Nintendo Switch runs Minecraft Bedrock Edition, sold under the plain title Minecraft. It does not run Java Edition. The older Minecraft: Nintendo Switch Edition is a separate, legacy console release, and it is no longer the version new buyers get. As of October 8, 2026, the Switch game is Bedrock, and the newest Switch-relevant build is Bedrock 26.52.
Which edition is on Switch
Mojang’s edition guide lists Nintendo Switch among the Bedrock platforms and describes Java Edition as available on Windows, Mac, and Linux. Mojang’s June 21, 2018 Switch announcement, “Better Together on Nintendo Switch!”, labels the console game “Minecraft for Nintendo Switch (Bedrock)” and says: “This new version of Minecraft on Switch uses the Bedrock engine.”

That matters because the two editions are not interchangeable. Worlds, servers, and multiplayer rules differ between Java and Bedrock, so a Switch player cannot simply join a Java server, and a Java player cannot join a Switch game directly.
What “version” means in this question
The word “version” is used for two different things, and most confusion comes from mixing them up:

- Edition or platform: Switch runs Bedrock. This answer does not change with patch releases.
- Build number: The latest Switch-relevant official hotfix is Bedrock 26.52, posted September 25, 2026. It includes a stability improvement for network-connected Switch devices.
Mojang says hotfixes reach each platform as they are approved, so the changelog alone cannot tell you which build a given console has installed. Check your Switch for an available Minecraft update rather than assuming it already matches 26.52. Mojang also states that releases in 2026 begin with “26,” which explains why build numbers look different from earlier years.
Current Minecraft versus the legacy Switch Edition
The two Switch products share a console and a brand but differ in status. The table below uses the official naming and availability statements from Mojang’s 2018 launch material and its later update instructions and support pages.

If you are buying the game, search for “Minecraft,” not “Nintendo Switch Edition.” Mojang’s 2018 launch announcement covered a physical retail release, but current formats, stock, and retailer listings were not verified for this article, so check the listing you are buying before you order.
Playing with friends
Bedrock on Switch belongs to the cross-play family Mojang describes for Bedrock, which is why it can play with Xbox One, Windows 10, and mobile devices. Java and Bedrock players cannot join one another directly because they run on different servers.

Before you troubleshoot a multiplayer problem, confirm the edition and platform on both sides:
- Both players should be on Bedrock. A Java player will never see a Switch world in their server list.
- Online play on Switch uses a Microsoft account for cross-play.
- Mojang’s Switch FAQ says Nintendo Switch Online is required for Realms on Switch. Subscription rules can change, so check Nintendo’s current service terms before you buy or commit to a subscription.
Nintendo Switch 2 timing
A separate native Minecraft release is planned for Nintendo Switch 2. As of October 8, 2026, that release has not yet reached its date. Mojang announced October 27, 2026 as the release date and said existing Switch owners will have a digital upgrade path, with more details to follow. Until that date, the original Switch runs the Bedrock game described above, and Switch 2 should be treated as a future, separate release.

Quick checks if the versions do not match
- Confirm the title is “Minecraft,” not “Minecraft: Nintendo Switch Edition.” If you own the legacy edition, it still works, but it is not the current Bedrock game.
- Check your console for an available Minecraft update, and install it.
- Compare the build number on your game with the latest official changelog, bearing in mind that the update reaches each console on Mojang’s approval schedule.
- For multiplayer, confirm both players are on Bedrock and both are signed in with the account they use for online play.
Those steps cover most “wrong version” situations. If a Java server or Java-only world is involved, the problem is the edition itself, and no Switch update will fix it.
