Which Xbox Game Studios Games Work on Steam Deck—and What Windows Support Adds

Some Xbox Game Studios games were available on Steam and received Steam Deck compatibility classifications, while Valve separately released Windows drivers for the handheld. Xbox Cloud Gaming offered a third route: streaming supported games through Microsoft Edge. These developments did not create a native Xbox layer for SteamOS or make the entire Xbox catalog available on Steam Deck.

What the March 2022 announcement actually covered

A March 10, 2022 report connected two distinct developments: selected Xbox Game Studios games sold through Steam were appearing with Steam Deck compatibility classifications, and Valve had made Windows drivers available for the handheld. The first concerned specific Steam editions of games; the second gave users an optional way to run Windows on the device. They were not a single Xbox integration. Tech Times’ March 10, 2022 report and Valve’s Windows-driver announcement describe those separate developments.

The report did not say that all Microsoft-published games, Xbox console games, or Game Pass titles became available on Steam Deck. Its examples were games available through Steam, where the Deck runs the Steam version under its own compatibility system.

Games named in the original report

The March 10, 2022 article cited these five examples. It did not present them as a complete catalog, and its classifications should be treated as historical rather than a guarantee of each game’s status today.

The report’s named examples are a snapshot from 2022, not a current compatibility list. Check the individual Steam store page and recent player reports before buying: game updates, launchers, anti-cheat systems, and SteamOS compatibility changes can affect whether a title works well.

What a Steam Deck compatibility label tells you

A Steam Deck label applies to a particular game as offered through Steam. It is not Xbox certification, does not promise flawless operation after every update, and does not guarantee that every launcher, multiplayer feature, or anti-cheat system will work as expected. Nor does it grant access to the game through an Xbox console library or an Xbox subscription.

A Steam game can run on SteamOS through Valve’s Linux compatibility technology without having a native Linux build. For the player, the practical questions are whether the Steam edition launches and plays acceptably on the Deck, and whether its controls and online features meet their needs.

Ownership follows the store or service used. Buying a Steam edition gives you the Steam license; an Xbox or Microsoft Store purchase does not automatically provide that license. Likewise, having Game Pass does not turn a Steam game into an owned Steam copy. A multiplayer game such as Sea of Thieves also depends on its online services and account requirements, not just its Deck label.

Three ways to play, with different trade-offs

Route What runs on the Deck What you need Main trade-off
SteamOS and a Steam edition A locally installed Steam game that works with Steam Deck A Steam license and enough local storage Compatibility varies by game and can change; a Steam license is separate from Xbox ownership.
Windows on Steam Deck Windows PC games and software, potentially including Microsoft’s Windows Xbox ecosystem A Windows installation, suitable drivers, and the game or subscription rights you intend to use More setup and maintenance, with possible differences in controls, power management, storage use, and handheld experience.
SteamOS and Xbox Cloud Gaming in Edge A supported game streamed from Microsoft’s servers Edge setup, an eligible account and entitlement, regional availability, and a reliable internet connection It is streaming, not a local game installation; network quality and latency matter, and cloud play cannot be used offline.

What installing Windows adds—and what it does not

Valve’s Windows-driver release made Windows an option on Steam Deck; it did not add a native Xbox app to SteamOS. Windows can broaden access to Windows-only games and software, and may make Microsoft’s Windows PC gaming services more practical. Access still depends on the relevant game, account, subscription, hardware, drivers, and service requirements. Installing Windows does not grant game licenses or subscriptions. Valve’s announcement establishes the driver release; it does not establish that Windows is required or best for every Deck owner.

Windows is a trade-off rather than a universal upgrade. Users may need to manage driver updates, storage allocation, power behavior, controls, and interface navigation. SteamOS remains the more direct route for a Steam-first library; Windows is worth considering when a specific game or application requires it and the owner is willing to handle the extra setup.

Where Game Pass and cloud gaming fit

Cloud gaming on SteamOS

Microsoft documented a way to access Xbox Cloud Gaming through Edge on Steam Deck. The game is streamed from the cloud rather than installed as a PC copy. You need internet access, an eligible Microsoft account and subscription or entitlement, and support for the game and service in your region. Network interruptions, latency, and image quality can affect play.

Microsoft’s instructions also carry an important support qualification: the Edge Flatpak is community-maintained, and Microsoft says it does not actively maintain that package or officially support Edge on SteamOS. The procedure below is therefore a browser-based setup, not an officially supported native Xbox app for SteamOS. See Microsoft’s Steam Deck instructions for the documented steps.

Best Value
Valve Steam Deck 1TB Upgraded Handheld Gaming Console with Carring case, 1280 x 800 OLED Display Silicone Soft Cover Protector & Joystic Cap & Tempered Glass Film Bundle
  • Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
  • Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
  • Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
  • Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
  • The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.

PC Game Pass on Windows

Installing Windows may let a Deck owner use Windows PC services, subject to the service’s current requirements and each game’s compatibility. This is different from playing through SteamOS, and it does not mean every Game Pass title will work well on the hardware. A subscription provides access under the service’s terms; it is not the same as owning the Steam edition.

Set up Xbox Cloud Gaming through Microsoft Edge

Microsoft’s documented process uses SteamOS Desktop Mode to install Edge, add it to Steam as a non-Steam game, and launch the Xbox play website. Microsoft recommends using a mouse and keyboard for setup; the Deck’s on-screen keyboard is also available.

  1. Press the Steam button, then choose Power > Switch to Desktop.
  2. Open Discover Software Center and go to Applications > Internet > Web Browsers. Install Microsoft Edge.
  3. Open the Application Launcher, locate Edge, and add it to Steam as a non-Steam game.
  4. Open Konsole and run this command:
    flatpak --user override --filesystem=/run/udev:ro com.microsoft.Edge
  5. In Steam, open the Edge shortcut’s properties. In its launch options, append the following after @@ u @@ as shown in Microsoft’s instructions:
    --window-size=1024,640 --force-device-scale-factor=1.25 --device-scale-factor=1.25 --kiosk "https://www.xbox.com/play"
  6. Set the shortcut’s controller layout to Gamepad with Mouse Trackpad.
  7. Return to Gaming Mode, find the shortcut in the Non-Steam section, and launch it.

If the shortcut does not launch or input is missing, check that the permission command and launch options were entered exactly, that the controller layout is selected, and that your account and region are eligible. Streaming problems can also come from Wi-Fi quality, service availability, or changes to the browser or Xbox service; a successful setup cannot eliminate those dependencies.

Choose a route based on what you already have

  • Choose SteamOS and Steam if the game is sold on Steam, its current Deck compatibility suits you, and you want a local installation without changing operating systems.
  • Consider Windows if a particular Windows-only game, launcher, or service is the reason you bought the Deck and you accept additional setup and upkeep.
  • Choose cloud streaming if the title is available through Xbox Cloud Gaming, your account is eligible, your internet connection is dependable, and you do not need offline play.

“Available on Steam Deck” in the 2022 coverage meant selected Steam games could run on the device; it did not mean the Xbox console catalog or all Game Pass games could be installed natively through SteamOS.
