Progressive vs. Interlaced Video: What’s the Difference?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Progressive video draws each frame as one complete image. Interlaced video divides a frame into two fields of alternating scan lines captured or displayed at different times. That difference is why progressive footage is usually easier to edit and view on modern screens, while interlaced footage still matters when working with older recordings or a delivery format that requires it.

What do progressive and interlaced video mean?

Progressive scan (p)

A progressive frame contains all its horizontal scan lines, drawn in sequence from top to bottom. The lines in that frame represent the same time instant. The “p” in labels such as 720p and 1080p identifies this scan method.

Interlaced scan (i)

An interlaced frame is made from two fields, each containing alternating scan lines. In Adobe’s description, the upper field contains odd-numbered lines and the lower field contains even-numbered lines. The fields are captured or displayed in sequence, one field period apart, so they represent different instants in time. The “i” in 1080i identifies this structure.

The number in labels such as 720p or 1080i refers to the vertical scan-line count in Sony’s examples; it does not tell you by itself whether each complete image is progressive or interlaced. Sources: Sony’s scan-format explanation and Adobe’s After Effects guidance.

Why do interlaced and progressive images look different?

Because an interlaced frame combines fields from separate moments, a moving subject may occupy different positions in its two sets of lines. If software combines those fields as though they were one simultaneous image, the subject’s edges can appear comb-like. Adobe also notes that interlaced footage can make thin horizontal lines flicker and complicate freeze frames and slow motion.

Progressive footage avoids those field-combination artifacts because each frame is a complete image from one time instant. That makes it simpler for many modern editing and computer-display workflows, though it does not make progressive the right delivery format in every situation.

What do 1080i60, 720p30, 60i and 60p mean?

The resolution number, scan method and rate must be read together. In Adobe’s encoding examples, 1080i60 means 60 interlaced 1920 × 1080 fields per second—approximately 30 frames per second. By contrast, 720p30 means 30 progressive 1280 × 720 frames per second. So 60i does not mean 60 complete pictures per second, and it should not be compared with 30p as if it necessarily supplied twice as many full frames.

Sony’s examples distinguish progressive rates such as 24p, 30p and 60p from interlaced rates such as 30i and 60i. Conventions can depend on the camera, codec and region, so check the documentation for the specific recording system or format. Sources: Adobe’s encoding examples and Sony’s frame-rate explanation.

Why was interlacing used, and where does it still matter?

Interlacing was developed to transmit television pictures within limited bandwidth. It was used in analog television, and interlaced formats remain in some digital television systems and older cameras or recordings. Modern digital systems typically use progressive scanning, but interlaced sources and specific interlaced delivery requirements still occur.

For a legacy source, identify its field order and the destination’s requirements before editing or exporting. Preserve the interlaced structure when the delivery target requires it. If the target requires progressive video, deinterlace deliberately rather than merely changing a label. Adobe warns that scaling, rotating or applying effects to interlaced video can introduce crossed-field artifacts; field-aware handling is important for interlaced or field-rendered material. See Adobe’s Premiere interlaced-video overview.

Which format should you choose?

Consideration Progressive Interlaced
Image structure Every frame contains all scan lines from one time instant. Each frame contains two alternating-line fields from different instants.
Motion and artifacts Avoids artifacts caused by combining fields from different moments. Can show comb-like edges when fields are combined incorrectly; thin horizontal lines may flicker.
Editing and still images Usually simpler for freeze frames, slow motion and computer-oriented workflows. Requires attention to field order and field-aware processing; deinterlace for progressive output when appropriate.
Compatibility Typical of modern digital systems. May be necessary for a legacy source or a destination that specifically requires interlaced delivery.

Use the recording system’s and destination’s actual specifications rather than assuming one scan mode is universally preferable. This is especially important when converting archival or older camera footage.

Practical workflow for interlaced footage

  1. Check the source format. Confirm whether the recording is interlaced, its field order, frame size and rate in the camera or file documentation or in your editing software’s media properties.
  2. Confirm the delivery target. If it requires interlaced video, preserve the source’s field structure and order. If it requires progressive video, plan to deinterlace.
  3. Use field-aware editing. Avoid treating interlaced fields as a single still image when scaling, rotating or applying effects; those operations can create artifacts.
  4. Review motion and still frames. Check moving edges for combing, thin horizontal details for flicker, and freeze frames or slow-motion sections for field-related problems.
  5. Export and verify. Match the required scan mode and inspect the resulting file on the intended playback system. A label change alone does not convert the underlying scan structure.
