Which Warlock Skills to Use in Diablo 4: Lord of Hatred

Dread Claws is the strongest documented starting point for a Warlock build in Diablo 4: Lord of Hatred, but it is not proven to be the universal best skill or the current ladder meta. The most complete post-launch recommendation is an abyss-focused setup built around Dread Claws, Nether Step, Profane Sentinel and, from level 40, Metamorphosis. It combines direct claw damage, Shadowform stealth, safe movement through the abyss and focused turret damage against elites and bosses.

This setup comes from Sean Martin’s April 29, 2026 guide after 20 hours with the class. Treat it as a practical build recommendation rather than a ranked test of every activity: no independent comparison establishes one Warlock skill as best for leveling, bosses, area clearing and every endgame mode.

The recommended Warlock skill setup

The setup below is the clearest documented answer to the question “which Warlock skills should I use?” in the current Lord of Hatred material. It is designed around abyss skills and Shadowform rather than a general-purpose tier list.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Skill or system Role How the recommendation uses it
Dread Claws Main damage skill Overlapping claw strikes provide the build’s primary damage. The guide prioritizes its damage, ambush and cascading upgrades, with Shadowform and stealth amplifying the setup.
Nether Step Defense and positioning Use it to move through the abyss safely. The skill grants Shadowform stacks on exit, while the Gloomwalker variant allows movement through the abyss while immune and lets you leave early.
Profane Sentinel Elite and boss damage Deploy the turret against a priority target, take the upgrades that reward maintaining the lock on one enemy, and pair it with the Subjugation Fragment.
Metamorphosis Level-40 abyss utility and damage support Switch to it when the Terror Demon passive becomes available at level 40 in the cited guide. It generates Shadowform stacks and allows abyss skills to retain stealth while active.
Hellion Sting Basic resource skill Use it to generate Wrath when required. It is a resource tool here, not the build’s main source of damage.
Terror Swarm Interim ultimate Use it before the level-40 Metamorphosis and Terror Demon setup is available.
Mastermind Soul Shard Class-quest synergy The shard grants the Laalish shadow worm minion and supports the build’s Shadowform and abyss interactions.

The order matters. Dread Claws is the damage investment, Nether Step keeps the character in a favorable position, Profane Sentinel adds focused pressure, and Metamorphosis completes the level-40 version of the Shadowform loop. Hellion Sting and Terror Swarm fill resource and progression gaps rather than competing with the core package.

Why Dread Claws is the core choice

Dread Claws is the skill to prioritize if you want to follow the documented abyss build. Its overlapping claw strikes are described as the setup’s main damage source, so its upgrades have the greatest effect on the build’s intended output. The cited guide specifically calls out three upgrade directions:

  • Damage: improves the skill’s direct contribution.
  • Ambush: connects the attack to the build’s stealth and Shadowform theme.
  • Cascading: extends the claw attack’s value beyond a single initial hit.

Shadowform is important because it is not merely a defensive state in this recommendation. The guide describes it as a source of stealth that can interact with damage bonuses. That makes the timing of Nether Step and, later, Metamorphosis part of Dread Claws’ damage plan: you are trying to attack while the abyss and stealth interactions are active, rather than spending every skill use as an isolated button press.

Do not read “main damage skill” as proof that Dread Claws wins every possible test. The available evidence is one named guide, not a ladder-wide dataset. Its value is that the skills are designed to reinforce one another: Dread Claws supplies the repeated attacks, Shadowform supplies the stealth context, and the other skills create the conditions in which those attacks are safer or more effective.

Nether Step: the defensive skill that also enables damage

Nether Step has two jobs in this build. First, it is the positioning and survival tool. The Gloomwalker variant lets the Warlock move through the abyss while immune, and the character can exit early instead of remaining in the effect for its full duration. That gives you a way to cross dangerous space, avoid an incoming threat or reach a better angle on a target.

Second, Nether Step grants Shadowform stacks when the character exits. Because Shadowform provides stealth and can interact with damage bonuses, the exit is a deliberate transition point. A practical sequence is:

  1. Use Nether Step to enter the abyss when you need safe movement or immunity.
  2. Move through the dangerous area or toward the priority target.
  3. Exit at the point where you want to begin your Dread Claws attacks.
  4. Use the resulting Shadowform stacks and stealth interaction to attack rather than treating the exit as the end of the sequence.

The guide’s recommendation does not establish exact cooldowns, stack counts or damage percentages, so those values should be checked in the live skill tooltip after each balance update. The reliable principle is the interaction: Nether Step is both a defensive movement button and a way to prepare the Shadowform state that the build wants.

Profane Sentinel for elites and bosses

Profane Sentinel is the setup’s focused-target tool. The cited guide presents it as a turret for elite and boss damage and recommends upgrades that reward targeting one enemy and maintaining the lock. That makes it most valuable when a single dangerous target will remain in the fight long enough for the turret’s sustained pressure to matter.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use it after you have identified the target that controls the encounter. In a boss fight, that is normally the boss itself; in an elite pack, it is the elite whose effect or durability is causing the problem. Keep the lock on that enemy instead of repeatedly moving the turret between minor targets. The recommendation also pairs Profane Sentinel with the Subjugation Fragment, so the fragment belongs in the build’s planning rather than being treated as an unrelated choice.

Profane Sentinel does not replace Dread Claws. It gives the build a second damage pattern while Dread Claws remains the main attack. That distinction matters when deciding where to spend points: the turret is a focused supplement for priority targets, not a reason to neglect the claw upgrades that define the setup.

Metamorphosis and the level-40 transition

The cited guide advises switching to Metamorphosis at level 40, when the Terror Demon passive is available. This is a progression breakpoint, not a universal rule guaranteed by every future patch. The guide’s stated reasons are specific:

  • Metamorphosis generates Shadowform stacks.
  • Abyss skills can retain stealth while Metamorphosis is active.
  • The Terror Demon passive becomes available at level 40 in that guide’s version of the skill tree.

Before that point, Terror Swarm serves as the interim ultimate. After the breakpoint, Metamorphosis is intended to make the Shadowform and abyss interactions more consistent. If the live skill tree changes the Terror Demon requirement or the way stealth is preserved, follow the current tooltip rather than forcing the old transition level.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The important planning lesson is to separate an early-level bar from the finished bar. You do not need to hold a level-40-only interaction before the passive is available. Use the functional interim choice, then respec or replace the ultimate when the prerequisite opens.

Hellion Sting and Wrath management

Hellion Sting is the basic skill in this recommendation. Its purpose is to generate Wrath when needed, not to become a competing primary attack. That gives the setup a simple resource loop: use Hellion Sting when the build needs Wrath, then spend that resource on the skills that actually define the damage plan.

Because no resource costs or regeneration values are established in the available material, do not copy a fixed cast count from an old guide and assume it remains correct. Watch the live resource bar and use Hellion Sting whenever a shortage would otherwise interrupt Dread Claws or the rest of the planned sequence.

Mastermind Soul Shard and the Laalish minion

The Mastermind Soul Shard comes from the class quest. The guide identifies it as a central mechanic because it grants the Laalish shadow worm minion and supports the build’s Shadowform and abyss synergy. This is the piece that connects the direct claw attacks to the Warlock’s summoner identity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Blizzard describes the Warlock as a summoner-first class, so the shard should not be dismissed simply because Dread Claws is the visible damage button. The minion is part of the overall design: the character attacks directly while the shard supplies a demonic presence that reinforces the chosen lane. Complete the class quest and include the shard when you are assembling the intended abyss version rather than evaluating Dread Claws in isolation.

Leveling path from the first skill points to the finished setup

The following progression keeps the documented interactions in the order they become useful. It avoids pretending that a level-40 mechanic is available during the opening levels.

  1. Start with the class quest and work toward the Mastermind Soul Shard. The shard grants Laalish and is the foundation of the recommended Shadowform and abyss synergy.
  2. Establish Dread Claws as the damage priority. Spend early offensive investment on its damage, ambush and cascading directions rather than treating every available skill as an equal damage source.
  3. Add Nether Step for movement and defense. Learn to exit it at the moment you want Shadowform stacks and a stealth-enabled attack window.
  4. Use Hellion Sting for Wrath. Keep it available as the basic resource generator instead of relying on it to clear encounters.
  5. Use Terror Swarm as the interim ultimate. This is the guide’s pre-level-40 bridge while the Terror Demon passive is unavailable.
  6. At level 40, check the Terror Demon requirement in the live tree. If the passive is available as described, switch to Metamorphosis and use its Shadowform generation and abyss-stealth interaction.
  7. Add Profane Sentinel for priority targets. Use its focused lock and the Subjugation Fragment when elites and bosses become the limiting fights.

This order also gives you a respec checkpoint. If your character is still leveling quickly, prioritize the skills that function immediately; make the full Metamorphosis change when the required passive is actually unlocked.

How to play the finished rotation

The build has a straightforward combat logic, even though the exact timing depends on the live patch.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Identify the priority target. Against a boss, that is usually the boss. Against a group, choose the elite or enemy whose presence makes the encounter dangerous.
  2. Open with Nether Step when positioning is risky. Use the Gloomwalker behavior to cross the abyss while immune, then exit near the target.
  3. Convert the exit into an attack window. The exit grants Shadowform stacks. Use the stealth interaction for Dread Claws instead of wasting the state on low-value actions.
  4. Deploy Profane Sentinel on the priority target. Maintain its lock as recommended, especially when the target is an elite or boss.
  5. Spend Dread Claws as the primary attack. Its overlapping strikes and selected damage, ambush and cascading upgrades are the build’s central output.
  6. Generate Wrath with Hellion Sting as needed. Do this whenever resource shortage would interrupt the main sequence.
  7. Use Metamorphosis in the level-40 version. Its Shadowform generation and ability to preserve stealth for abyss skills are intended to keep the attack loop active.

The sequence is deliberately target-focused. It does not claim a universal answer for every encounter type, and the guide does not provide a measured cooldown rotation or benchmark. Adapt the order when an encounter requires immediate movement or when the live tooltips change.

What the 3.0.0 skill-tree redesign changes

Lord of Hatred’s 3.0.0 update changed how every class’s skill tree is planned. Blizzard lists more than 40 reworked choices, 80 additional options and up to 83 available Skill Points. Active skills now have three progressively unlocked branches, and players choose one modifier from each branch.

The third branch contains Bonus Skill Variants. Players with Lord of Hatred can access all three variants; players without the expansion can access two of the three. That difference affects how closely a non-expansion character can reproduce a guide written for the expansion’s full tree.

For this Warlock setup, read the branches as a sequence of decisions rather than a checklist:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Take the Dread Claws modifiers that support damage, ambush and cascading behavior.
  • Choose the Nether Step variant that matches your need for safe abyss movement and controlled early exit.
  • Use Profane Sentinel choices that reward a sustained lock on one target.
  • Check the live requirements for the Terror Demon passive before planning the Metamorphosis swap.

Do not assume that a branch name or variant shown in an April guide has the same wording after a later balance patch. The 3.0.0 structure is confirmed, but individual values and prerequisites can change.

Warlock lanes and when to choose a different direction

Blizzard’s developer descriptions present four named Warlock lanes: Legion, Vanguard, Mastermind and Ritualist. They represent different relationships with demons, including summoning, controlling, consuming or drawing power from them. Blizzard also describes the class as summoner-first while identifying fire- and shadow-centered options.

The Dread Claws setup belongs to the shadow-and-abyss side of that identity and uses the Mastermind Soul Shard, but it is not the only legitimate way to build the class. Choose another direction when your goal differs from the documented priorities:

Juego Sony PS5 Diablo IV

  • Summoning and control: favor a lane whose identity is keeping more of the fight in demonic minions and control effects.
  • Direct spell damage: investigate the fire- or shadow-centered options instead of assuming Dread Claws is mandatory.
  • Single-target encounters: the Dread Claws and Profane Sentinel pairing is a logical fit because one skill supplies the main attacks and the other is tuned for a locked elite or boss.
  • Safer movement: Nether Step and its Gloomwalker behavior are the defining tools in this recommendation.
  • Early leveling: use the choices available before level 40; do not evaluate the finished Metamorphosis loop before its passive requirement is met.

The available sources do not provide a second complete, tested build with which to make a numerical comparison. These are decision criteria, not a claim that one lane has a higher damage ranking.

Who can use this setup

Lord of Hatred launched on April 28, 2026 and requires the Diablo IV base game. Blizzard states that an internet connection and a Battle.net account are required to play. The full third-branch access described above also depends on owning the expansion.

If you do not own Lord of Hatred, you cannot reproduce every expansion-only Bonus Skill Variant. You can still use the general Warlock concept where the available tree permits it, but the cited build was written for the expansion’s skill environment and should not be assumed to transfer one-for-one.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Treating Dread Claws as the only button

Symptom: the character has the main attack but feels fragile or inconsistent. Correction: use Nether Step for safe positioning and Shadowform stacks, then add Profane Sentinel for the priority target. The build is a package, not a single-skill ranking.

Using Hellion Sting as primary damage

Symptom: the basic skill occupies most of the combat loop. Correction: reserve Hellion Sting for Wrath generation and return to Dread Claws for the main attack.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Switching to Metamorphosis too early

Symptom: the level-40 interaction is planned before the Terror Demon passive is available. Correction: use Terror Swarm as the interim ultimate and verify the current prerequisite in the live tree before changing the bar.

Breaking the Profane Sentinel lock

Symptom: the turret is repeatedly retargeted and its focused-damage advantage is lost. Correction: select the elite or boss that matters most and maintain the lock as the guide recommends.

Assuming an old tooltip is still current

Symptom: a guide’s level, modifier or stealth behavior does not match the game. Correction: check the current in-game tooltip and later patch notes. The cited guide is dated April 29, 2026, while skill balance can change.

How to judge whether it is “best” for you

Use four questions rather than a universal tier label:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Do you want direct attacks or a more summoner-first experience? Dread Claws is a direct damage centerpiece, while the class also supports lanes built around controlling or drawing power from demons.
  2. Are your hardest fights single targets? Profane Sentinel’s recommended lock makes the setup especially understandable for elite and boss pressure.
  3. Do you value movement safety? Nether Step’s abyss immunity and Shadowform-on-exit behavior are central to the recommendation.
  4. Are you high enough level for the complete interaction? The guide’s Metamorphosis transition depends on the level-40 Terror Demon passive.

No named independent statistic or comparative dataset establishes which Warlock skill is strongest across all activities. The documented evidence supports this as a credible post-launch setup, not as a verified universal meta ranking. Check current patch notes before committing expensive respec resources or presenting it as the top ladder build.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Dread Claws confirmed to be the best Warlock skill in every Diablo 4 activity?

No. It is the main damage skill in a documented abyss build, but no independent comparison establishes a universal winner for leveling, bosses, area clearing and every endgame activity.

When should I replace Terror Swarm with Metamorphosis?

The cited guide recommends making the switch at level 40 when the Terror Demon passive is available. Verify that requirement in the current live skill tree because later patches can change prerequisites.

What does Nether Step contribute besides movement?

Its exit grants Shadowform stacks. The Gloomwalker variant also lets the Warlock move through the abyss while immune and exit early, linking defense and positioning to the build’s stealth-based damage plan.
