For a standard DualSense, Sony’s documented steps are to reset the controller, reconnect it by USB, update PS5 system software, and contact PlayStation Repairs if the problem persists. Dead-zone controls are documented for the DualSense Edge, not as a general calibration menu for the standard DualSense.
What stick drift is—and what a dead zone changes
Stick drift is unwanted analog input when you are not moving the stick. A dead zone is a setting that determines how much small stick movement a game or controller will ignore before registering input. Adjusting a dead zone can reduce the effect of slight input, but it does not show that a worn or faulty controller sensor has been repaired.
Check whether the issue is limited to one game
- Try another game and the PS5 interface. Note whether the unwanted movement appears in both places. This is a practical diagnostic check, not a definitive test published by Sony.
- If it happens only in one game, inspect that game’s controls. Look for its dead-zone, stick sensitivity, or input settings and adjust them cautiously. Menu names and available settings vary by game.
If the same stick input appears across games or in the console interface, proceed with the controller troubleshooting steps rather than assuming a game setting is the cause.
Reset a standard DualSense controller
Sony’s reset instructions are to power down the PS5, disconnect the controller from the official USB cable, press the small reset button on the back beside the Sony logo for at least five seconds with a pin or similar tool, then reconnect the controller by USB and press the PS button. Follow Sony’s DualSense troubleshooting instructions for the current steps.

Update the PS5 and escalate persistent drift
If resetting does not resolve the problem and the console is operable, install the latest available PS5 system software. Sony recommends updating after reset when controller issues remain. If the analog-stick problem continues, use the analog-stick issue route in PlayStation support or go to PlayStation Repairs.
Sony’s cited instructions establish reset, system update, and support escalation; they do not establish that compressed air, contact cleaner, opening the controller, or an unofficial calibration tool will fix the fault. Avoid treating those as guaranteed repairs.

DualSense Edge: adjust dead zones or replace a module
The DualSense Edge has custom profiles with stick sensitivity and dead-zone controls. Sony documents these as ways to personalize controller behavior, not as a repair for underlying hardware damage. See Sony’s DualSense Edge profile instructions.
If an Edge stick does not work properly, Sony’s manual says its stick module can be replaced with a separately sold DualSense Edge module; the left and right modules are interchangeable. This is an Edge-specific option: do not assume the module fits the standard DualSense. Before handling it, the manual advises discharging static by touching grounded metal and avoiding the module and controller connectors. Consult the official DualSense Edge instruction manual for the model’s handling and replacement directions.

When to seek service, use warranty, or replace
For a standard DualSense, the official instructions reviewed document reset, software update, and service escalation, but not a user-replaceable stick module. If drift remains after those steps, check service options and warranty coverage for your controller’s model and country before paying for repair or buying another controller. Compare the total service cost with replacement cost; no universal repair price or cost advantage is established here.
Warranty terms depend on region and product version. For example, Sony Interactive Entertainment LLC’s CFI-ZCT2W manual states a one-year limited warranty for the original purchaser in the United States and Canada for material or workmanship defects, subject to proof of purchase and the manual’s other terms. That figure is not a worldwide warranty promise. Check the applicable manual and local Sony support for your controller.
