native resolution, FSR and RSR in the same scene. Check the game’s render scale and sharpening controls, and inspect text and fine edges while moving. If clarity is unacceptable, use a lower but native-resolution preset or reduce a different expensive effect instead.
Getting to Windows and managing other launchers
The Xbox full-screen interface is sufficient for many routine tasks, but advanced Windows settings and some launcher maintenance require the desktop. Swipe up from the bottom to open Task Switcher, then choose Windows Desktop. To return, use the Xbox app’s Xbox Full Screen control. ASUS says a restart is needed to return with background processes closed; you can also re-enter without those optimizations when you need to switch quickly.
Windows supports games from Steam, Epic Games and Battle.net, and ASUS says most Xbox Play Anywhere titles should support cloud saves and synchronization. Cloud or remote streaming can reduce local rendering load and may save battery, but the result depends on network quality and whether the service is available for the game and account. Treat streaming as a separate option, not a guaranteed battery setting.

You do not need accessories to change any setting in this guide. If you want an external monitor with a keyboard and mouse, ASUS recommends the ROG Bulwark Dock (2025) DG300 or another dock rated for 130 W. For additional game storage, the device can use a standard M.2 2280 PCIe Gen4 SSD; verify fit, installation requirements and the current listing before buying. Neither accessory increases performance by itself.
A practical first-session checklist
- Finish Armoury Crate SE, Windows and Xbox app updates.
- Select Performance for a balanced baseline, Silent for an unplugged efficiency test or Turbo for a plugged-in frame-rate test.
- Enable Real-Time Monitor and record FPS, temperature, utilization and battery level in a repeatable game scene.
- Set an FPS cap and adjust one demanding graphics option if the baseline misses your target.
- Use game-supported FSR first; evaluate RSR only when the game lacks FSR and can render below native resolution.
- For battery life, lower brightness, disable RGB and consider CPU Boost off after confirming the game remains smooth.
- Leave Manual Mode until a measured problem remains after these simpler changes.
The correct starting profile is the one that meets your game’s frame-rate target at an acceptable noise, temperature and battery cost. ASUS’s official guidance provides sensible presets and menu paths, but it does not establish one universal best setting for every title.
