Yaroslav Askarov is a Russian goaltender drafted 11th overall by the Nashville Predators in 2020 and acquired by the San Jose Sharks in August 2024. He was born in Omsk on June 16, 2002. His NHL workload grew substantially in 2025-26, but the available figures are best read as season snapshots—not as proof that he had secured a permanent starter’s role.
Who is Yaroslav Askarov?
Askarov is a goaltender from Omsk, Russia, born June 16, 2002, according to the San Jose Sharks player bio. Nashville selected him 11th overall in the first round of the 2020 NHL Draft.
San Jose acquired Askarov from Nashville on August 23, 2024. The trade also brought the Sharks forward Nolan Burke and a 2025 third-round selection; Nashville received forward prospect David Edstrom, goaltender Magnus Chrona and a 2025 first-round selection. The Sharks’ announcement also said the team signed Askarov to a two-year extension beginning in 2025-26, with announced terms of $4 million total and a $2 million average annual value. Those are the terms announced in 2024, not confirmation of his contract status after that term.

| Competition and season | Games or record | Goals-against average | Save percentage | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| NHL regular season, 2024-25 | 13 games; 4-6-2 | 3.10 | .896 | San Jose Sharks, 2025-26 season preview |
| AHL Calder Cup playoffs, 2024-25, San Jose Barracuda | 3-2 | 1.68 | .935 | San Jose Sharks, 2025-26 season preview |
| NHL regular season, 2025-26 | 47 games; 21-20-4 | 3.63 | .884 | InGoal Magazine, 2026 profile |
The 2025-26 line is reported by InGoal Magazine, a secondary source; it has not been independently confirmed here against a primary NHL statistics record. The figures show a much larger NHL workload than in 2024-25, but goals-against average and save percentage alone cannot establish a goalie’s overall quality or explain the influence of team defense, opponents and role.
How does Askarov play?
San Jose general manager Mike Grier described Askarov as a goalie with tools to become an everyday NHL goaltender, citing his positioning, vision and athletic ability. Grier also praised his size, puck handling and ability to read the game in NHL.com coverage. These are the acquiring club’s evaluations of his strengths, not evidence that he is already an established NHL number-one goalie.

What his NHL career numbers show
Askarov moved from a limited NHL appearance total in 2024-25 to a substantially larger reported workload in 2025-26. His AHL playoff performance in 2024-25 is a separate part of his development record, not an NHL statistic. Taken together, the available numbers document opportunity and results across different settings; they do not, by themselves, settle what his long-term NHL role will be.
