Spoiler warning: This explainer reveals key setup details, including Sephiroth’s presumed death in Nibelheim and his later return.
Sephiroth is a legendary former SOLDIER: 1st Class who was once hailed as a hero. After disappearing during a mission in Nibelheim, he reappears as Cloud Strife’s nemesis, steals a Shinra research specimen called Jenova, and becomes a threat to the planet. Square Enix’s official character summaries establish those essentials; they do not, on their own, provide a complete account of his origins or everything that happened in Nibelheim.

Who is Sephiroth?
Sephiroth is one of the most renowned figures in the world of Final Fantasy VII: a former member of SOLDIER: 1st Class, Shinra’s elite fighting force, and a warrior remembered as exceptionally powerful. Before the events that bring him into conflict with Cloud, he was regarded as a hero. His reputation is part of what makes his return alarming: the threat is not an unknown opponent, but a celebrated figure whose disappearance had become part of his story.

Square Enix’s official character profile identifies his rank and former reputation, but the profile does not explain all the circumstances behind his power or settle every question about his identity.

The word “former” matters. Sephiroth’s story is not simply that of a current Shinra soldier following orders. The official descriptions place him first in the role of a renowned member of SOLDIER, then describe his disappearance and reappearance as a danger to the planet. His old status explains why he is remembered as a hero; it does not mean that his present aims align with Shinra or with the people who once admired him.
For a newcomer, the most useful starting point is the contrast between reputation and present threat. Sephiroth was known as a powerful, celebrated warrior. Then he vanished during a mission, was believed dead, and later returned in a way that made him the focus of Cloud Strife’s pursuit. Those facts answer who he is at the level needed to follow the central conflict, without claiming to explain every piece of his lore.
What happened to Sephiroth in Nibelheim?
In the story’s chronology, Sephiroth was believed to have died in the line of duty at Nibelheim. Square Enix’s series overview says he vanished without a trace five years before the events it summarizes; the FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH character profile describes him as presumed dead after the Nibelheim mission. These are narrative time references, not dates in the real world.
The essential turn is that the presumed death was not the end of his story. The official profile says he later appears at the Shinra Building and takes the Jenova specimen held there. That return overturns what characters believed and sets the present-day pursuit in motion.
The official summaries establish this outline, but not a complete, scene-by-scene account of the Nibelheim incident or the full cause of Sephiroth’s change. It is safest to treat “what happened at Nibelheim” as a major mystery behind his return rather than infer a detailed explanation from the brief character profile alone.
A simple chronology helps keep the setup clear:
- Before the current pursuit: Sephiroth is a legendary SOLDIER: 1st Class and is hailed as a hero.
- At Nibelheim: He disappears during a mission. The Rebirth profile describes him as believed to have died in the line of duty.
- Five years before the events in the series overview: Sephiroth has vanished without a trace, according to Square Enix’s series page.
- Afterward: He reappears at the Shinra Building and takes the Jenova specimen.
- In the journey framed by Rebirth: Cloud and the group leave Midgar to pursue Sephiroth and the truth.
This order is enough to understand why his return is a revelation: characters had reason to regard him as gone, but the figure they thought lost is active again and has taken something from Shinra. The official summaries do not tell the whole Nibelheim story, so this timeline should not be mistaken for a complete explanation of what happened there or why.
Why is Sephiroth Cloud’s enemy?
Square Enix calls Sephiroth Cloud Strife’s nemesis. The conflict is personal because Cloud is the character pursuing him, but it also reaches beyond the two men: Sephiroth’s return raises the danger facing the planet. The official series overview places that threat within a wider crisis involving Shinra, the corporation that monopolizes mako, an energy source drawn from the planet’s life force.

Cloud’s group begins in a struggle against Shinra. As the story develops, the discovery that Sephiroth has returned makes the stakes larger than the group’s initial confrontation with the corporation. In this sense, the rivalry has two linked scales: Cloud is chasing a particular adversary, while the party’s pursuit is also tied to the planet’s safety.
The broader setup matters because it explains why Sephiroth’s role is not just “the villain Cloud wants to defeat.” The series overview describes a world where Shinra’s monopoly on mako is already central to the danger, and then says the discovery of Sephiroth’s return puts the planet in greater danger than expected. The personal pursuit and the planet-wide stakes sit alongside each other: Cloud’s enemy is also connected to a crisis larger than one individual conflict.
Cloud and Sephiroth should be compared by narrative role, not by an unsupported power ranking. Sephiroth is described as Cloud’s nemesis; Cloud is the character who pursues him with the group. The sources do not provide a numerical comparison of their strength, a definitive ranking against other characters, or enough detail to reduce their relationship to a contest of abilities.
That distinction also prevents a common misunderstanding: the official descriptions establish that Sephiroth is exceptionally powerful and a major threat, but they do not publish a chart or define the limits of that power. His importance in the story can be understood without settling who would win a hypothetical fight. The grounded comparison is that one character is the nemesis and the other is among those chasing him and the truth.

The REBIRTH character profile says Sephiroth seeks to change destiny and rule the planet. It also says he steals Jenova, a specimen kept by Shinra researchers. These details identify his stated objective and a consequential act, but they do not amount to a complete explanation of his motives or the precise relationship between him and Jenova.
That distinction matters. The official summary supports saying that Jenova is a Shinra research specimen Sephiroth takes, and that his stated ambition concerns destiny and control of the planet. It does not, by itself, establish every causal link between Jenova, Sephiroth’s history, and the events at Nibelheim. A fuller lore explanation would require evidence beyond these concise official profiles.
There are two separate pieces of information here, and they should not be collapsed into one. First is the action: Sephiroth takes the specimen called Jenova from Shinra. Second is the objective the profile attributes to him: changing destiny and ruling the planet. The profile places both facts in his description, but it does not spell out an entire chain of events explaining exactly how the specimen serves that goal.

“What is Sephiroth trying to do?” therefore has a clear short answer and a more limited long answer. The short answer, according to Square Enix’s Rebirth character page, is that he seeks to change destiny and rule the planet. The longer answer—why he wants that, how it relates to his disappearance, and what Jenova’s precise role is—cannot be filled in from the concise official profile alone. Treating that boundary honestly is more useful than presenting an unsourced interpretation as settled fact.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →How does FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH frame the pursuit?
Square Enix’s official REBIRTH character page describes Cloud and the group leaving Midgar in pursuit of Sephiroth and the truth. That wording makes the chase more than a straightforward hunt for an enemy: the party is also seeking answers. It is the game’s framing of the journey, not a promise that every mystery is resolved in that installment.
The reference to both Sephiroth and “the truth” gives the pursuit two parts. There is an identifiable target—Cloud’s nemesis—and there are unanswered questions that motivate the journey. This echoes the story’s setup: Sephiroth was believed dead, has returned, and has taken a Shinra specimen, while the full explanation of the Nibelheim incident and his history remains outside what the short profile reveals.
The Midgar detail is useful as a story marker, not as a claim that the official character page provides a complete itinerary or a full synopsis. Square Enix’s wording says the group leaves Midgar in pursuit. It frames the scale of the journey as expanding beyond the city and links the hunt for Sephiroth to the search for answers.
The official profile also gives Sephiroth this line: “Don’t be afraid. It’s not death─it’s a homecoming.” It is presented as his dialogue on the FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH character page. The line conveys the unsettling tone associated with him, but it should not be treated as a complete statement of what he means or proof of a particular lore interpretation.

As an introduction, the quote signals why Sephiroth can feel ominous even before a reader knows all the details: it is a striking line about death and homecoming, attributed to a character whose return is already central to the danger. Its wording does not, by itself, explain the meaning of “homecoming,” the nature of his plans, or the relationship between Sephiroth and Jenova.
What is Sephiroth’s place in the wider story?
The official series overview sets FINAL FANTASY VII against Shinra’s monopoly over mako, which it describes as energy drawn from the planet’s life force. Cloud joins AVALANCHE, and the group discovers Sephiroth’s return. Square Enix says that the planet is in greater danger than expected. That framing places Sephiroth inside a conflict with both a corporate backdrop and a planetary scale.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
For orientation, there are three connected elements in this setup: Shinra controls a resource tied to the planet, Cloud joins AVALANCHE, and the party learns that Sephiroth has returned. These details explain why the official overview does not present his return as an isolated personal matter. The danger attached to him enlarges an already serious crisis.
The overview is a concise story introduction rather than a detailed account of every faction or event. It supports saying that AVALANCHE and Cloud are part of the initial conflict with Shinra, and that Sephiroth’s return raises the stakes. It does not justify inventing additional motives for AVALANCHE or treating every relationship in the game as resolved by that summary.
What the official character summaries do—and do not—establish
Taken together, Square Enix’s official series and character pages give a reliable high-level answer: Sephiroth was a celebrated SOLDIER: 1st Class, was believed dead after disappearing at Nibelheim, returns by taking Jenova from Shinra, and becomes the focus of Cloud’s pursuit. They also identify his stated aim in REBIRTH as changing destiny and ruling the planet.
Those summaries are character introductions, not exhaustive lore guides. They do not fully explain Sephiroth’s origin, the complete sequence and causes of the Nibelheim incident, or precisely how Jenova relates to his identity and actions. Keeping that boundary clear avoids confusing established story setup with interpretations that the cited official descriptions do not settle.
A careful explanation can still be informative without pretending those gaps are answered. It can say what is established: his former rank and reputation, his presumed death and later reappearance, the specimen he takes, his stated ambition, and his role as Cloud’s nemesis. It can also identify what remains unresolved in the short official descriptions: the complete origin story, the detailed causes of the Nibelheim events, and the exact relationship between Sephiroth and Jenova.
That separation is especially helpful for readers approaching the story through different installments. Square Enix’s series overview supplies a broad setup, while the Rebirth character page emphasizes the pursuit from Midgar and gives a compact profile of Sephiroth’s aim. Neither page should be made to answer more than it actually says. Together, however, they offer a clear entry point into why he matters: he is a celebrated warrior presumed lost, now a returning adversary whose actions threaten more than Cloud alone.
