Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

Several pairings are popular queer ships, and some are read as queer-coded, but those readings are fan interpretations, not declarations made by the game. The most recent academic source on this topic is a 2024 Tilburg University thesis on queer readings in Genshin fandom, and it draws the same line between canon and fan interpretation.
Three categories readers mix up
Most confusion about this question comes from treating three different things as one. Keeping them apart makes the answer much clearer.

| Category | What it means | Example pairings |
|---|---|---|
| Explicit canon relationship | The game’s text directly states that two characters are in a romantic or sexual relationship. | None established in the sources reviewed |
| Established canon interaction | The game shows the characters together, such as living arrangements or close story moments, without declaring romance. | Alhaitham and Kaveh as roommates |
| Popular ship or queer reading | Fans infer romance or queer-coded subtext from interactions, dialogue, or in-game writing. | Yae Miko and Ei; Alhaitham and Kaveh |
| Headcanon | A personal interpretation a reader holds, often not shared by others and not tied to the text. | Varies by player |
A pairing can sit firmly in the third or fourth category while still being a canon interaction. What the sources do not show is any pairing moving into the first category.
The pairings fans most often read as queer
Yae Miko and Ei
Yae Miko and Ei are the most widely discussed queer reading in the fandom. Fans point to their interactions and to the in-game novel Pretty Please, Kitsune Guuji? as suggestive material. The academic analysis treats these as cues that fans use to build a queer-coded interpretation. It does not treat them as a statement that the two characters are a couple. Readers who describe the pairing should say it is read by many fans as romantic or queer-coded, not that it is confirmed.

Alhaitham and Kaveh
Alhaitham and Kaveh are the other frequently named ship. The game establishes them as roommates and gives them notable interactions, which is the official foundation for the pairing. The thesis describes the relationship as open-ended, and the romantic framing as fandom shipping rather than an explicit romance written into the story. In practical terms, the official text supports closeness and shared living; the romance belongs to the fan side of the ledger.
Why a queer reading is not the same as confirmation
A lack of explicit confirmation does not make queer readings invalid, and it does not mean the game is hiding anything. It means the label has to match the evidence. A useful way to check any claim is to ask which of four things it rests on: official text that states the relationship, official text that implies it, a fan interpretation of that text, or a personal headcanon. The first is the only one that settles canon status.

How to describe these pairings accurately
- Use “often shipped” or “popular ship” for Yae Miko/Ei and Alhaitham/Kaveh.
- Use “read by some fans as” or “interpreted as queer-coded” when describing subtext.
- Avoid “they are canonically dating” unless a direct official passage states that relationship. None was established in the sources reviewed.
- Do not present fan interpretations as facts about a character’s sexuality.
- Name the source type whenever you make a claim: game text, a novel, fan discussion, or academic analysis.
What this answer does and does not rule out
The official HoYoverse news page surfaced in the search does not establish any couple’s status, and the HoYoLAB discussion thread is community commentary rather than a developer policy. Neither settles the question, and no comprehensive official statement covering every pairing was found. The answer also reflects one broad search and the academic source above, not an exhaustive review of every quest, every language version, or every update. Story content can change, so the status of any pairing should be rechecked against the current game text and official channels.
