It did not acquire every Telltale-associated franchise or continue the old company as an uninterrupted business.
Who bought Telltale Games?
LCG Entertainment, a holding company that said it would do business as Telltale Games, announced the purchase on August 28, 2019. The deal was led by game-industry veterans Jamie Ottilie and Brian Waddle, with support from investors and advisers including Chris Kingsley, Lyle Hall, Tobias Sjögren, and Athlon Games. Telltale’s announcement described the transaction as the purchase of the former studio’s key assets, trademarks, technology, and selected intellectual property.
That scope matters: the announcement was not a claim that LCG had bought the entirety of the old company or every license associated with its games. Telltale’s current About page says that, as of 2019, LCG owns the Telltale brand, assets, and various IP, and operates and markets games under that name. The company’s About page identifies Batman: The Telltale Series and The Wolf Among Us as legacy franchises.
What did LCG say it planned to do?
At the time of the announcement, LCG said it intended to re-release selected games from Telltale’s back catalog and develop new games in some of the best-selling brands. Those were stated plans, not a promise that every old game or franchise would return. The announcement’s use of “selected” reflects the limits of the acquired rights. The 2019 announcement

Did LCG acquire every Telltale franchise?
No. Rights depended on the franchise and title. GamesBeat reported that LCG had rights to original Telltale games including Puzzle Agent, The Wolf Among Us, and Batman, while other rights—including The Walking Dead—reverted to original owners after the studio went under. GamesBeat’s contemporaneous report therefore distinguishes ownership of the Telltale name and selected properties from control of every licensed series.
Publishing rights also should not be confused with ownership of Telltale or its acquired IP. Leyou Technologies’ report for the six months ended June 30, 2020 said Athlon Games, a publishing partner in the revival, held exclusive publishing rights to certain games, including Batman and The Wolf Among Us. Leyou’s interim report establishes a specific publishing role; it does not say Athlon owned Telltale or all of its properties.

LCG acquired the Telltale brand along with selected assets and IP, and said it would do business as Telltale Games. Jamie Ottilie, CEO of the new Telltale, explained the appeal in a statement quoted by GamesBeat: “All of us were big fans of the games Telltale created, as we strongly believe in games as a storytelling medium and nobody did it better.” He added that players and industry colleagues had mourned the closure and that the new company believed “there is still so much life to the brand and its franchises.” GamesBeat’s report
