MLB’s 2026 ABS Challenge System is not full robotic umpiring: a human home-plate umpire makes the initial call on every pitch, and a player can ask the tracking system to review an eligible ball-or-strike decision. Full ABS would let the system decide every pitch. MLB adopted the challenge format for Spring Training, the championship season and the postseason starting in 2026.
How does MLB’s ABS Challenge System work?
The umpire calls each pitch first. If the batter, pitcher or catcher promptly challenges an eligible call, the Automated Ball-Strike system checks the pitch location and confirms or overturns the decision. The challenge system is therefore a limited appeal mechanism, not an automated first-call system.
Challenge limits and timing
- Each team starts with two challenges. A successful challenge is retained; a confirmed call uses one.
- A team with no challenge remaining at the start of an extra inning receives one for that inning.
- Only the batter, pitcher or catcher may initiate a challenge. MLB says the request must be immediate—generally within about two seconds—and is signaled by tapping a cap or helmet. Managers and other dugout personnel cannot direct it.
- MLB’s 2026 explainer says challenges are unavailable when a position player is pitching and after a replay review.
How the tracking result reaches the field
MLB says 12 Hawk-Eye cameras around the field track pitch locations. The result is transmitted using T-Mobile for Business’ private 5G network and shown on the ballpark videoboard and broadcast. MLB described the process as taking approximately 15 seconds in its 2025 announcement; its explainer later reported an average of 13.8 seconds per challenge during 2025 Spring Training. Those figures refer to different descriptions and periods.
What is the difference between ABS and “robot umps”?
“Robot umps” often refers to full ABS: the system determines every ball and strike, with no human umpire making the initial call. MLB tested full ABS in the minors, but did not adopt it for MLB games in 2026. Under the adopted challenge format, only a player-challenged call receives machine review; the umpire’s unchallenged calls stand.

| Comparison | ABS Challenge System | Full ABS |
|---|---|---|
| First decision | Human home-plate umpire | Automated system |
| Machine adjudication | Only eligible calls challenged by a player | Every ball-or-strike pitch |
| Human role | Umpire makes every initial call; unchallenged calls remain | Umpire does not decide balls and strikes |
| Catchers’ pitch framing | Can still influence unchallenged calls | Does not influence the automated ball-strike decision |
| Strategic choice | Players must judge whether and when to spend limited challenges | No player challenge decision is required |
| Coverage trade-off | Corrects some disputed calls; unchallenged calls remain human decisions | Applies the tracked zone to every pitch, using a defined zone |
What strike zone does ABS enforce?
MLB’s ABS zone is a two-dimensional rectangle 17 inches wide, matching home plate. Its top is set at 53.5% of the hitter’s measured height and its bottom at 27%. The system evaluates the pitch at the middle of the plate.
This is a formal measurement rule, not a camera recreating each umpire’s personal interpretation. MLB says the human-called zone has generally been more rounded and more lenient to pitchers, with a higher top and lower bottom than the ABS rectangle. The league also says it tested three-dimensional and front-of-plate versions, but found that edge-clipping breaking balls and slow curves touching the front before landing in the dirt could produce outcomes it considered inconsistent with how the game is understood. A 2026 academic analysis discusses the broader problem: the practical “ground truth” of the strike zone has been shaped by both the written rule and umpire enforcement.

Why did MLB choose challenges instead of full automation?
MLB says minor-league testing found preference for the challenge approach among fans, players, managers and other personnel. The league also cited retaining a human role and preserving pitch framing, a catcher skill that would no longer affect ball-strike calls under full ABS. MLB further said walks were more prevalent in minor-league games using full ABS and could slow games. Those are MLB’s stated reasons and testing observations, not proof that full automation always produces more walks or longer games.
In its 2025 approval announcement, Competition Committee chair and Seattle Mariners chairman John Stanton described the change as “another big step forward for the game.” The choice reflects a trade-off: full ABS gives machine adjudication on every pitch, while challenges limit interruptions and leave unappealed decisions to the umpire.

What has the challenge system produced so far?
Associated Press reported that MLB’s first ABS season in 2026 had 10,557 challenges, an average of 4.35 per game. Of those, 5,686 calls were overturned, or about 54%. AP reported success rates of 59% for catchers, 49% for batters and 40% for pitchers. These role-specific percentages are not proof that one role is inherently better at challenging: opportunities, exposure and challenge selection differ.
Those full-season figures should not be combined with MLB’s separate 2025 Spring Training test. MLB reported 4.1 challenges per game across 288 Spring Training games, an average 13.8 seconds per challenge and a 52.2% overturn rate. The preseason test and the first MLB season are distinct sets of results.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone described the strategic adjustment this way: “You have instincts over what to do in certain situations.” The limited challenge supply makes each request a choice about whether a call is important enough to contest and whether the player can signal in time.
