The four recurring classic Call of Duty Zombies characters are Tank Dempsey, Nikolai Belinski, Takeo Masaki, and Dr. Edward Richtofen. They are the Aether crew, appearing in different incarnations called Primis and Ultimis. They are not the only characters in every Zombies game: later entries expanded both the story cast and the playable-character format.
Who are the four classic Zombies characters?
| Character | Quick identification | Black Ops 7 incarnation |
|---|---|---|
| Tank Dempsey | U.S. Marine | The official profile describes an incarnation who fought in Vietnam in 1968. |
| Nikolai Belinski | Soviet tank commander | The profile places this incarnation in Afghanistan in 1984. |
| Takeo Masaki | Japanese warrior | The profile describes this incarnation as a ronin in Japan in 1591. |
| Dr. Edward Richtofen | Scientist | The profile describes an incarnation pulled from 1945 into an alternate world. |
Those dates and descriptions refer to the specific incarnations presented on the official Black Ops 7 Zombies page, not universal biographies shared by every version of the characters.
What are Primis and Ultimis?
Primis and Ultimis are different incarnations of the same four recurring characters, not two separate sets of unrelated heroes. The distinction is part of the Aether story’s multiple timelines. In Black Ops 4, those timelines converged and brought the groups together. The Black Ops 4 Zombies page names Richtofen, Dempsey, Takeo, and Nikolai in its Alcatraz episode description.
Are these four the main characters in every Zombies game?
No. “The four main characters” is most accurate when referring to the classic Aether crew. Treyarch’s later stories use broader casts, and some games do not restrict players to a fixed four-person playable crew.

Cold War changed the playable-character format
Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War begins a new Zombies narrative with Requiem and Samantha “Sam” Maxis among its important figures. Treyarch said players would use Multiplayer Operators and familiar campaign characters instead of being locked to one of four Zombies characters. Its Into the Dark Aether: A New Zombies Story article gives examples including Russell Adler, Lawrence Sims, and Sgt. Frank Woods. Samantha is central to the story, but she is not one of the four Aether crew members.
Black Ops 6 continues the Dark Aether story
Black Ops 6 Zombies: The Story So Far recounts Samantha’s sacrifice to seal the Dark Aether and Richtofen’s role as Director. The game continues the Dark Aether storyline with Requiem figures and Samantha and Richtofen in significant roles; that does not make Samantha a fifth member of the classic four.

Black Ops 7 features the four in an expanded team
The official Black Ops 7 team blog presents the four as distinct incarnations within an expanded crew. They are featured characters, not the entry’s entire cast. The game’s official Zombies page provides the incarnation details in the table above.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why do the four remain closely associated with Zombies?
Their prominence comes from the Aether story’s recurring heroes and the different incarnations that carry those identities across its timelines. Treyarch lead writer Craig Houston described the Black Ops 4 ending this way: “Everything that happened in the Aether Story actually happened. At the end of Black Ops 4, our heroes – in their various incarnations – sacrificed themselves in order to collapse the multiverse and banish the evil they bravely fought to the Dark Aether.” That ending is why the familiar names can recur in later Zombies material without every appearance being the same version of the character.
