Who Is Yasuke? Assassin’s Creed Shadows’ Black Samurai Explained

Yasuke was a real African man who served Oda Nobunaga in late sixteenth-century Japan. The record is thin, historians debate whether he was a samurai, and Assassin's Creed Shadows presents him as historical fiction.

Yasuke was a real African man who served the Japanese warlord Oda Nobunaga in late sixteenth-century Japan. The surviving record of his life is thin, and historians disagree over whether it supports calling him a samurai. Assassin’s Creed Shadows makes him a samurai protagonist, but Ubisoft describes the game as historical fiction rather than a factual account of history or of real people. Those three points are separate, and the article below keeps them apart.

What the historical record establishes

The documentary evidence for Yasuke is limited. Thomas Lockley, in his article “The Story of Yasuke: Nobunaga’s African Retainer,” writes that European and Japanese writings provide testimony about Yasuke’s life in Japan from 1579 until 1582. Lockley also notes that reconstructing what happened before and after that window involves speculation. Any claim about his birthplace, early life, exact duties, or fate after 1582 goes beyond what the surviving testimony shows.

The period the sources cover

The testimony places Yasuke in Nobunaga’s service during the final years of the Oda lord’s campaigns. Because the record is a set of scattered references rather than a continuous biography, a single detail can carry a lot of weight in later debate. That is why the sections below treat each claim separately.

Ubisoft’s account of his origins

Ubisoft’s developer article says Yasuke was of African origin, arrived in Japan enslaved by the Portuguese, impressed Nobunaga with his size, strength and wits, and then served under him. This is the studio’s account of its historical inspiration. It is not a substitute for primary documentation, and the arrival and character details should be read as the game’s starting point rather than as established history.

Was Yasuke a samurai?

This is the question most readers ask, and it is the one the evidence leaves open. Scholars do not agree on whether Yasuke’s position in Nobunaga’s household amounted to samurai status.

Claim What supports it Limits identified by historians
Yasuke served Nobunaga European and Japanese writings from 1579 to 1582 (Lockley) The testimony covers a limited period; earlier and later events are reconstructed
Nobunaga gave Yasuke a sword and a residence One version of the Shinchō Kōki (Chronicle of Lord Nobunaga), as cited by historian Yuichi Goza The detail appears only in that version among multiple manuscripts and may have been added in later transcription
Yasuke was a samurai Gift of a sword and residence, which Goza discusses as a possible sign of recognized status Goza says even a recognized status could have had a symbolic meaning; scholars remain divided

The sword-and-residence evidence

Historian Yuichi Goza, assistant professor at the International Research Center for Japanese Studies, points to the passage in which Nobunaga gives Yasuke a sword and a residence. He cautions that this appears in only one version of the Shinchō Kōki, out of several surviving manuscripts, and that it may have been added when the text was copied. Even if the gift is accepted as genuine, Goza argues that its meaning could be symbolic rather than a formal change in rank. In a Japan Forward interview, he put the practical problem plainly: “Since there are few historical records about Yasuke, it’s difficult to say anything conclusive about some aspects of his life.”

The scholarly debate

Hirohito Tsuji’s 2025 conference paper, presented at the International Medieval Congress, reaches a similar conclusion from a different angle. According to the University of East Anglia record of the paper, Tsuji describes few primary historical accounts and differing opinions on whether Yasuke was a samurai. The paper also warns that audiences should recognize the fictional nature of historical games when learning about the past. It is one scholarly contribution to an active discussion, not a settled verdict.

How Assassin’s Creed Shadows uses him

The game’s version of Yasuke is built from the gaps in that record. Ubisoft says it chose him because it wanted a samurai protagonist, and because the open-ended historical record left room for creative storytelling. The studio’s developer article explains those choices as design decisions, not as new historical findings.

Ubisoft’s own framing

Ubisoft’s community statement is the clearest primary source on how the company wants the game read. It says: “Our intention has never been to present any of our Assassin’s Creed games, including Assassin’s Creed Shadows, as factual representations of history, or historical characters.” It calls Shadows “a compelling, historical fiction set in Feudal Japan,” and it adds: “While Yasuke is depicted as a samurai in Assassin’s Creed Shadows, we acknowledge that this is a matter of debate and discussion.” Quote this wording exactly if you cite the studio.

How Yasuke plays compared with Naoe

The two protagonists are built around different approaches. Their roles describe game design, not the historical Yasuke.

Reading the game and the history together

The most accurate way to use the game and the history side by side is to assign each to its own job:

  • For the historical Yasuke, rely on the 1579–1582 testimony and on scholarship about it. Be cautious about birthplace, early life, exact duties, and fate.
  • For the samurai question, treat the sword-and-residence passage as contested, since it depends on one manuscript version, and note that historians disagree about its meaning.
  • For the game, treat Yasuke’s backstory, combat style, and story beats as Ubisoft’s creative choices, which the studio itself labels historical fiction.

Read this way, the game is a fictional frame built around a real man. It can be a useful way into the period, but it cannot be used to settle what the historical record leaves open.
