Start with comfort and visibility, then tune FOV, camera response, controls and readability for your game, platform and input device. Change one setting at a time and test it in a safe area before settling on it.
1. Reduce camera effects that hurt comfort or combat tracking
Check for motion blur, camera shake, bobbing or sway, and stabilization options. Turn down or disable only the effects that make you uncomfortable or make it harder to follow enemies. Xbox Accessibility Guideline 117 recommends that games avoid effects such as camera shake, camera bobbing and motion blur, or offer an option to turn them off: Microsoft Learn: Xbox Accessibility Guideline 117.
Stabilization can be a trade-off rather than a free improvement. Bethesda’s Indiana Jones accessibility guide notes that it may reduce discomfort while also reducing combat animation. The exact behavior and menu labels vary by game: Bethesda: Indiana Jones accessibility options.
2. Adjust FOV only if the game offers it
Field of view (FOV) changes how much of the scene appears at once. Increase it a little if you need more peripheral visibility, then check for edge distortion or a fishbowl effect and any performance cost. A narrower view may feel more comfortable to some players and reduce distortion, but it shows less of the surroundings. Bethesda describes these trade-offs for Indiana Jones; they do not establish one best FOV for other games.

Make small changes and judge both enemy visibility and comfort during movement and combat. Graphics options can also depend on the platform and display: Bethesda’s Oblivion Remastered support page notes that some graphics settings are limited by platform, monitor and graphics card: Bethesda: Oblivion Remastered graphics settings.
3. Tune camera sensitivity with your actual input device
Do not copy a sensitivity value from another game or player without testing it. Controller sticks, mouse input and individual games can respond differently, and settings may interact. For example, the community-made Elden Ring First Person Souls mod documents its own camera FOV and sensitivity controls and notes that camera sensitivity is also affected by the game’s input sensitivity setting. It is a mod, not an official FromSoftware feature: Elden Ring First Person Souls mod.

- Soulslike Video Game design.
- Lightweight, Classic fit, Double-needle sleeve and bottom hem
- Start from the game’s default camera or look sensitivity.
- Make a small change in one direction.
- Turn toward a stationary landmark, then track a moving target in a low-risk area.
- If you routinely overshoot, reduce sensitivity; if turning feels sluggish, increase it slightly.
- Keep the change only if both turning and target tracking feel controllable.
Repeat this test for each input device you use. A number that feels right on a mouse is not a dependable starting point for a controller, or vice versa.
4. Review controls and accessibility options
Before adapting to an uncomfortable default, check whether the game lets you remap actions or change repeated presses and holds to toggles. Also look for motion-reduction presets and other assistance options that fit your needs. Ubisoft’s Far Cry 6 accessibility overview documents examples of these features, but it does not mean every Soulslike offers them: Ubisoft: Far Cry 6 accessibility overview.

5. Make subtitles and the interface readable
Look for subtitle size, captions, subtitle backgrounds and UI font scaling. Increase text size or add a background if dialogue and interface text are difficult to read; options differ by title. Both Bethesda’s Indiana Jones guide and Ubisoft’s Far Cry 6 overview describe readability features such as subtitle or caption settings and interface scaling.

If the game provides a brightness calibration screen, follow its on-screen instructions instead of applying a generic number from another title or display. For example, Bethesda’s Oblivion Remastered instructions describe adjusting brightness until a symbol is barely visible. That guidance is specific to that game’s test, not a universal calibration rule.
