No single list of people banned from Super Smash Bros. Ultimate tournaments exists. Who is barred depends on which body made the decision. A tournament organizer can bar someone from its own events, Nintendo can restrict entry to its own competitions or suspend a player’s online play, and a league can ban a character from its competition without banning anyone. A named ban only means something once you know who issued it, what it covers, when it took effect, and whether it was appealed, lifted or changed.

Nintendo does not publish a universal blacklist of banned competitors, and the sources cited here do not describe a public registry covering the community as a whole. The named cases below are dated reports of specific organizers’ decisions, not a current roster.

Four different things “banned” can mean

Restriction Imposed by What it restricts Reach beyond that issuer Source and date
Organizer ban The tournament organizer Entry to that organizer’s events under its event policy Not stated in sources for other organizers 2GGaming announcements, as reported July 2, 2020
Nintendo event or competition restriction Nintendo Entry to Nintendo competitions, contests, locations and events Nintendo’s own events Nintendo of America Community Guidelines, marked June 2025
Online-play suspension Nintendo Online play in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Not stated in sources for offline or independent events Nintendo Support, temporary online-play suspension page; date not stated
Character or ruleset restriction A league or event ruleset One character (Steve) in that competition Only that competition’s ruleset Illinois High School Association, 2025–26 Esports game summaries

Organizer bans

Tournament organizers set their own eligibility rules and can refuse or remove entries under them. Nintendo’s official rules for the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate North American Online Open, run with Battlefy in October 2020, show a typical structure: players who violate the rules, or engage in conduct the sponsor considers detrimental or unfair, can be disqualified, and the sponsor has discretion over eligibility for that event.

Those rules governed one 2020 event. They are not binding on every grassroots bracket.

Nintendo’s own restrictions

Community Guidelines and Nintendo events

Nintendo of America’s Community Guidelines, marked June 2025, state that additional standards may apply at Nintendo events and tournaments. The relevant passage reads:

“Anyone who violates any of our user agreements or these Community Guidelines may be suspended or have access to games and/or services disabled, their user entries, content, or posts removed, and their entry to competitions, contests, locations (including Nintendo stores), and events restricted.”

The restriction therefore reaches Nintendo’s own competitions, contests and events.

Community tournament terms

Nintendo Support’s terms for participating in and viewing community tournaments that use Nintendo games ask participants to follow Nintendo Account terms, the Community Guidelines and the rules of the event. The participant rule reads:

“Participants must abide by the rules of the event and games and avoid using inappropriate player names or team names.”

Participants at a community event that uses Nintendo games therefore face both sets of rules at once.

Online-play suspensions

Nintendo’s support page on temporary suspension from online play in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate treats this as a restriction on the online service. The page does not establish that a temporary online suspension automatically bars a player from offline tournaments or from events run by independent organizers.

Character and ruleset restrictions

A competition can ban a character, stage, item or technique without banning a person. The Illinois High School Association’s 2025–26 Esports game summaries state that Steve is banned from its Super Smash Bros. Ultimate competition because of an exploit-related bug or technique. That is a rule about one scholastic competition’s ruleset. It does not indicate that Steve is restricted anywhere else, and it says nothing about any player.

Historical named cases

2GGaming and the July 2020 announcements

Nintendo World Report’s July 2, 2020 article, “Competitive Smash Community Rocked By Confessions And Allegations Of Sexual Abuse,” reported that Southern California organizer 2GGaming announced immediate, permanent bans for four people following allegations, and made other event-ban decisions. These are organizer decisions as reported in 2020. They are not proof of the underlying allegations, and the article does not establish a current ban status for anyone.

Read the article directly if you need the names, dates or wording of each decision. Attribute each allegation to its source rather than treating it as established.

Nairo’s organizer bans

SmashWiki, a community-maintained reference, reports that 2GGaming and Collision lifted Nairo’s organizer bans after he appealed. That shows why a historical ban needs a date and a named organization attached: a lifted ban at one organizer does not show that every other organizer changed its position. The entry is a community reference rather than an organizer statement, so treat it as a report and confirm current status with the organizers.

Can a banned player enter another tournament?

It depends on which restriction applies. An organizer’s ban covers that organizer’s events under its own policy. A Nintendo event restriction covers Nintendo’s competitions, contests and events under the Community Guidelines. An online-play suspension concerns the online service, and the sources cited here do not show that it removes a player from offline or independent events. The sources also do not establish that one organizer’s ban carries over to a different organizer, so ask the organizer of the event you want to enter.

How to check a named restriction

  1. Identify the type: organizer ban, Nintendo event restriction, online-play suspension, or character or ruleset rule. Use the table above to match it.
  2. For an organizer ban, open the event’s current rules and the organizer’s most recent announcement about the person. Only the organizer can confirm the scope and whether the restriction is still in force.
  3. For a Nintendo event or competition restriction, read the Community Guidelines (marked June 2025) and Nintendo Support’s terms for community tournaments.
  4. For an online-play suspension, check Nintendo Support’s page on temporary suspension from online play in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and confirm whether the restriction is still active.
  5. Note the date of each decision and whether it was appealed, changed or expired.

What the sources do not establish

  • A complete or current list of banned players. No public registry covering all tournaments exists in the sources cited here, and the named cases are historical reports.
  • Any total, percentage or count of banned players. None of the sources supports a figure.
  • Current status for the 2020 organizer decisions. The most recent dated sources are from 2025, and the 2020 event rules and 2020 reporting are older.
