Which Switch 2 microSD Express Card Is Best for Games Like 007 First Light?

The best-supported choice for storing 007 First Light and other Switch 2 downloads is a licensed 1TB microSD Express card. Here is how the 256GB, 512GB and 1TB options compare, what Nintendo supports and what remains unknown about the game’s final download size.

Buy a 1TB microSD Express card if you want one card for 007 First Light and a growing Switch 2 download library. The best-supported named option in the available specifications is the licensed SanDisk 1TB microSD Express Card for Nintendo Switch 2. SanDisk rates it for up to 880 MB/s read speed and estimates space for up to 36 games.

A 512GB card is the sensible value choice for a smaller library, while 256GB works if you buy few digital games. A regular microSD card from the original Nintendo Switch era is not suitable for storing downloadable games on Switch 2: Nintendo says Switch 2 is compatible only with microSD Express cards.

The direct recommendation

Choose the SanDisk 1TB microSD Express Card for Nintendo Switch 2 unless your budget or library size points clearly to another capacity. It combines the largest capacity documented in this card family with the same stated maximum read speed as the smaller versions and a Nintendo-licensed design.

That recommendation is about capacity and documented compatibility, not a claim that every 1TB card is faster in every game. Nintendo allows any card that meets the microSD Express standard, up to 2TB, but the available specifications identify this SanDisk family as a clearly documented Switch 2 option. Prices, stock and regional availability change, so check a current retailer listing before buying.

Samsung microSD Express Card – 256GB for Nintendo Switch™ 2
  • Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
  • Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.

Why Switch 2 needs a different kind of card

Nintendo Switch 2 uses microSD Express for downloadable software. Nintendo Support states that “Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards.” A conventional microSD, microSDHC or microSDXC card that works in the original Switch cannot be used for Switch 2 game storage simply because it has the right physical shape.

MicroSD Express is a performance standard, not just a capacity label. When shopping, look for the words microSD Express on the packaging or product page. A card described only as UHS-I, UHS-II, microSDXC, Class 10 or A2 is not enough evidence of Switch 2 compatibility.

Nintendo says any card meeting the microSD Express standard, with capacity up to 2TB, can be used. Nintendo also recommends using one card rather than spreading software across several cards. One large card avoids repeatedly powering down the console, opening the card slot and remembering which card contains a particular game.

How much storage Switch 2 gives you

Switch 2 has 256GB of internal storage, according to Nintendo’s 2025 hardware information. Some of that space is reserved for system use, so the amount available for games and media is lower than the headline capacity.

The microSD Express card is intended for downloadable software and its updates, downloadable content, screenshots and videos. Save data is different: Nintendo says game save data remains in system memory and cannot be copied or saved to a microSD Express card. A card failure or card replacement therefore does not transfer your saves; the card is primarily a place for the software itself.

SanDisk Switch 2 card capacities compared

Capacity Documented Switch 2 status Maximum read speed SanDisk estimated game count Best fit
256GB Licensed for Nintendo Switch 2 Up to 880 MB/s Up to 9 games Small digital library or mostly physical purchases
512GB Licensed for Nintendo Switch 2 Up to 880 MB/s Up to 18 games Most players who want room without buying 1TB
1TB Licensed for Nintendo Switch 2 Up to 880 MB/s Up to 36 games Large digital library and long-term storage
Other compliant cards Allowed if they meet the microSD Express standard Not stated here Depends on capacity and game sizes Buy only after confirming the exact Express specification

The game counts are SanDisk estimates from its 2026 datasheet, not a guaranteed number of any particular titles. Actual capacity depends on each game, patches, downloadable content and how much space the console reserves. A large first-party game can consume considerably more space than a small indie download, so treat the estimates as planning figures.

Is 1TB worth it for a Switch 2 library?

For most people buying primarily digital games, 1TB is the least restrictive option. It gives you the largest documented headroom in this family and reduces the need to archive and redownload games when a new release arrives. It is especially useful if several people use the same console, if you keep screenshots and videos, or if you prefer to keep games installed for offline or travel use.

The 1TB card is not mandatory for one game. If 007 First Light is your only major download, a smaller card may be sufficient. The reason to buy 1TB is the rest of the library you will build around it: updates, expansions and additional games consume space even when one title fits comfortably.

When 512GB is the better buy

Choose 512GB when you expect a medium-sized digital library and want a lower purchase cost than 1TB. SanDisk’s estimate of up to 18 games is a useful midpoint. It also leaves more room than the 256GB model once the console’s internal storage is occupied by system data and a few games.

For a player who buys a mix of physical cartridges and downloads, 512GB can be the practical balance. Remember that a physical copy may still require downloaded data, patches or downloadable content, so “physical” does not always mean “no storage use.”

When 256GB is enough

Pick 256GB if you buy only a handful of digital games, regularly archive titles you have finished, or expect to use cartridges for most purchases. SanDisk estimates up to nine games, but that number can be lower for unusually large releases or higher for small ones.

The 256GB card also makes sense when you want inexpensive expandable storage immediately and are comfortable replacing it later. Nintendo’s one-card recommendation means upgrading is less convenient than starting with enough capacity, so consider your likely library rather than only the first game you plan to download.

What this means for 007 First Light

IO Interactive and Amazon MGM Studios announced that 007 First Light will launch on Nintendo Switch 2 on March 18, 2027. Nintendo’s game page says an eShop download requires enough available storage, but no final Switch 2 download-size figure is published in the available material.

Do not buy a card based on an unverified file-size rumor. When the eShop listing is live, open the game’s page and check the required storage shown for the Switch 2 version. Leave additional room for launch updates and downloadable content rather than sizing the card to the base download alone.

If 007 First Light is part of a larger digital library, the 1TB recommendation is straightforward. If it is one of only a few downloads, 256GB or 512GB can work, provided the card is genuinely microSD Express.

How to choose a card without buying the wrong standard

  1. Confirm the interface. The product name, packaging or technical specifications should explicitly say “microSD Express.” Do not infer compatibility from a high UHS speed class or from the card’s capacity.
  2. Check the capacity against your library. Use 256GB for a small collection, 512GB for a moderate one and 1TB for a large or growing digital library. Nintendo supports cards up to 2TB, but the SanDisk documentation discussed here covers 256GB, 512GB and 1TB.
  3. Look for Switch 2 licensing or explicit compatibility. The SanDisk family is documented as licensed for Nintendo Switch 2. For another card, verify that it meets the microSD Express standard and that the seller identifies the exact model, not merely a similarly named conventional microSD.
  4. Verify the current warranty and seller terms. The available SanDisk specification does not state a warranty period in the figures used here. Read the current regional listing for warranty coverage, returns and authenticity before purchase.
  5. Check live price and stock. No stable price or availability figure is provided because these vary by region and date. Compare the current total cost, capacity and return policy rather than relying on an old price screenshot.

Setting up the card on Switch 2

Use the console’s on-screen instructions when installing a new card. The exact wording can change with system software, but the safe workflow is consistent:

  1. Power the console down or follow Nintendo’s stated insertion procedure before opening the card slot.
  2. Insert the microSD Express card fully and allow Switch 2 to detect it.
  3. If the console asks to format the card, confirm only after checking that it is a new or backed-up card. Formatting erases existing data.
  4. Open System Settings and the Data Management area to confirm the card’s available space and manage installed software.
  5. Download games from the eShop and watch the available-space figure. If a title is already on internal storage, use Data Management’s software options to move or archive it according to the choices shown on your console.

Do not expect save files to appear on the card after setup. Nintendo stores those in system memory by design. Screenshots and videos are separate from saves and can be stored on the card under the console’s media-management controls.

Performance: what the 880 MB/s figure does and does not tell you

SanDisk lists up to 880 MB/s read speed for all three capacities in this family. That is a maximum sequential-read figure from the 2026 datasheet, not a promise that every game will load at exactly that rate. Real-world behavior depends on the console, game engine, access pattern, firmware and other factors.

Lexar 512GB Play PRO Micro SD Express Card, 900MB/s Read, 4K, V30, UHS-I
  • The perfect card for the Nintendo Switch 2 delivers revolutionary performance that is 4x faster than typical UHS-I microSD cards
  • PCIe technology delivers read speeds up to 900MB/s so the game loads faster
  • Write speed up to 600MB/s deliver accelerated download speeds when paired with the Lexar microSD Express card reader
  • Level-up your handheld gaming experience with next-gen tech
  • 1TB microSD Express card offers more space for your favorite games

For buying purposes, the important distinction is compatibility first, capacity second and headline speed third. A faster-looking conventional card is still the wrong choice if it is not microSD Express. Among the documented SanDisk capacities, the stated maximum read speed is the same, so moving from 512GB to 1TB buys capacity rather than a published speed increase.

Warranty, licensing and availability

The SanDisk cards discussed here are documented as licensed for Nintendo Switch 2, which gives buyers a clear compatibility signal. Licensing does not make the card immune to failure, loss or counterfeit listings, so retain your receipt and review the warranty terms attached to the exact regional model.

The available specifications do not establish a current price, stock position or universal warranty duration. Those details can change by country, retailer and date. Before ordering, confirm the model number, microSD Express wording, capacity, seller identity, return window and warranty jurisdiction on the live listing.

One card or several?

Nintendo recommends using one microSD Express card rather than splitting software across multiple cards. A single 1TB card follows that guidance and is easier to manage: installed games, updates and downloadable content remain in one place, and you do not have to track which card is inserted.

Multiple cards can appear attractive if you already own several, but switching cards creates friction and makes it easier to leave a needed title or update on the card that is not currently installed. If you must replace a card, plan the move as a library-management task and keep your save-data expectations clear: saves remain in system memory, while the software must be downloaded or transferred according to Nintendo’s supported process.

Capacity-planning examples

Mostly physical games

A player who buys cartridges and downloads only occasional digital titles may be comfortable with 256GB. Reserve room for patches, downloadable content and screenshots instead of counting only cartridge purchases.

Digital-first household

For one or more players sharing a console, 512GB is a safer baseline. The documented estimate of up to 18 games gives meaningful room for a mixed library without paying for the largest option immediately.

Collector or frequent downloader

If you want to keep many games installed, buy 1TB. The documented estimate of up to 36 games is the most generous in this family, and the additional space reduces archiving and redownloading as the library grows.

Troubleshooting common storage problems

The console does not recognize the card

First check that the card is explicitly microSD Express. A conventional microSD card can fit physically while still being incompatible with Switch 2 game storage. Remove and reinsert the card using Nintendo’s specified procedure, then check for a formatting prompt or system update. If the card still fails, verify the exact model and seller with the retailer or manufacturer before attempting repeated formatting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A game will not download

Check the free-space figure in Data Management and the required space shown on the eShop listing. Because the final Switch 2 download size for 007 First Light has not been published in the available material, leave a buffer for updates rather than relying on an estimated number.

The game is installed but the save is missing

Moving or replacing a card does not move save data. Nintendo stores saves in system memory, so investigate the console’s user profile, save-data management and backup options rather than searching the microSD card for a save file.

The card fills sooner than expected

SanDisk’s game counts are estimates. Large games, patches, downloadable content, screenshots and video captures can reduce the number of titles that fit. Archive finished software through Data Management, remove unneeded media and use the card’s capacity figure as a planning guide rather than a guarantee.

Bottom line

For a Switch 2 owner planning to buy 007 First Light and other downloadable games, the SanDisk 1TB microSD Express Card for Nintendo Switch 2 is the strongest documented recommendation: licensed compatibility, up to 880 MB/s read speed and a SanDisk estimate of up to 36 games. Choose 512GB for a medium library or 256GB for a small one. Whichever capacity you select, make sure the label says microSD Express; an ordinary Switch SD card will not do the job.
