In Minecraft Java Edition 26.1, the Wandering Trader sells Name Tags for one Emerald. Master Librarians no longer offer them in that version. Name Tags can also be crafted from paper and any metal nugget, following the Tiny Takeover update.
Which trader sells Name Tags in Java Edition 26.1
The Java Edition 26.1 release notes state: “The Wandering Trader will now offer Name Tags for the price of one Emerald.” (Minecraft Java Edition 26.1 release notes)
Strictly speaking, the Wandering Trader is a separate wandering merchant rather than a villager with a profession, so the title’s question has a slightly different answer in this version than many players expect. In practice, the Name Tag trade is now found on the Wandering Trader, and the Librarian is no longer part of that trade in 26.1.
Why older guides say Librarians sell Name Tags
The older official Minecraft item article “Taking Inventory: Name Tag” says Librarians offered Name Tags for 20–22 Emeralds. That guidance is historical. It conflicts with the Java 26.1 trade notes, which remove the offer from Master Librarians and move it to the Wandering Trader at one Emerald. (Taking Inventory: Name Tag)

|---|---|---|---|
| Wandering Trader trade | Java Edition 26.1 release notes | One Emerald | Find a Wandering Trader that has the trade available |
| Crafting | Tiny Takeover update | Paper and any metal nugget | The ingredients only; the sources do not give a separate crafting cost |
| Master Librarian trade (older guidance) | “Taking Inventory: Name Tag,” an older official article | 20–22 Emeralds | Not available in Java 26.1, per the Java 26.1 notes |
The official pages do not quantify how often a Wandering Trader appears or how often it stocks the Name Tag offer, so plan around the trade being available rather than guaranteed.
Crafting with paper and a metal nugget
The Tiny Takeover update says: “Name tags are now craftable using paper and any metal nugget – so you can give your favorite mini mob the unique name it deserves.” (Tiny Takeover Drop: New Minecraft Content Update) The announcement names the ingredients but does not describe the recipe grid, so check the in-game recipe book for the exact arrangement.

Bedrock Edition and experimental worlds
Bedrock is a separate case. Minecraft’s official 1.20.30 Bedrock update notes describe the Librarian and Wandering Trader trade changes as experimental, meaning the experiment had to be switched on for them to apply. Those notes discuss those trade changes generally and do not confirm the current Bedrock Name Tag trade. (Minecraft 1.20.30 Update Now Available on Bedrock)
Do not assume the Java 26.1 answer applies to Bedrock, or to a Bedrock world with experimental features enabled. Check the trade on a Wandering Trader or Librarian in your own world.

How to use a Name Tag
The older official item article describes the process below. Because it comes from a dated article, check it against your version before relying on it.
- Obtain a Name Tag from a Wandering Trader or by crafting one from paper and a metal nugget.
- Open an anvil and place the Name Tag in it.
- Enter the name you want and pay the XP cost shown in the anvil.
- Take the renamed Name Tag and use it on a mob to apply the name.
The same article says a named creature ordinarily will not despawn. The exception it gives is that hostile mobs can still disappear when the difficulty is set to Peaceful.
