He is also identified as the original Donkey Kong from the arcade games. Because the series uses both family relationships, there is no single uncontested answer about the modern Donkey Kong’s father.
Is Cranky Kong Donkey Kong’s father or grandfather?
It depends on which game or publication you follow. The Donkey Kong Country instruction manual describes Cranky as the modern Donkey Kong’s grandfather, but also calls him DK’s “pappy”—an informal word that can mean father and does not resolve the contradiction on its own.
Donkey Kong 64-era material calls Cranky Donkey Kong’s father, while Donkey Kong Country and Donkey Kong Country 2 material describe him as the grandfather. A chronology of these conflicting descriptions is collected by The Mushroom Kingdom. Taken together, the sources point to an inconsistency in the franchise’s family history, not a definitive answer that makes every version agree.
Why is Cranky Kong also the original Donkey Kong?
The Donkey Kong Country manual identifies Cranky as the original Donkey Kong who starred in the arcade games of the 1980s. It distinguishes that older character from the Donkey Kong who stars in Donkey Kong Country, while describing the latter as Cranky’s grandson elsewhere in the manual. Nintendo’s 2000 Japanese magazine likewise describes the modern Donkey Kong as the original Donkey Kong’s grandchild, according to the chronology compiled by The Mushroom Kingdom.

This distinction helps explain the names, but it does not settle the modern character’s parentage: calling Cranky the original arcade Donkey Kong is not the same as establishing whether he is the modern DK’s father or grandfather. Nintendo Wire also summarizes Cranky as the original arcade Donkey Kong and notes that he is described as the modern DK’s grandfather “or sometimes father” (Nintendo Wire’s Cranky Kong feature).

If “Donkey Kong” means the modern Donkey Kong Country protagonist, Cranky Kong is the character most often associated with his older generation—but the sources do not consistently say whether that makes Cranky his father or grandfather. The modern Donkey Kong’s father is not named consistently enough in the sources reviewed to give a more certain answer.

Nintendo’s developer interview about Donkey Kong’s different guises across games does not address his parentage, so it cannot resolve the family-tree question (Ask the Developer Vol. 19: Donkey Kong Bananza — Part 1).
