1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteStart with the Steam Machine’s 1080p default. Valve uses 1080p for Steam Machine Verified testing and labels it Default in the display-resolution menu, making it the sensible reference point for a new game. Change resolution only when your display, the game, or your preferred balance of sharpness and smoothness gives you a reason. Then tune that game’s own graphics options for a specific goal; Valve does not publish a universal order for ray tracing, shadows, anti-aliasing, upscaling, or other game-level settings.
The short answer: begin at 1080p, then tune per game
Steam Machine has two separate places where resolution can be controlled. The system-wide choice is in Settings > Display. A game can also expose its own resolution control in its graphics or video menu. Those scopes are not interchangeable: the global value establishes the display environment, while the in-game value determines what that particular title renders.

Leave the system at 1080p unless you have a clear reason to use another output. Valve Support describes 1080p as the system default game resolution, labeled Default in the Display dropdown, and says it is the resolution used for Steam Machine Verified testing. That makes it a supported starting point, not a guarantee that every game, television, monitor, or player will prefer it.
After confirming resolution, decide what you are trying to improve. A sharper picture, steadier motion, fewer distracting effects, or correct HDR presentation can require different changes. Valve’s guidance explicitly says picture-quality choices depend on the Steam Machine settings, connected display, and individual game. It does not rank individual options across all games, so any sequence for those options should be treated as a practical, game-specific method rather than official Valve guidance.

Step 1: Check the global display resolution
Use the system setting as your reference
- Open Settings on Steam Machine.
- Select Display.
- Find the resolution control. The 1080p system default is labeled Default in the Display dropdown.
- Keep that value if the picture is correctly framed and the game is performing acceptably.
- If you choose another value, apply it and inspect the desktop and a game before changing additional settings.
This setting is the right place to correct an output mismatch that affects multiple games. For example, if the connected screen is showing an unsuitable mode, changing the system display value gives you a consistent starting point. It does not replace the game’s own rendering-resolution control, and a title may present its image differently from the desktop.
When a different global value is reasonable
- Your display requires a different mode. A connected screen may look better or behave more predictably at a mode other than the default.
- You are troubleshooting presentation. A system-level change can help determine whether the issue is shared by the display environment or confined to one title.
- You have a deliberate performance target. If a particular game needs a lower rendering workload, test its own resolution control first when available; changing the global value affects the broader environment.
Do not assume that selecting a higher number automatically improves every game. The display, the game’s scaling behavior, and the title’s own defaults all affect the result. Valve provides no cross-game benchmark that identifies a universally superior resolution.
Step 2: Check the game’s own resolution
Use per-game control for a single title
- Launch the game you want to tune.
- Open its graphics, video, or display settings.
- Locate the game-resolution or render-resolution entry.
- Start with the value that corresponds to the system’s 1080p default, unless the game or display gives you a specific reason to choose differently.
- Apply the change, then view the same scene or repeat the same short gameplay section.
Not every game labels resolution in the same way. Some distinguish output resolution from internal render resolution; others combine resolution with a scaling mode. Read the title’s own description before assuming two entries do the same thing. The important distinction is scope: a per-game change lets you solve one title’s image-quality or performance problem without changing every other game.

| Per game | The individual game’s graphics, video, or display menu | That title’s rendering and presentation | Tuning one game without disturbing the rest of your library |
After either change, verify the actual picture in the game. Valve warns that results vary with the connected display, Steam Machine settings, and the game’s defaults, so a menu value alone cannot tell you whether the image is correctly scaled or whether performance improved.

Step 3: Choose a goal before touching quality settings
Once resolution is settled, write down the problem in one sentence. “The image is too soft,” “motion is uneven,” “bright areas look wrong,” and “I want more detail” lead to different controls. Changing several options at once makes it difficult to identify which setting helped or caused a new artifact.
If image sharpness is the priority
Keep the game at the highest resolution that your display and the title handle comfortably, then inspect any internal-resolution or upscaling control the game provides. A scaler can trade some fine detail for a lower rendering workload; its names, modes, and quality differ by game. Compare a static area with thin lines, foliage, or distant geometry, because those reveal scaling and anti-aliasing differences more clearly than a close-up character.
If steadier performance is the priority
Test a lower in-game render resolution or a less demanding quality preset before making several unrelated changes. Lowering the number of pixels generally reduces the work required to draw a frame, but the amount of improvement depends on whether that title is limited by rendering, effects, simulation, or another subsystem. Steam Machine’s official material does not provide a frame-rate promise for a particular game or setting.
If you want maximum visual effects
Increase demanding effects one at a time and return to the same gameplay section after each change. Ray tracing, volumetric effects, reflections, shadows, and ambient-occlusion options can have very different costs from one engine to another. There is no Valve-published sequence that says which of these should always be changed first, so avoid presenting a generic order as a Steam Machine rule.

How to handle the major in-game options
The following is a decision framework, not a universal preset. Use the game’s own descriptions and test each change separately.
Render resolution and upscaling
These controls determine how much of the final image is rendered at native detail before it is displayed or reconstructed. Try them first when you are balancing clarity against smoothness because they affect the whole image. Check for shimmering, softness, or unstable fine detail after enabling an upscaling mode; a setting that improves motion in one title may look distracting in another.
Ray tracing and reflections
Use these when reflections, shadows, or lighting are the reason you are changing settings. They can be visually important in scenes designed around them, but they are not automatically the best first adjustment for every game. If performance is already acceptable, leave them at the game’s default and change another option only when you can identify a visible problem.

Shadow and lighting controls often change the appearance of contact areas, interiors, and distant objects. Compare a scene with several light sources and moving objects. Lowering them may reduce visual depth even when the game otherwise looks sharp, so use the smallest change that solves the performance issue.

Anti-aliasing
Anti-aliasing affects edge smoothness and can interact with a game’s upscaler. If diagonal lines, fences, or foliage look jagged, test the anti-aliasing choices after establishing your resolution. If the image becomes soft or ghosted, compare the game’s alternatives rather than assuming the highest label is best.
Textures and model detail
These settings change surface detail and object complexity rather than the output resolution. They are useful when surfaces look noticeably blurry or distant objects lack detail, but they may not address uneven motion if another part of the rendering pipeline is responsible. Change them only after you have identified that detail—not overall image size—is the problem.
Effects, foliage, and view distance
Particle effects, dense vegetation, crowds, and long view distances can dominate particular scenes. Use a repeatable location in the game to test them. A setting that looks harmless in a quiet room may matter much more during combat or in a crowded outdoor area, which is why a single menu screenshot cannot establish a universal best value.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
When to adjust HDR
Change HDR when the issue is range or tone on an HDR-capable display: highlights may be too dim, clipped, or otherwise unlike the game’s intended presentation. Confirm that the display itself is using the expected HDR mode, then make one adjustment and inspect both bright and dark areas. The support material identifies HDR as a display setting; it does not claim that enabling it increases game performance.
When to adjust SDR content brightness
Use SDR content brightness when standard-dynamic-range material appears too dark or too bright within an HDR display workflow. This is a presentation correction, not a frame-rate control. If only one game looks wrong, check that game’s brightness or HDR calibration as well as the system setting.
A disciplined test loop prevents bad conclusions
- Change one setting or one closely related group of settings.
- Load the same area, replay the same encounter, or use the same built-in benchmark if the game provides one.
- Check both the picture and motion. A sharper still image is not automatically a smoother game.
- Keep the change only if it solves your stated problem without creating a more noticeable one.
- Record the value you kept so a later game update or reset is easy to reproduce.
This method matters because Valve’s guidance is conditional: the connected display, system settings, and individual game all influence the result. SteamOS interface details and defaults can also change with updates, so menu wording may not remain identical forever.
What Steam Machine hardware does—and does not—tell you
Valve’s developer documentation describes Steam Machine as running SteamOS with a discrete, semi-custom AMD desktop-class CPU and GPU. Valve characterizes it as roughly six times more powerful than Steam Deck. That is a broad platform comparison, not a prediction that every game will run at a particular frame rate or that every demanding option should be enabled.
Use that specification as context, not as a substitute for testing. A game’s engine, its default profile, the connected display, and the selected resolution still determine the practical result. The official material supplies no independent benchmark table and no cross-game ranking of ray tracing, shadows, upscaling, anti-aliasing, or frame-cap choices.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The whole system looks wrong
- Return to Settings > Display and recheck the selected resolution.
- Confirm the display is using the expected input and picture mode.
- Test a game at its own default before changing several quality options.
Only one game looks soft or unstable
- Open that game’s graphics or video menu.
- Check its resolution, render scale, and upscaling entries.
- Restore the game’s defaults, then change one option at a time.
Brightness or contrast looks wrong
- Open Settings > Display > Advanced.
- Check HDR and SDR content brightness as appropriate for the connected display.
- Use the game’s own calibration controls if the problem is limited to one title.
Performance did not improve after lowering a setting
That result does not prove the setting is broken. The title may be limited by a different workload, or the changed option may have little effect in the scene you tested. Restore the setting, identify the most demanding repeatable scene, and test a different control rather than lowering everything indiscriminately.
Quick Recap
A practical first-session checklist
- Leave the system resolution at 1080p unless your display or a specific game gives you a reason to change it.
- Remember that 1080p is Valve’s Steam Machine Verified testing resolution and the value labeled Default in the Display dropdown.
- Use Settings > Display for a global change and the game’s own graphics menu for a title-specific change.
- Choose whether your goal is sharpness, smoother motion, visual effects, or display correctness before tuning.
- Change one game option at a time; do not treat a generic ray-tracing, shadow, or upscaling order as official Valve guidance.
- Use Settings > Display > Advanced for HDR and SDR content brightness when the issue is picture presentation.
- Judge the result in the actual game and connected display, not from the menu label alone.
