Hytale was made by Hypixel Studios, a studio founded by Simon Collins-Laflamme and Philippe Touchette out of the Hypixel modding and minigame-server community. Riot Games acquired the studio in 2020, but the original founders reacquired Hytale in November 2025. After development stopped and the studio began winding down in June 2025, Hytale returned and entered early access on January 13, 2026.
Who created Hytale?
Hypixel Studios created Hytale as its first game. The studio grew from the Hypixel community, known for its modding work and minigame server. Its founders, Simon Collins-Laflamme and Philippe Touchette, set out to turn that community experience into a standalone game. Hypixel Studios says it was founded in 2018 to develop Hytale.
Riot Games’ 2020 announcement named Collins-Laflamme as a co-founder and Aaron “Noxy” Donaghey as the studio’s newly appointed CEO at the time. That historical leadership detail does not describe the studio’s current ownership or management.
How did Riot Games become involved?
Riot completed its acquisition of Hypixel Studios on April 16, 2020. Riot said the studio would retain its structure and operational independence at that time. The acquisition followed substantial interest in the game: Riot reported more than 2.5 million Hytale beta sign-ups in its 2020 announcement. That is a historical sign-up figure, not a current player count.

Collins-Laflamme described the acquisition as a way to help the studio grow beyond its mod-team roots and realize its vision for Hytale. Riot’s ownership lasted until the founders bought the game back in 2025; Riot is not Hytale’s current owner.
What happened when Hytale development stopped?
Hypixel Studios says development ended and the studio began winding down on June 23, 2025. On November 17, 2025, Collins-Laflamme announced that he and the original founders had acquired Hytale from Riot. The studio described itself as fully independent and said the founders were personally committed to funding development for ten years.

The team also said it had rehired more than 30 developers by the November reacquisition announcement. In a November 28 update, it said the team had reached 50 after rehiring more than 40 former and new team members. These figures are dated snapshots, not current headcount claims.
Why did the revived project change direction?
In its November 2025 announcements, the studio said it was abandoning the newer cross-platform engine and returning to the older build it called the “Legacy Engine,” the version associated with Hytale’s original trailer. The founders described that build as playable and said the newer engine lagged behind in gameplay. These are the developer’s explanations of its own technical decisions, not an independent assessment of the project’s development history.

The studio’s November 28 update also described merging more than 300 GitHub branches into a single working branch as part of getting development back on track. The engine switch and branch merge help explain what the team said it was doing after reacquisition; they do not establish an independent cause for the project’s long development timeline.

Hytale entered early access on January 13, 2026. At launch, the Hytale Team described it as “unpolished and incomplete.” The launch included Exploration Mode, Creative Mode, modding support, and multiplayer, while Adventure Mode and official minigames were not yet included. Early access is therefore a playable, evolving release rather than the finished version originally envisioned.

Development continued after launch: official Update 7 pre-release notes were published on September 3 and updated through October 1, 2026, and a July Chapter 1 preview said new content was actively in development. Those dated updates show ongoing work; they do not mean that every planned feature is available in the current build.
