There is no established universal best Pokémon Fire starter: the right pick depends on the game you plan to play and which Pokémon you like most. This guide compares Charmander, Cyndaquil, Torchic, Chimchar, Tepig, Fennekin and Litten—the Fire-type first partners covered in Nintendo’s 2016 feature through Alola—by character and official flavor, not by unsupported claims about battle strength.
How to choose a Fire starter
Nintendo describes the first-partner choice as personal. Some players weigh type, abilities and suitability; others know instinctively which Pokémon feels like the right companion. Use the criteria below to make a choice that fits your priorities:
- Design and character: Pick the one whose look and personality you enjoy.
- Evolution-line identity: Consider the official flavor and traits associated with the Pokémon and its line.
- Your game: First-partner options differ by game. Choose from the starters actually available in the adventure you plan to play.
- Battle performance: Compare candidates only using evidence for the specific game and rules you care about. The descriptions below do not establish which starter is strongest.
Nintendo’s feature says that players choose one of three first partners at the start of an adventure and that preferences vary. Nintendo’s first-partner feature is the basis for the seven-character scope here; it dates to 2016 and does not cover later generations.

Charmander: the classic fire-tail companion
Nintendo’s description says Charmander’s tail flame reflects its emotions. Choose Charmander if that expressive detail and its straightforward fire-lizard identity appeal to you. The description is character flavor, not evidence about how well it performs in a particular game.
Cyndaquil: a reserved Pokémon with a defensive flare
Cyndaquil protects itself by flaring the flames on its back. Its official description makes it a good fit for players who like a quieter-looking partner with a distinctive defensive trait.

Torchic: an energetic fireball thrower
Torchic breathes fire and launches fireballs. Nintendo’s 2016 description says its fire is “over 1,800 degrees Fahrenheit”; that is an in-universe Pokémon fact, not a real-world measurement or a battle statistic. Torchic’s flavor suits players drawn to an eager, lively companion.
Chimchar: a flame fueled from within
Chimchar’s flame is fueled by gas in its belly and, according to Nintendo’s description, persists in rain. That gives the line a resilient, fire-within identity that may appeal if you like a partner whose signature trait feels tenacious.

Tepig: a nose-fired fireball specialist
Tepig dodges attacks while shooting fireballs from its nose in Nintendo’s feature. Separately, the official Pokémon Legends: Z-A Tepig page identifies it as the Fire Pig Pokémon and describes it as using its excellent sense of smell to find food. These are official character details, not a comparison of its battle performance.
Fennekin: a fox with heat vents
Fennekin vents hot air from its ears. If you prefer a fox-like design and a more unusual visual expression of fire, that official trait may make it stand out for you.

Litten: a fire starter with a resourceful streak
Litten turns its shed fur into fireball attacks. Its flavor combines a catlike identity with a distinctive way of producing fire, making it a natural pick for players who enjoy clever details in a Pokémon’s character concept.

Start with the game you intend to play, then choose from its available partners based on the design or character detail you like most. If you are choosing only among the seven covered here, match your preference to the traits that stand out: Charmander’s expressive tail flame, Cyndaquil’s defensive flare, Torchic’s fireballs, Chimchar’s persistent flame, Tepig’s nose-fired shots, Fennekin’s hot-air vents or Litten’s fur-made fireballs.

If you mean “best” in a battle-performance sense, there is no supported cross-game winner in these descriptions. A meaningful strength comparison needs to name the game and account for that game’s mechanics and available evidence; character flavor alone cannot settle it.
Scope: which starters are included?
Nintendo’s 2016 feature documents the seven partners compared above, through Alola. It is not a complete current roster of every Fire-type first partner. The official Pokédex identifies Scorbunny and Fuecoco as Fire-type Pokémon, but that Pokédex information alone does not establish starter status for them. Tepig also appears as a Fire-type Pokémon on the official Pokémon Legends: Z-A page, but that page is not a complete starter roster. Check the specific game’s official materials if you need a definitive list of its available first partners.
