Carlyle acquired RuneScape publisher Jagex in January 2021, but its purchase price was not publicly disclosed. In a January 2021 interview, Jagex CEO Phil Mansell said it was “a fair assumption” that Carlyle paid more than $530 million. That figure is not a confirmed price: the $530 million amount was disclosed for an earlier 2020 sale of Jagex to Macarthur Fortune.
How much did Carlyle pay for Jagex?
The price Carlyle paid for Jagex has not been publicly stated in the official materials cited here. In a January 29, 2021 interview with PCGamesInsider, Jagex CEO Phil Mansell described it as “a fair assumption” that Jagex “went for more than $530 million.” The interview said no figure had been publicly placed on Carlyle’s deal, so this is a CEO’s characterization—not a disclosed transaction value. PCGamesInsider’s January 2021 interview.
Where did the $530 million figure come from?
Jagex announced on April 28, 2020 that Macarthur Fortune Holding LLC had acquired the company through Platinum Fortune LP from Shanghai Hongtou Network Technology for $530 million. That was a different transaction, before Carlyle’s acquisition. It should not be presented as Carlyle’s confirmed purchase price. Jagex’s April 2020 announcement.

| February 9, 2024 | CVC Capital Partners Fund VIII and Haveli Investments | Carlyle announced an agreement to sell Jagex, subject to customary regulatory approvals. The terms were not disclosed, and the reviewed announcements do not establish when the deal closed. |
Jagex confirmed Carlyle’s acquisition in its 2021 financial results announcement. Carlyle and Jagex described the 2024 transaction as an agreement, rather than disclosing its terms. See Carlyle’s February 2024 announcement and Jagex’s announcement. Those announcements alone do not confirm completion, so they do not establish who owns Jagex today.
