No single villager trade is the universal XP winner. The answer depends on which XP you mean, and on the edition and trade table you are playing with. For a villager’s progress toward its next level, the sources available point to selling items to the villager for emeralds as the general rule, with higher-level offers generally granting more villager XP. For the experience orbs that the player collects, the best-documented figure is an average of 4.5 XP per trade, plus 5 extra XP when the villager is willing to breed. No trade offer is identified as the player-XP leader.
Start by deciding which XP you care about
Villager trading produces two separate experience outcomes, and most “which trade gives the most XP” questions blend them together:
- Villager XP is the experience the villager gains. It moves the villager toward its next trade level, which unlocks better offers.
- Player XP is the experience orbs the player receives from completing a trade.
A trade that is excellent for one of these can be unremarkable for the other, so the answer has to be given separately for each.
Villager XP: the trades that advance the villager most
The Minecraft Wiki’s experience-farming tutorial states the broad rule of thumb: selling items to a villager for emeralds is the practical way to build villager experience, and later, higher-tier trades generally grant more villager XP than early ones. That is a general pattern, not a per-trade table, so it does not name one offer as the highest.

The most precise published numbers come from Microsoft Learn’s Bedrock Creator documentation, “Creating a Trade Table,” last updated 2026-03-05. It explains how custom trade tables work:
- The
trader_expproperty sets the experience the villager gains when a trade is completed successfully. In the introductory example, every default trade gives the villager 1 XP. - Tiers unlock according to the villager’s experience, not the player’s. In the document’s own words, “Tiers are unlocked by the trading experience of the villager, not the player.”
- The example custom butcher table in that documentation gives 2 trader XP to certain sell-for-emerald trades, 1 trader XP to a purchase trade, and 10 trader XP to an example later tier.
Those numbers are illustrations written into an example table, not a ranking of built-in offers. A Bedrock world that uses a custom trade table can assign whatever villager XP the creator chose, so the highest-XP trade in one add-on or world may be different from another. Within the example, the strongest villager-XP values are the later-tier offers, which is consistent with the general rule above.

Player XP: the average figure and the breeding bonus
The Minecraft Wiki’s “Tutorial:Experience farming” page gives the most widely cited player-XP figure: an average of 4.5 XP per trade, with an additional 5 XP when the villager is willing to breed. This is a secondary reference rather than a fresh, version-specific test, and the copy available for this article was captured roughly 1.3 years before 2026-10-08, so treat the figures as a general guide rather than a patch-verified value.
The same source does not rank individual trade offers by the experience orbs they produce. The 4.5 XP figure is an average across trades, so it should not be read as the value of any particular offer.

|---|---|---|
| Level up a villager fastest | Sell items for emeralds; later-tier offers generally grant more villager XP (Minecraft Wiki tutorial) | A specific trade offer that grants the most villager XP in default Java or Bedrock play |
| Understand custom Bedrock XP values | trader_exp sets villager XP per trade (default 1); reward_exp controls whether the player receives orbs (default true) (Microsoft Learn, updated 2026-03-05) |

No named statistical study or formal cross-edition comparison of trade XP was found in the sources reviewed for this article, and no direct testing was carried out, so no trade has been measured here against another.

- Identify the edition. Java and Bedrock handle villager trading differently, and the Bedrock trade-table settings described above only apply where custom tables are used.
- Identify the XP type. For villager leveling, look for the offers that advance the villager. For orbs, the average is the only documented guide.
- Check the trade table if you use custom data. In a Bedrock world with a custom table, the
trader_expandreward_expvalues in that table are the authoritative answer for that world. - Use the general rule when no table is available. Sell items to the villager for emeralds and prioritize higher-tier offers for villager progression.
Until a current, edition-specific trade-by-trade XP table is published, any claim that a single offer is the universal winner should be treated with caution.
