You can play Xbox games on a supported Samsung TV without owning an Xbox console: open Samsung Gaming Hub, launch the Xbox app, sign in, connect a compatible controller, and stream an available game over the internet. The game runs in the cloud rather than on hardware in your home.
What you need before you start
- A compatible Samsung TV: Gaming Hub is available on select Smart TV models, broadly from 2022 onward, but support depends on the exact model and region. Samsung’s US and Canada pages describe availability differently, so check your TV’s model and whether the Xbox app appears in its app store rather than relying on the year alone. - Internet access: Samsung recommends at least 20 Mbps. That is a recommendation, not a guarantee of smooth play; performance also depends on your internet environment.
- A compatible controller: The Xbox app requires a supported Bluetooth controller, sold separately. Samsung gives Xbox Wireless Controllers as examples; supported models can vary, so check compatibility for your TV. Some Gaming Hub setups also support USB controllers.
- A Microsoft account: Sign-in is required, and Samsung says an Xbox profile is needed for the listed Xbox app functions.
- Access to the game you want: Cloud play can require a subscription or other title-specific access. A Gaming Hub account or app being free does not mean every Xbox game is free to play.
How to play Xbox games on your Samsung TV
- Check TV and app availability. Find your TV’s model number and confirm that Samsung Gaming Hub and the Xbox app are available for that model and region. If Xbox is not visible, check the TV’s app store and Samsung’s local compatibility information.
- Connect the TV to the internet. From the TV’s Home or Smart Hub interface, open Samsung Gaming Hub.
- Open Xbox and sign in. Launch the Xbox app and use your Microsoft account. Follow any prompts to set up or connect an Xbox profile.
- Pair a controller. Put a compatible Bluetooth controller into pairing mode and connect it through the TV’s Bluetooth settings. Follow the TV’s on-screen instructions if you are using a USB controller.
- Choose an available cloud game. Select a title in the Xbox app and follow any account, subscription, or access prompts. The game streams to the TV from remote servers; it is not installed on the TV or run by a console in your home.
What the Xbox app does—and what it does not
Samsung Gaming Hub is the TV interface; the Xbox app is the route to Xbox Cloud Gaming. Because this is cloud streaming, your experience depends on the network connection and the service’s streaming conditions. Samsung warns that service quality can vary with the internet environment, and the Xbox app listing says server availability and wait times may vary.
The Xbox app does not make every Xbox title available on every Samsung TV. Game catalogs and service access vary by country, device, and date, and the catalog can change. Check the selected game’s current on-screen access terms before assuming it is included with a subscription or available to stream.
Common reasons you may not be able to play
- Gaming Hub or Xbox is missing: The TV model or region may not be supported. Verify the exact model and local app availability; a broad “2022 or newer” guideline is not a guarantee for every set.
- The game asks for payment or a subscription: Cloud gaming access depends on the title and current service terms. Samsung’s app listing describes free Fortnite access separately from subscription-dependent cloud play, so check the prompt for the specific game.
- The controller will not pair: Confirm that the controller is supported by your TV and is in Bluetooth pairing mode. Controller support differs by model and connection type.
- Play is laggy, interrupted, or delayed: Cloud gaming relies on a live internet connection. Samsung’s 20 Mbps recommendation is not a promise of low latency or uninterrupted streaming; service quality and server wait times can vary.
When another option may make more sense
If your TV does not support Gaming Hub or the game you want is unavailable through cloud streaming, the built-in route may not meet your needs. A connected Xbox console is a separate option, but local console play and cloud streaming do not necessarily have the same game availability or latency. Gaming Hub also lists services such as NVIDIA GeForce NOW and Amazon Luna; those are separate services and do not provide Xbox game access by themselves.
