Who Are the Most Dangerous D&D Demons? What the Official Listings Can—and Can’t—Rank

Official listings identify high-CR demon candidates, but different editions and incomplete stat-block comparisons prevent a reliable universal top-20 ranking.

There is no single official ranking of the 20 most dangerous D&D demons. The answer depends on which edition and stat block you use, and a challenge rating alone cannot predict how a demon will perform against every party. Official listings identify several high-CR candidates, but the available figures are not enough to support a reliable top-20 order.

Here, “dangerous” means a creature’s threat in combat—not how evil, famous, or important it is in the lore. That distinction matters: a demon lord’s reputation is not a substitute for comparing its actual attacks, defenses, control abilities, and other combat features.

Why there is no definitive top-20 ranking

D&D’s official listings bring together demons from different books and editions. Their source labels matter: a name can appear in more than one publication, and different versions of a creature should not be treated as if they had identical statistics. The available listing information identifies candidates and some challenge ratings, but does not provide the consistent, fully compared set of twenty stat blocks needed to justify an exact order.

So a numbered list purporting to rank twenty demons by combat threat would imply more certainty than the evidence supports. A defensible ranking would need to name its edition and source for each stat block, then compare the same kinds of combat details across all twenty. Without that work, the most useful answer is to clarify what “dangerous” means and identify what the official listings establish.

What challenge rating tells you—and what it does not

Challenge rating (CR) is a useful starting point for comparing monsters, but it is not a guarantee of how difficult a particular encounter will be. The 2014 Basic Rules connect CR to an XP award and warn that changing a monster’s spells can make it a greater or lesser threat than its listed rating suggests. The 5.2 SRD likewise treats a monster’s stat block as the information needed to run it, including hit points, defenses, actions, and special abilities.

To judge encounter threat, compare more than CR: durability, damage, disabling or control effects, defenses, mobility, spellcasting, and traits that affect how often the creature acts or survives. The 5.2 SRD also emphasizes using a monster’s powerful limited-use abilities and its available multiattack, bonus actions, reactions, and legendary actions appropriately. A stat block’s practical threat therefore depends partly on how it is run.

What the official demon listings establish

D&D Beyond’s Fiend-filtered listing shows Demogorgon with a CR 26 entry from Out of the Abyss and a CR 26 entry from Mordenkainen Presents: Monsters of the Multiverse. It shows Baphomet with a CR 23 entry from Out of the Abyss and a CR 23 entry from Monsters of the Multiverse, as well as a CR 23 entry for Fraz-Urb’luu from Out of the Abyss. These are observations about those listed entries, not proof that every version of a creature has identical statistics.

A separate official demon-tagged listing includes candidates such as Balor, Glabrezu, and many lesser demons, with source labels including the 2014 Basic Rules, Monster Manual, Out of the Abyss, Volo’s Guide to Monsters, and Mordenkainen’s Tome of Foes. The range of sources is a reason to specify the stat block behind any comparison, not a basis for assuming all entries are interchangeable.

  • Quick Facts: 65 minis, 28mm Heroic scale - Assembled and optimized for both painting and gameplay in most fantasy tabletop games, including D&D Unpainted and unprimed (PRIMER is recommended). Made of a mix of Hard PVC plastic and ABS plastic, which results in greater detail and feel compared to softer plastics.
  • Refreshed Designs of Essential Monster & Encounter Miniatures for D&D: Wildspire's set of fantasy miniatures for D&D contains many classic and recognizable character types that frequent most Dungeons & Dragons games. Awesome for supplementing your existing collection or starting a new collection.
  • Versatility & Value: This set includes a variety of highly useful and iconic figurines for D&D, allowing players to customize their encounters with unique d and d characters and dnd monster miniatures.
  • Customer Satisfication Priority: If any of our dnd figures arrive damaged, we will be happy to make it up in any way we can. DND figurines and 28mm miniatures can sometimes not glue properly or may be prone to bending if the warehouse fails to exercise proper care.
  • Painting Tips & Max Painting Potential: While priming the minis is optional, we recommend it to maximize the visual appeal and ease of painting. Express your artistic flair while enhancing your game experience. Use any acrylic hobby paint for PVC/plastic.

The 2014 SRD’s warlock-patron passage names Demogorgon, Orcus, Fraz’Urb-luu, and Baphomet as examples of demon lords powerful enough to forge a pact. That brief example is not a complete demon-lord catalog, and narrative prominence by itself does not establish combat rank.

How to compare demon stat blocks fairly

A useful ranking should state its rules scope and use one consistent comparison method. For each demon, identify the publication and edition of the stat block, then assess:

  • Miniatures for D&D to Match the Creativity of Your Games - versatile figurines D&D - used as monsters, player-characters or NPC. Great gift for miniature painting for Dungeons & Dragons.
  • Durability: hit points and defenses such as resistances or immunities.
  • Offense: damaging actions, attack options, and how much pressure the creature can apply.
  • Control: abilities that disable, restrain, or otherwise limit what characters can do.
  • Mobility: movement and other ways to reach or evade targets.
  • Special abilities and spellcasting: effects that change the encounter beyond ordinary attacks.
  • Action economy and survival: features such as multiattack, bonus actions, reactions, legendary actions, and limited-use abilities.

The ranking also needs a declared basis for the encounter: party level and capabilities, surroundings, allies, and tactics can all change the practical threat. Without those assumptions, a qualitative comparison is more honest than claiming that a single isolated CR predicts a universal result. If demon lords and ordinary demons are handled in separate groups, the criteria should say so rather than silently mixing lore stature into a combat ranking.

Who is the strongest demon in D&D?

“Strongest” can mean highest listed CR, greatest combat threat in a particular encounter, or greatest standing in the lore. Those are different questions. The official listing observations above show Demogorgon at CR 26 in two identified entries, while the cited Baphomet and Fraz-Urb’luu entries are CR 23. That makes CR a point of comparison for those specific listings, not a complete answer about every edition, every demon, or the outcome of a fight.

To compare a demon with another demon lord such as Orcus on combat terms, use the relevant edition’s stat blocks and examine their actual abilities under the same encounter assumptions. A name’s prominence or its appearance in a short illustrative list does not provide that comparison.

Where to check the rules

For a real encounter or a carefully sourced ranking, consult the official stat block in its named publication. The Monster Manual is a core monster reference; the official listings also identify demon entries in Mordenkainen Presents: Monsters of the Multiverse and Out of the Abyss. Check the edition and publication shown for the specific entry before using its CR or abilities.
