Nintendo’s developers have described one scene as a romance scene and framed Link and Zelda as childhood friends whose closeness was meant to drive the story. That is strong evidence for how one game was made. It is not a series-wide statement that Link is in love with Zelda in every game.
What Skyward Sword’s developers said
The most direct comment comes from producer Eiji Aonuma, speaking about the moment when Zelda jumps toward Link:
“And I got hung up on how it was kind of a lovey-dovey romance scene.”
Aonuma’s remark has context. He initially questioned whether a scene like that belonged in a Zelda game. The developers’ explanation was that it helped establish the childhood friends’ closeness and made players want to help Zelda.

“Part of the background is that Link and Zelda are childhood friends, so it’s only natural that they are close. For that reason, we wanted to make Zelda care for Link from the start more than ever before.”

Together, these comments show deliberate romance-coded staging in one game. They describe tone, intent and emotional closeness. They do not hand over a line of dialogue in which Link declares his feelings, so the romantic reading rests on how the scene is built and how its creators describe it.
What those comments do not establish
- A universal crush. The remarks concern a single game and its scenes. They do not say every incarnation of Link is attracted to Zelda.
- A couple label for the series. Nothing in these interviews gives Link and Zelda an official relationship status across the franchise.
- A confirmed feeling on Link’s side. The developers talk about closeness and the scene’s atmosphere. Whether Link himself feels romance is an interpretation the game leaves open.
Other games are separate portrayals
Later Nintendo material does not extend the Skyward Sword framing. In a developer interview for The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom (2024), the Link and Zelda relationship is described as a source of ideas for story and design, not as a romance. A game-by-game reading is the only accurate approach, because each title sets its own relationship tone.

Compare the sources before quoting them
Not every piece of evidence carries the same weight. The table separates what each source supports from what it cannot prove.
| Source | Type | What it supports | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nintendo developer interview on Skyward Sword (Aonuma and Mori) | Official developer comments on intent | A romance-coded scene and the childhood closeness behind it | A universal crush or couple status in any game |
| Nintendo developer interview on Echoes of Wisdom (2024) | Official developer comments | The Link and Zelda relationship as a source of story and design ideas | Any romantic characterization |
| Nintendo Life feature (2012) | Editorial interpretation | A reading of the Skyward Sword bond as possibly more intimate than friendship, while noting that friendship is the explicit basis | Official Nintendo canon |
| Skyward Sword HD story page, Nintendo | Official product page | That the Nintendo Switch remaster is about Link and Zelda, who sit at the heart of its story | Romance on its own |
Critics and fans read further than the developers
A 2012 Nintendo Life feature argued that the Skyward Sword relationship could be read as something more intimate than friendship, even while acknowledging that friendship is the explicit basis of the bond. That is a critic’s view, not a statement from Nintendo. Fan readings that treat Link as sweet on Zelda in that game are reasonable, but they belong to interpretation rather than canon.

How to phrase the claim accurately
- Use: “romance-coded,” “romantic subtext,” or “many players read it as a crush.”
- Avoid: “Nintendo confirmed Link is in love with Zelda,” which overstates what the developers said.
- Name the game. Write “in Skyward Sword” rather than “in Zelda” when the claim depends on one title.
A checklist for judging any Link and Zelda claim
- Which game or incarnation is it about? Start with the title. Relationship tone changes between games.
- What kind of evidence is it? Distinguish in-game text, a developer’s description of intent, and outside commentary.
- Is romance stated or inferred? A developer calling a scene “romance” is different from a character saying so, and both differ from a reviewer reading subtext into closeness.
Playing the clearest example
For readers who want to see the Skyward Sword material for themselves, The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD is available on Nintendo Switch. Playing it shows the scene and the friendship the developers describe, but it will not settle the question for every other game.
