No single direct-play expansion works with both consoles: PS5 takes a compatible internal M.2 NVMe PCIe Gen4x4 SSD, while Xbox Series X|S uses an Xbox Storage Expansion Card. A USB drive can store games for either system, but current-generation games stored on USB must be moved to the console’s direct-play storage before you can play them.

PS5: choose a compatible M.2 SSD
For internal expansion, Sony specifies an M.2 NVMe SSD with PCIe Gen4x4 support and Key M. Supported capacity is 250 GB to 8 TB. Supported sizes are 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280, and 22110. The drive’s dimensions include its heat-dissipation structure: no more than 25 mm wide, 30, 42, 60, 80, or 110 mm long, depending on form factor, and no more than 11.25 mm thick (up to 8 mm above the board and 2.45 mm below it). Sony recommends sequential read speeds of at least 5,500 MB/s and requires effective heat dissipation, such as a heatsink and heat-transfer sheet. Check the drive and cooler together
Confirm the exact SSD model’s interface, capacity, speed, and dimensions with its heatsink installed. A “PS5 compatible” label is a useful starting point, but the complete drive-and-cooler assembly still needs to fit Sony’s limits. Sony also advises updating PS5 system software before installation.
What M.2 storage can run
Once installed, M.2 storage can hold and launch PS5 and PS4 games, as well as media apps. Sony’s storage guidance explains the supported uses.

Xbox Series X|S: use an Xbox Storage Expansion Card for direct play
The Xbox Storage Expansion Card is the platform-specific option for playing Series X|S optimized games from added storage. Xbox describes the Seagate card as providing extra memory while maintaining the console’s internal SSD peak speed and performance. Xbox’s accessory listing carries that description. Seagate lists 1 TB, 2 TB, and 4 TB versions and says the card supports direct play of Xbox Series X|S optimized games; see Seagate’s Storage Expansion Card product page.
USB drives: shared storage, not shared current-generation game expansion
Using USB storage with PS5
Sony specifies SuperSpeed USB at 5 Gbps or later and a capacity of 250 GB to 8 TB for PS5 USB extended storage. Not every drive is guaranteed to work, and Sony advises against connecting the drive through a USB hub. PS5 games stored on USB must be copied to console storage or an M.2 SSD before they can be played; compatible PS4 games can run directly from USB. Check Sony’s PS5 extended storage requirements.

Using USB storage with Xbox Series X|S
Seagate’s support guidance specifies at least 128 GB and a USB 3.0-or-later connection. Non-optimized games, including Xbox One games, can be played from USB. Series X|S optimized games stored there need to be moved to the console’s internal drive or an expansion card to play. See Seagate’s Xbox external USB drive guidance.
So, one USB drive can serve as a storage or transfer device for both consoles, but it is not a single direct-play expansion for current-generation games on both. For direct play, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S require their respective platform-specific options.

How to decide before buying
- Decide whether you need direct play. Choose the console-specific expansion if you want to launch current-generation games without moving them first. USB storage may suit a library you mainly archive or transfer.
- Match the device to the console. A PS5 M.2 SSD and an Xbox Storage Expansion Card use different interfaces and are not interchangeable.
- Choose capacity for your library. Compare the sizes available for the specific product; no one capacity is best for every player.
- Verify PS5 fit and cooling. Check the SSD’s form factor and the full dimensions of its installed cooling solution against Sony’s requirements.
- Check USB requirements separately. Meeting one console’s USB capacity and connection rules does not establish compatibility with the other.
- Compare local prices at the time you buy. Prices and availability vary, so check current listings rather than assuming a fixed cost.
